Waited on line at AT&T store at 43rd and Lexington (NYC). I was 7th in line. Got into the store and was told that they had only received shipments of 8gb, NO 16GB!!!

I can't believe it. Not only that, but the line was about 200-300 people long, and they only had 50 phones. They weren't even telling people on line.

SO PISSED!

Unfortunately, this just adds to the cockup from Apple the last 24 hours. It's almost laughable the way they have handled all of this.

I hope I never see a Mac v. PC commercial again.

I must have really lucked out

First - let me say that I feel terrible for everyone experiencing this.

I did have a different experience, though. I was non-eligible, but the sold it to me and even gave me the eligable price!

The details:
I was 3rd in line at the AT&T store in Cambridge, MA (at the mall). When they came through the line before opening, they asked each of us whether we were a) new or existing customers and b) if existing, whether we were eligible or not. I'm an existing customer who was not eligible (per my online status and calls to check).

I went in and when ringing up, the clerk told me that I was indeed showing up as eligible for the upgrade and charged me the $299 price for the 16GB phone. (They only had black available incidentally).

I checked out as quickly as I could. I feel really lucky. The only reason why I can think they'd see me as eligible is that I bought an original iPhone in April, though I later returned it and it wasn't showing up on my account.

Good luck everyone!

Man, that makes me want to go to that AT&T store. I'm in the same boat-current AT&T custoemr not eligible. I'm in Boston and there are 3 AT&T stores within walking distance but Cambridgeside is a quick ride on the T...

I'd hesitate against thinking that there's something special going on in this store. I think my account info was somehow screwed up in my favor. But go for it if you like...

What really sucks is the communication around this launch. Apple has been better than AT&T, but it has still been far below their standard. AT&T is haphazard (as expected), but for all of the direct questions people have made and planning for the launch day, they do something like this with no warning, inconsistent execution and no communication. It's terrible. The only reason I queued at the AT&T store in the mall rather than the Apple store (I was early enough that the line didn't matter) was that AT&T was supposedly better equipped to handle the non-standard activations. This was communicated by Apple in their emails and posts and by AT&T's store employees...

You guys should make a fuss!

I had a similar experience. I was not upgrade eligible according to the AT&T website, but was able to buy the 16GB black iPhone for $299. The guy next to me knew that I wasn't upgrade eligible because we were talking before we were allowed in. He just gave me this raised eyebrow look and I gave him the shush finger and got out of there as soon as I could with my activated iPhone.

Hope this works out for the rest of you. I know I got mine and I'm really excited!

Was this an ATT Store? Did they even check your account?

Had you bought the first iPhone and returned it as well? Did you ask for the subsidized price, or just get lucky?

I want to know whether to bring it up or keep my mouth shut :)

I had not bought the first iPhone. In fact, I was only about 15 months into my current contract. The woman at the registered asked if I was a current AT&T customer. I said I was but that I knew I was ineligible for upgrade but was wiling to pay the extra $200. She said okay and continued with the activation process. When the total came up I was only charged $299. I just kept my mouth shut at that point.

By the way, it's looking pretty grim for those of us with 'note upgrades. The one thing I was able to do is contact a store manager and get on his 'list' of updgrades to approve for the iPhone. He said he'd get back to me by monday.
