My HomePods and HomePod Minis won’t turn on or off any lights either since the update. “Sorry, I couldn’t find anything like that in your home”.

That’s just such poor QA. Did they even test this release?

Turn on sound check/sound control (don’t know what it is in English). After turning that option on, my HomePod could find the update file and succesfully updated.

Mine updated themselves over night (6 originals and 1 mini); they all work fine now including controlling HomeKit lights. Sometimes these changes need a little time to shake through, in my experience.

It’s also beneficial to make sure everything has updated, for example AppleTV devices which may be acting as your home hub for HomeKit.

One more example of how maddening the newly updated Siri is. I have to be very specific in my phrasing of requests now on any device that was updated yesterday.

I agree. I used to be able to ask Siri on my phone or iPad to “show living room camera” and it would open up the home app and then go straight to the desired camera. Now since 14.5, it’s only loads up the home app. I don’t know if there is a way to get it to show the camera directly… But it’s further evidence in my opinion the Apple are becoming ever more incompetent.

14.5 broke my stereo pair (OGs). The pair showed in homekit and airplay menus, but when played acted like they were unpaired. Both would react to "hey siri" but only one would play. When using airplay to the pair, the opposite one would play.

Tried a restart, then a reset (remove and re-add). Did not help. Reset router (clutching at straws) and unplugged the homepods and plugged them back in. Re-paired and now they work.

Anyone else have this issue?

So over on the HomePod reddit, there's a top thread about how 14.5 seems to have improved the sound quality of stereo pair on the OG HomePods? I've tried asking what specifically sounds better, but the most I've gathered from those who say it's improved, is that the bass is stronger and it just sounds more dynamic.

Just wondering if anybody else felt the same way or noticed similar? What do you think? Thanks.

Cannot really hear a difference if I am trying to be objective. The issue with these things is that if you start focussing on one aspect of the sound it will stand out. So if I read something saying bass is stronger, and then listen, i will put my attention to the bass (which is admittedly very good) and perceive it as stronger than yesterday when I wasnt paying attention.

Every few updates, my HomePod seem to recalibrate using that spatial awareness feature. Was more bassy for a few months, and now it’s more tempered.

Now I have been listening, the bass is definitely more pronounced. I tend to like a bassier mix, but this is almost too much. I am not sure if it is just because of the reset process like the poster above suggested, or if its a change to the sound profile.

My Homepods are all updated, but the Home-App still shows „Update Loading“ - since 2 days…
Anybody knows what I can do? (Already restarted all homepods)

I just quit the Home app and opened it again to fix this issue. But if the OS update is actually done on your HomePods you can just ignore it.

Regarding Apple Music on the HomePod: I've noticed a much improved shuffle algorithm. Not sure if this is a HomePod fix or a general Apple Music fix but either way I'm very happy to see it!

I was able to update each of my HomePods to 14.5 by restarting them via the Home app. After doing so, the update popped up and was installable. Without restarting all of them, however, I was getting the same "could not complete operation" pop-up error.

After installing the updates, the volume lights on my two OG HomePod pairs (+ / -) stay on continuously. Restarting and playing/pausing music or a TV show doesn't extinguish them. Anyone else seeing this? Is it the new expected behavior?
Having exact the same problem on my stereo pair (OG) connected to my 4K Apple TV and set to default audio output.

Volume lights on the HomePods stay always on. My HomePod mini and other OG HomePod (single, no stereo pair and not set as default output in my Apple TV) work normal.

Sorry to hear; it makes me feel better that it's not just me. :)

Turning off this feature got them to fall asleep, but now I'm forgetting to set the HomePods as the audio output when watching TV and working out.

I'm planning on troubleshooting further – e.g., restarting the HomePods with the Default Audio Output setting off, un/repairing the stereo pair, and - if all else fails - resetting the HomePods – but I just can't be bothered now.

It's something that started with "audioOS" 14.5, so it's very likely a software bug that Apple will only fix with a future software update.

Let me know if you find a solution and I'll report back myself.

Same thing for me , right after the update no more stereo option is working for me even if they are paired together in the home app…. Sad

I have tried to make the update happen multiple times - switching off at mains, using software reset, accessing from home app on both Mac and iPhone - it was seeing the update but never completed the download - just became stuck. Now despite what I do the version shows at 14.4 and the Home app says all software up to date. Going via the AirPod page doesn’t work. Switching sound check on and off doesn’t work, I’m stuck. Can only assume the update has been pulled?

It's a super buggy update (with no new features) – I'd consider yourself lucky.

Just to update on this. I had 3 homes set up because different family members wanted HomePods kept separately for Apple Music/personal request reasons (Siri can't distinguish who's talking when we all used the same home). Even though they were part of different homes, as long as they were on the same wifi network we were able to use them to control lights, switches etc. of a home we shared where the lights were all held. iOS 14.5 broke this and removed the ability for the HomePods from different homes on the same wifi network to control the shared home. So to resolve this I had to remove my HomePods from my home and add them to the shared home where the lights are and now they can control the lights again.

I understand they probably did this for security reasons but a heads up in the release notes would've been nice. And if this wasn't intentional and it's a bug then I still stand by the poor QA comment.

Try removing from the home app and, if that doesn't work, resetting / unplugging. This worked for me, however then one of the pair lost its icloud login, and couldnt control my home. Took a while to get it all working, but seems to be OK now.

I have noticed that when I play the pair together with the non-paired homepod in another room, the non-paired one behaves strangely (volume slider jittering up and down).

14.5 has been a bad update so far for me.

Not having any bad luck with it myself. I've found another improvement in fact. I always use my OG HomePod as audio for my Apple TV and have noticed when something starts off quiet but then gets super loud, if I turn the volume down then up again it reaches a nice middleground. It never did that before, I had to manually adjust the audio in the Home app on my iPhone. Now it'll find a nice level of loudness on its own from the Apple TV remote.

There's just little tweaks like that I'm finding make the experience better in small ways.

Not had any issues so far except the Apple Music alarm I have set played louder than usual this morning... but that's literally the only "bug" I've noticed.

It is important to note that for most features in the apple ecosystem require FIND MY to be enabled on all devices. When find my is turned on, all devices either under your Apple ID or under your Apple family allows correct communication between your Apple devices to enable most features.

14.5 is a disaster. First, asking Siri to turn on or off lights now is sporadic at best depending how I phrase (I have two mini's and an original). More inconvenient, asking Siri to play anything out fo the Apple Music library (not my personal library), "cannot be found". Allegedly this is a know issue and being fixed within the next 48 hours, but I won't hold my breath. Makes me start pondering a Google Home...

p.s. looks like this was picked up (atleast the Apple Music piece) by a few other apple fan websites. Not sure if I missed it on Macrumors
