That's kinda unfortunate. I was hoping they'd manage to put a Touch ID sensor below the screen but I guess that might not be happening until later, or even at all. My main concern is whether the face recognition feature will work well, if it won't then it'll be disappointing.

But we'll see in september.

What if this is just a modified version of iOS 11 that is more custom tailored to the homepod?! If the device doesn't have need for touchID it would not have it in the code.
Apple has put too much into the touchID to just discard it.

Maybe this is their way of hiding it in plain sight.

My thoughts are Apple doesn't release shoddy software/hardware. When and if the facial recognition releases, it will be well tested and certainly up to par at Apple's expectations. It's just a matter of public adaptation and acceptance of this new technology that we have not yet experienced before with Apple. Time will tell all.

Sounds like there will be a software cutout at the bottom to mirror the top physical cut out - expect this to contain time and possibly other functions?
Time will remain in the center of the top. It will be directly below the cutout. The top corners will not house the status bar as it is now, but rather, new elements to it.

I've come to accept the loss of the headphone jack, even if I still don't like it or believe that it was necessary, but if there's no TouchID (even on the back), I will have to re-think purchasing this phone.
Will you believe it's necessary when you see the actual ifixit breakdown of this premium iPhone? I trust you will understand then. It will be looking you in the face.

Well, I guess it's looking more and more like no TouchID. I'm still excited for the reveal, just to see what will become of it. Still makes me wonder, if TouchID goes away this year, is there any incentive to bring it back, ala under the screen? Or is it gone forever? I'm interested to see how well an Apple-branded facial (has iris scanning been rumored?) recognition works. I think I'll pass on this year's model, but still excited to see what becomes of it.

I think I am gong to expect no touch ID on the new iPhone which will be a little bit hard to digest for me more so than the missing headphone jack. I kept telling myself they wouldn't remove the headphone jack even though deep down I knew they would. I think I will soon be expecting the same thing from this year as well.

If they do add touch ID under the display next year it's going to be so weird for them to say "Face ID" is going to be the best thing ever and you are going to love not having the finger print scanner! But then next year be like, we decided to bring back the finger print scanner... I can't wait to see how they market this.

There's a couple things I don't understand about this leak.

1. Why would they introduce tap to wake when we already have raise to wake?
Unless it will replace raise to wake?

2. If the home button is hidden sometimes then how do you exit an app?
Do you pinch to close like on an iPad? Or maybe you swipe from the bottom to reveal the "home area" with the home button, similar to swiping up to reveal the dock on iOS 11 on an iPad Pro?

iOS11 has been available since WWDC. I don't understand why any of those details were not discovered there. If they were not there, why would they add them right now?
Because Apple is well aware that iOS 11 goes to developers and they will scrutinize it. They would NEVER leave details in iOS 11. What they did was mistakenly leave details in a patch after iOS 11. A firmware for something not even released.

I mean the ID screen scan seemed too advanced to work this early maybe in a couple years. The rest I do believe though
It’s not as unbelievably advanced as people seem to think, the technologies there, it’s just accuracy that’s the problem. That could be sorted within a year, so sooner than you think. It’s a shame because Apple had the chance to be first in that area.

Tap to wake would be for those who do not use raise to wake (me), if Apple has chosen to wake the display like this given the apparent lack of any indentation in the glass for the home button.

I do not believe the home Button will ever not be available to use at any instant. I do not believe there will be a gesture to get the home button

I'm a little concerned because it really feels like Apple is rushing out a half baked phone to meet the 10th anniversary. The no bezel design looks cool, but based on what we think we know I wouldn't choose it over my iPhone 7.

That being said I have no horse in this race, I'm not upgrading this year anyway. I get the feeling this years iPhone 8 is going to turn out to be a very expensive beta test though.

Because Apple chooses a design that makes it necessary doesn't mean that it is absolutely necessary. Are we really still discussing this?

OMG! No touch id under the display. This is such a heartbreaking news.
There will be facial recognition which is much cooler and can be even less of a hassle IF they do it well!

I cannot fathom a good reason for completely abandoning Touch ID. It's ludicrous.
There will be facial recognition which will be much cooler and quicker if done well!

Is he under some sort of NDA? Blame Apple for leaking the data before it was ready for prime time.
The Apple Developer Program license agreement, section 2. Just because they make the resource available, purposely or otherwise, doesn’t mean it isn’t bound by some license, in this case, the one mentioned above.

Love: Tap to wake screen
Hate: No Touch ID.

They better kill it with the rumored Face ID. They did it with Touch ID. Competitors had terrible swiping mechanisms with high fail rates prior to Touch ID. I wonder if they’ll do something like LG’s Knock Code to unlock the device, that would be kinda cool.

OMG! Another Touch ID rumor. I will put my faith in Ming Kuo over Steven Troughton Smith. We will find out in approximately six weeks.

Edit: If it's not under the display, Apple likely has a another source using facial recognition that will appeal for some and others it won't. But it's not a compete shock at this point it won't be under the display, which Kuo predicted weeks back. But leave it to Apple to make the facial recognition scanner reliable.

Truth be told, for the time I had the Samsung S8, the facial scanner was reliable, I just did not like the concept of unlocking the phone with it. Truth be told I went back to my iPhone 6S cause I much prefer the touchid , gimmicks are not always better in my opinion. The touchid is one of the best user experiences and secure. Wish apple would stop following the competition, this new 8 just looks like a better S8..... it should out innovate the S8, and not just produce an apple version.
