Well glad I replaced my 6s Plus with a 7 Plus earlier this year, then. No reason to go for whatever this phone will have (a big screen? whoopie?).

There's a couple things I don't understand about this leak.

1. Why would they introduce tap to wake when we already have raise to wake?
Unless it will replace raise to wake?

2. If the home button is hidden sometimes then how do you exit an app?
Do you pinch to close like on an iPad? Or maybe you swipe from the bottom to reveal the "home area" with the home button, similar to swiping up to reveal the dock on iOS 11 on an iPad Pro?

Tap to wake is so you can have the phone on a table and tap to see if theres any notifications, if there is then raise the phone and it unlocks with faceid.
If they think faceid works as good as touch id they probably dont need it. Or if they want they probably build it into apple logo on the back as an extra unlock method

Because Apple chooses a design that makes it necessary doesn't mean that it is absolutely necessary. Are we really still discussing this?
Okay I agree with you there then. It isn't absolutely necessary, but in order to continue making advancements, it was.

Let's be truthful here; if it doesn't have Touch ID, they have balls. Simply put, I can't imagine a more risky move, irrespective of any newer methodology. Touch ID works perfectly and is known by hundreds of millions. To drop it is absolutely otherworldly.

I still question touch ID's existence or not. Apple is known to completely throw us off and then debut something that is completely contradictory to rumors which everybody seemingly believed. But I agree, touch ID is implemented exactly as how Apple intended it. And it works extremely well.

When has this really ever happened though? Especially recently and/or with regard to iPhones? I feel like it's the opposite, usually people seem to think the final product is gonna be totally different, but it isn't. Some people even thought the leaked iPhone 4 was a red herring. Absolutely hilarious. Like Apple has time to be making fully fit and finished fake products just to distract people. What a waste of money and time that would be. No, the leaks are real. That doesn't mean Touch ID definitely won't be on the device, but it's looking more and more likely it won't. I sure hope face auth works reliably then... they're really setting themselves up for a tough time here and it concerns me.

There will be facial recognition which is much cooler and can be even less of a hassle IF they do it well!

I disagree completely. I have a long commute and keep the phone in my pocket. I feel for the home button to summon Siri to read/send texts. Sometimes (randomly), Siri tells me I have to unlock my phone before reading a text. If they pull Touch ID, I will now be forced to pull the phone from my pocket and use my face to unlock? That's dangerous and very much a hassle. It wynot make sense to me. Also, the whole Apple Pay scenario.

So how will Apple pay work?

I have the same question. Any ideas? I have a 7 Plus so I'm not "due" to get a phone until next year, but was looking forward to the iPhone 8 or whatever it's going to be called.

It will have the TouchID on the back just like those early leaks have suggested.

However since we will also get facial recognition and the tap to wake feature, we wont have to rely on it as much. Probably for things like authentification after a reboot and ApplePay.

Why would Apple have bothered with a new TouchID on the iPhone 7 in the first place if it was to be replaced one generation later already

I'll try:

1. If it's lying on a table, and no button visible when screen is off, you need to be able to invoke and unlock it without lifting in. Tap to wake (and possibly unlock)

2. Button will probably be visible somehow when the screen is on.

Agreed. Apple has never thrown people off. Rather, some people treat all rumors equally and end up disappointed.

In this case, we have reliable heavyweights like Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities and Mark Gurman of Bloomberg saying no to Touch ID. If that didn't put the nail in the coffin, this firmware release should. In today's world, there's virtually no chance of completely hiding a high visibility product like iPhone under wraps through the entire supply chain.

Possibly in the same way Samsung have done it with the Galaxy S8. A hard press (force touch) of the screen where the home button is, yes you have to get to know where to press, but it doesn't take long. There's also the option to swipe up from the bottom to bring the task bar back into view for soft press activation.

This is all interesting stuff, but isn't he breaking the developer T&C by posting this stuff?

Yep, just checked the HomePod firmware myself, and not only was it able to predict the absence of TouchID, but it also told me how I'll die. This is truly a fantastic piece of software.

Haha :D It's only Siri going nuts. Don't trust her to much about serious things like...TouchID.

Exactly, something like that. I really don't think  would remove TouchID

Multiple identification is though something that will make security better. I'll welcome that.

Will be VERY interesting to finally see what will happen. After all these rumors and leaks.
Wonder somewhere how much of is planted by Apple by themselves just to stir up.

I think it's a matter what people choose to believe versus what's reality over distortion. Given touch ID is not likely to work under the display, only makes this more viable that Apple will likely be using facial recognition As the primary. Leaks are nothing more than using detective work to determine what seems legitimate or not. This leak seems like one of those that seem highly likely in my opinion

But then you have to ask yourself, do you really think Apple would compromise security with facial recognition not working reliably? Not a chance. This company values security at the upmost top of their expectations and whatever they have planned, it's certainly going to be an experience we just don't have an understanding of yet and how efficiently this technology will correlate in our daily lives.

Samsung also allows you to double tap the home button to wake up the screen to the lock screen and you can have it so the home button always stays lit.

Other Android phones like the google pixel allow you to double tap anywhere to wake up the screen.

Some bizarre conclusions drawn from some interesting findings. The fact that Steven Troughton-Smith didn’t find references to Touch ID in HomePod firmware somehow means that there is definitely no Touch ID in the iPhone 8? Well how do you explain the fact that there is TouchID code in iOS 11 that supports all those phones from 5S upwards? Is the lack of it in a prerelease version of HomePod firmware meant to imply Apple are going to switch off all TouchID? Obviously not.
