What an amusing litany of imaginary complaints.

"...and, like what about if I'm wearing a motorcycle helmet with a scarf over my face, in a blizzard, at midnight, and I need to quickly unlock my phone? What then, Stupid Apple®?"

And what do we feel is going to happen to people like this?

?

LOL!
Especially given that Timmy is all about Muslims...

For those comparing FaceID to TouchID and complaining...

You just enjoy putting your finger on your phone and watching it unlock. If FaceID works well, authentication will be completely transparent

Will face recognition work on previous iPhones. If not, why?

I wonder if somebody will be able to hack face recognition. I imagine you download a Cydia app and hold your phone agains the person whose phone you want to hack. The Cydia app then creates a pattern on your iPhone that will unlock the targeted iPhone. For instance, see how deep neural networks can be tricked

Or if your budy is asleep, take his phone, hold it against his face and post something on his Facebook wall. That's what I call a face rape.

What if you simply want to glance down at your phone to check the time or read a notification on your lock screen? I do this all the time with raise to wake and don't even unlock my phone. Will Face ID just automatically unlock the phone every time?

Perhaps there will be an indicator where the home button used to be where you have to "touch to initiate scan" or something similar?

"Press Home to Unlock"... exactly like Touch ID (?)

Makes sense they would keep that in there even without a physical home button. I guess in my head after reading all these reports, I was imagining Face ID would unlock your phone every time you simply raise to wake and then look at the phone. It would definitely make a lot more sense to require you to touch the home button first to initiate the facial scan.

Users will probably be able to enable/disable this in settings... just like today we can activate an option to ignore "Press Home to Unlock" when we put our fingers on Touch ID sensor.

I imagine

There’s your first problem

The Cydia app then creates a pattern on your iPhone that will unlock the targeted iPhone

And here’s your second. What magic protocol you do imagine takes information from one jailbroken (a stretch in itself, given the lack of jailbreaks) phone and magically transports into the Secure Enclave of a non jailbroken phone? What is the precedent for anything even vaguely like this? Are you aware of a similar thing for transmitting fingerprints? No? Me neither/

As long as it can lie flay on the table without the front camera's lens getting scratched up like with the current ones. Argh. Who thought the sticking out camera was a good idea?!

He means displaying an image to trick the phone into thinking it's a face. Probably not possible with just a screen because I'll bet the face scanner will use stereoscopic 3D.

It'll definitely make it easier for law enforcers to unlock suspect phones without asking for pin / password.

As we do not have anything to hide, we shouldn't be worried, right? RIGHT?
Gosh, just disable the feature if you're afraid of that.

Doubtful.

Cannot conceive a way where FaceID works in a retail environment, while driving, or at night or another application where the phone wouldnt have my face in view.

It uses infrared, night won't be a problem. When driving, aren't you using Siri? Not sure what you mean by "in a retail environment" - you mean buying stuff with Apple Pay? I agree, that sounds annoying, but I use an Apple Watch, so not my problem :p

That's a really good point! I can see this being a big thing in student dorms, for example.
Edit: Ah, except it'll require open eyes, I expect :)

"Another line includes a detail called "PEARL_AUTOLOCK", and iHelp BR theorizes this could be a security feature that automatically locks the iPhone when it detects someone trying to open it whose face doesn't match that of the authenticated user."

> Someone unlocks it with your sleepy face
> iPhone will lock again when it captures an unregistered face

I get that FaceID could be really good -- feels like Apple has been collecting a lot more data on this than on Siri, using the face detections stuff in Photos. But that still gets it wrong enough of the time that I wouldn't bet a thing on it. I'm also just curious about beards, sunglasses, etc.

It just seems like TouchID is more stable. And if it doesn't work nearly 100% of the time people are going to be pissed. I'm already frustrated when TiuchID doesn't work the time or two every couple of days because my hands are wet or whatever.
