Imagine if Face ID authenticated you before using Apple Pay and provided a small window of time for you to hold your phone to the terminal. This is similar to how Samsung Pay works. You can authenticate with your finger then hold the phone near the terminal without keeping your finger on the fingerprint scanner as you have to with Touch ID. If Face ID worked in this manner, it wouldn't be as awkward as some people are worried about with respect to having to hold your face in front of the phone while holding it near the payment terminal at the same time. I feel a Face ID implementation similar to this would be easier than Touch ID currently is. Every now and then if I hit up a McDonald's drive-thru, keeping your finger on Touch ID while the cashier is holding the terminal out of the window is certainly an awkward angle to hold your phone at at times. I often feel I'll drop it if I don't have the right grip on it. Face ID in a manner how I described would eliminate this concern.
But touchID already works like this. Put your finger on the scanner and then remove it, you have a time window to then pay. Try it!

Great. Now all the cops have to do to get into my phone is grab it and unlock it with my face. At least Touch ID required more cooperation and 10 finger options.

Suddenly everyone on Macrumors is a criminal. And not just a petty shoplifting-type criminal, but one that potentially commits crimes bad enough that police need to search through their phone.

This seems like a nice feature. My concern would be, what if someone picks my charging phone up off the table while I’m asleep and put its in front of my face to unlock it. At least with TouchID, they would have to grab my hand and chances are, I would wake up to notice it.

Just a random thought...definitely first world problems.
If intruders have access to your phone and your unconscious body, you have bigger problems. Talk about a ridiculous fringe edge case.

In the dark does not matter. Ever heard of infrared (invisible light)?

Hey Siri? :)

Seriously though....the way articles are written it sounds like Apple just thought they needed to get the infinity screen and then work out the rest later. Doesn't sound like Apple. If anything we know that Apple is slow to introduce new features that others have and only tends to do it when they are ready for it. So the idea of the touchid (an integral function of apples DNA) is an afterthought is daft.
Evolution may be face ID but I don't think they started with the screen display.

Yep, seems we have lots on here who spend times in interview rooms in Police stations......

It will replace Touch ID I think, it's not necessarily a bad thing either, it seems Apple have put a lot of thought into this and it will a more advanced system. Expect Apple to do with facial scanning what they did with Touch ID.

This is good but also bad. This will make it too easy for someone to unlock your phone without your permission. Police custody? Police walks in the interrogation room and places phone on table facing you, and it unlocks!? Girlfriend, boyfriend/ spouse? They say it’s more data points and more secure than Touch ID, sure. But it’s also easier to unlock your phone without your permission, essentially making it less secure.

Someone please explain! Am I wrong?

Yep, discontinue it when something else comes along that that can excite everyone!!

No more wrong than being forced to put your finger on the button to unlock.

Again, you refuse to think otherwise and acknowledge others opinions, but your condescending tone doesn't devalue my viewpoint, It's just you don't agree with it. But truthfully, research past history leaks with these consistent annual 'Mistakes'. But I can't put the examples in front of you if you fail to see otherwise.
You usually make pretty respectful and well thought out posts, but this one, and the one before it were pretty condescending too. I doubt they would intentionally leak such headlining features personally, but it's possible. Either way, the other guy is also entitled to his opinion.

For a start that's a BIG exaggeration (at least here in the U.K) NO police officer can walk into a room with your mobile phone and place it in front of you, with the intention of getting you to unlock it or not!!! secondly if your spouse girlfriend/boyfriend is that untrusting that they trick you into unlocking your phone (which may not work anyway) then you more issues to worry about, trust being one of them!!

People need to stop with this silliness, the exact same thing happened before Touch ID was announced, people were posting on this forum how others could cut off your finger in order to get access to your phone and so on, it was nonsense and people took to Touch ID like a duck to water. Apple know what they are doing IF Touch ID is being replaced with facial recognition then I'm sure Apple have locked it down, gone through a lot of issues and thought about a lot of situations in which people will be using the phone, if after Apple announce everything on stage at next months event people are not happy, don't buy the iPhone 8 no one is forcing you or anyone into anything.

I'll have to give that a try. Anytime I've ever watched video demos or used it, it's always shown the thumb being held on the scanner while near the terminal as well as that's how I've always used it. The hassle is finding a place where I can use it. Not enoug places around me accept it which is a shame. Takes a special trip to a place I don't typically frequent, such as McDonald's or Subway, just to even use it. Either way, Face ID could still be implemented in the same manner, and I feel it would often be easier to authenticate using my face. If the face sensors were wider angled, quicker, and more accurate than Samsung's implementation, it would be easier to have the sensors detect my face than having to shift the phone down to a lower grip to ensure its low enough for my thumb to reach the Touch ID sensor. I have the Plus model, and I feel it's always a bit of a balancing act using my index and pinky fingers to brace the phone while I position my thumb on the sensor. It's by no means complicated, just a bit of a pain at times.

I stumbled upon the word "pilot" in the HomePod FW.
My iPhone 8 will not only recognize me, but also registered the 298 passengers in the Boeing 747 and their pilot's ID to verify the risk profile of them flying over...

Thank you for your feedback. Although, I disagree with you. I made my point without making snide off topic comments or put downs for someone else's opinion. I made my opinion on why I believe the HomePod was leaked and stood by it. I was not being dismissive Or failing to view others viewpoints, unless I offered a valid argument in return. Furthermore, Nor did I suggest someone else can't have an opinion. But part of discussion is also allowing the other to make an opinion without suggesting they are consistently 'wrong', when opinions don't generally have to be wrong . Discussions are meant to be two dimensional.

More so about the HomePod, it's too many times over the years, we have seen time after time these "Unintentional" leaks Surface where it's so cleverly executed or conspicuously located in some obscure way. It's my belief, that I no longer believe that these leaks are unintentional. This is Apple's way of using silent marketing to build hype and keep the HomePod relevant in the headlines. This is a Company that has many different methods of using cunning measures without being suspected if it was intentional.

Cops can’t force you to put your finger on your phone to unlock it. You also have 10 fingers to choose from so even if they did it will be a guessing game. You only have 1 face!

Sir I don’t think it’s an exaggeration. Here in the US cops seem to do what they want to and always get away with it. A lot of people have a lot to hide. It may not apply to you, doesn’t mean it won’t apply to others.

Can't use wrong own face to trigger passcode unlock, too...

Glassed Silver:ios

There are a ton of potential problems/ways in which this would be worse than touchID, most of which have been mentioned here. Nonetheless, I guess I trust Apple to implement it in a way that doesn't suck. Still think having it in addition to touchID, rather than instead of, would be better.

Probably not a huge deal to get an iPhone 8, but well.... who knows .... We will see just about any excuse to get that new shiny device. It may end up with "Yay.. now i can use my face to unlock my phone without even touching it" as an reason.

I guess stranger things have happened.

This was the line I was talking about

"Thanks for your opinion. I Understand you don't get it and you can't see past your own views. But there's no doubt Apple leaked this information intentionally and I have no reason to believe otherwise, regardless of what Phil Schiller stated."

It seemed dismissive of his opinion. Anyway, no biggie.

If they got rid of Touch ID it would NEVER come back. It's the most absurd suggestion.
[doublepost=1502042471][/doublepost]
They aren't concerns, they're facts

Why, because it would be an admission that they made a mistake and Apple can't do that. Have you found TouchID very beneficial or not? Never say never.

It was not dismissive at all and I think you misconstrued my post, which inevitably can happe . Which is also why I accepted the OP's opinion by stating thank you for offering it. Furthermore, I stated why I believe my in opinion and The viewpoints indicate otherwise why it's not a One side discussion regarding the leaked HomePod coding. Not everyone will share the same two interpretations on the internet, even if some refuse to see others opinions.

Anyone know the number of hands and fingers cut off by phone thiefs when Touch-ID was introduced on the 5s? I remember this forum predicted an outright epidemic :p
No seriously folks, Apple has security in mind when they introduce a new biometric feature, that include plausible scenarios, and the not so plausible. No need to panic imo.
