guys, you are confusing stereo SOUND (not speakers) with surround sound
homePOD IS NOT ABLE TO PRODUCE STEREO IN AN OPEN PLACE...since homePOD is for home where are walls, the sound is projected in stereo thanks to that

7 Inches does not equal good sound.
I take my 1 meter high and 60 KG reference speaker over this any day, coupled with
a tube amplifier.
Yes, I know....can't compare them.

I thought this HomePod was actually quite a bit taller like 15".

“Hey Siri, tell Spotify to play my morning playlist on HomePod.”

That’s the dream. Unfortunately - doesn’t work:

I think the contention is it will be very effective, especially for most people - remember how magical the Bose Acoustimass was to people? The first time I heard it, I thought, missing mids, screeching highs, muddy mid-bass. Also there seems to only be a few folks who understand some of the basics of sound engineering ...

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but most of the time, these things detach. Wouldn't be surprised at all if it was just another lightning cable.
Nah. At peak volume this thing is going to be pulling some serious power. It would be at the very edge of what USB/Lightening could provide at the very least and why add the cost/complexity? If it proves popular I wouldn't surprised to see a portable (perhaps Beats branded) variant.

Does anyone know if Apple TV will be able to be used for multi-room audio? Really don't want to have to buy multiple overpriced speakers to accomplish this.

Went with Sonos two years ago and couldn't be happier. Added a Sonos One and it fit's my needs perfectly and cheaper.

A pair of these can be used as Audit output from ATV4K once AirPlay2 is launched, correct?

Yeah, I wouldn't mind one of these if it was battery powered and half the price. I love my Sonos speakers but really want a portable option that I can take outside

I have a full 7.1 surround setup at home, and while I love it, I don't like the fact it takes over my lounge. With the homepod being a sonos competitor, is it safe to assume this includes the home theatre setup too? While it won't sound as good, it would be awesome to have a wireless surround system that sounds good, and actually it may even fill my room better due to it sending sound off in all directions.

Only issue I can see with this is whether or not the Apple TV can ARC the sound to other devices connected to the TV.

I guess I can get one or two. But I really would prefer Apple come with something that can run a full Apple TV via voice into room. Don't have a need for a big speaker in most Applications. Also would be amazing if Apple didn't lock down it to Apple applications only. I.e. Add Spotify, pandora, Hulu, and other apps to be voice commanded.

I've determined that what I actually want is a HomePod, with an AppleTV inside it. That may sound strange, but the Apple TV + soundbar is the media centerpiece of my house, and I can't square a way that Home Pod is at all useful if disconnected from that.

You can actually snag one for 79 if you time it right, Amazon seems to discount it often and that's the issue I have. I'm happy with my Echo, what does the the HomePod give me that the Echo doesn't? Especially given the exorbitant pricing

Major competitive difference is amazon data mines everything you say, Apple is more restrictive of your privacy

My $35 echo dot runs circles around this thing.
lol.

I own 6 Echo Dot's, but COME ON, that is a ridiculous statement.

Is it likely more capable as far as home automation goes since it's not locked into the HomeKit ecosystem? sure.

Does the Echo Dot sound absolutely terrible and like a tin can when not hooked up to another speaker? yes.

You're comparing grapes to raisins here.

you get it. i don't understand why it's so hard for people to realize this.

it's not truly stereo with only having the one woofer, but it's also not mono either.

The Sonos Play 3 has stereo speakers that are separated, the Sonos Play 1/One which is about the equivalent of the HomePod in terms of speaker placement, is not advertised as stereo FYI:

https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/play1.html

Yet the Play 3 is backwards. Two woofers and a single tweeter. And the two woofers both face forward so they are EXTREMELY limited in creating any kind of stereo soundstage the listener could ever hear. Same goes for the Google Home Max, where the drivers also face forward and are very close together.

Plus neither of them have beamforming, which allows Apple to direct the sound where they want. Going to be interesting to see how they use this in practice.
