Does anyone know if the cord is built in or detaches?

I'm not sure, but this looks like it may be fixed

I'd like to own one because of how awesome the sound everyone has said it has. However I simple refuse if it doesn't support spotify. It's such a dumb decision by apple if they never allow you to use it with spotify... it's tiwce as big as spotify and still growing at a faster rate despite already having far more users.

It's a shame they're going to lock out the majority of the market due to their obsession with trying to get people to only use apple software.

I firmly believe it's a big reason Siri has never taken off. I'd love at times to be able to ask it for directions or spotify but I can't because I only want to use google maps and spotify... so I sacrafice the siri functionality since it doesn't support them. It's one of the main things that really annoys me with apple. Maybe this is just me and not the case for many others but siri seems like it has so much potential that apple have just wasted away if they gave third party developers much more power to use it. Like why can't they allow any developer they like to use voice commands for it and then you just get a prompt 'allow X app to use siri' like you do for notifications and location services.

They do know the Echo is $99, right?

I'm not a huge fan of HomePod but in all fairness Amazon's pricing of the Echo is based on the fact Echo generates a ton of data for Amazon. OTOH Homekit devices are more expensive, but you aren't selling your soul (literally) to get them. So there is a trade off there. I love Echo's lineup and wish Apple would duplicate it. I won't be buying HomePod because it doesn't fit my needs -- too big, too expensive. But I can't buy into Echo either.

Why do you call it 'their' obsession? You're the one who seems to have a problem with it.

Everyone? The only place it's been heard was at Apple's announcement. And even then the press could not touch it. It's never been truly reviewed so you can't honestly say it sounds "awesome" because we don't know how it sounds outside Apple's confined show area. We have to wait for the real reviews, which I'm guessing should be today or tomorrow if it's going on pre-sale Friday.

Any guesstimation when reviews will go live? Asking for a Apple fiend( Me)

Because it is an obsession with apple. For years they didn't even allow you to remove stock apps from your list of apps on your phone. You still can't change the default apps on iOS... you've been able to do this on every other mobile or non mobile OS for absolutely any piece of software since forever, but not on iOS, but have to have mail and safari set as default.

I really think it just puts more people off when you try to force people to use something, that strategy just doesn't work. It's failed for other companies... just look when xbox tried to force people into using kinect when the xbox one first came out. Yeah that worked well.

Another assistant loaded speaker that is really not needed.

In the 80's most people thought personal computers weren't needed.
In the 90's most people thought the internet wasn't needed.
In 2007 most people thought smartphones weren't really needed.
In 2010 most people thought the iPad wasn't really needed.
In 2015 most people thought smartwatches weren't really needed.

Home automation + smart assistants is gonna be huge. The industry is still in it's infancy, even today.
