With that idea, the Mini should have contained a battery and been MagSafe compatible. That would have made it play Apple Music almost anywhere. Bluetooth playback capability would have made it play Apple any music anywhere. A couple of missed opportunities imo.

Not really. More cost. Apple will do fine selling the Mini the way it is.

Why would you need it detachable?
Oh, it’s detachable. There’s nothing that determination and a pipe wrench of appropriate size can’t detach.

You ahh... you will very likely not be able to re-attach it. Not the same way it was, at least, but that’s not my problem. I’m a licensed and bonded Detach Engineer. For re-attachment you’ll have to call someone else.

But I’m confused, weren’t households already packed with usb-c chargers and including one in a box was bad for the environment? Or is it only harmful when included with a phone?
Pretty sure Apple meant you had USB A chargers to use with USB A cables you already accumulated. And the USB C cable is to transition out of that

That exactly what I said - it's a dealbreaker it's NOT like a bluetooth speaker
I was hoping it would be a car. It’s a dealbreaker for me that it’s not a car.

But seriously, I have the Google Nest mesh WiFi things, and if these could be used like those I’d be really regretful I pulled the trigger with Google or I’d maybe even switch. I also ordered 4th Gen Amazon Echo Dots with the alarm clock built in because we’re trying to stop using our phones in bed, and I’d cancel my order for those if these had a visible clock. Two similar products that I would love to replace with these if these offered additional features.

I love the excuses of why it should be detachable, the chances of breaking the cord are virtually nil, you'd have to go out of your way to even attempt it.. The only remotely valid excuse is perhaps being able to route the cord through something to install it.. and there are slew of devices where this is true..

If it were detachable, then we'd hear complaints that its coming unplugged in some fashion....
I don't go out of my way to break my iPhone cable and that thing only lasts a few months. Assuming I pick up the homepod once a week, should I expect to get a year out of it?

When it does come unplugged the complaints will be louder.

That's pretty shortsighted thinking imo. Sure, more cost initially. A device that isn't ecosystem locked and has more functionality can have a more universal appeal and generate more sales. I think that was the primary issue with the original HomePod. That device could have had way more sales with BT and additional i/o.

I definitely think a HomePod Mini at $130-150 with MagSafe, BT, and line i/o would appeal to more people and outsell a HomePod Mini at $100 currently configured.

These threads are always filled with people complaining about crazy basic things. 🤣 I love it.
fixed it for you
Having a non-detachable cable that even ends in a USB-C connector feels like last the 90s...
Only 20 Watts?! Don't expect a lot of volume or bass from the mini.
What did you expect from a device that size?

Asthetics aside, I don't understand why a standard "figure 8" cable wouldn't have been a better option / solution. Since most people point the power cable out the back, or in a way that it is otherwise hidden, I don't see why they can't use a standard plug on both of these, or simply have a USB-C port on the mini.

I travel with my HomePod and have removed then modified (sanded down the ridges) the power cord so it can be detached for packaging. Before I did this, I started to notice damage to the base of the cable from winding it around the HomePod for travel.

But I’m confused, weren’t households already packed with usb-c chargers and including one in a box was bad for the environment? Or is it only harmful when included with a phone?

Likely because a phone can share a cable / power plug much easier than a device that is intended to be plugged in 100% of the time.

Ha ha, that was completely silly and pointless, but damn you made me laugh!

No, I don't think so. I suspect Apple's goal was to hit a less than $100 target, in order to get a lot of people hooked into HomePods. And no doubt future HomePod devices as they're released. I'm betting there will be a family of devices going forward.

A good strategy.
