I tried the steamy bathroom method on my girlfriends phone. It worked perfectly. There was one little bubble, but it seemed to be easier to smooth out in the moist air.

You just need to have patience. I know for the protector that I'm using it requires a wait period for the bubbles to dissipate.

It really depends. Some protectors do not have a web application. However, I find it more efficient imo.

Dont use a rag or cloth to clean the dust/screen cause it carries dust. Also avoid the outdoors or windy area, dont breath lol. and gently but quickly align it and slam it on there. but it is pretty annoying having dust bubbles, you cant even get those out.

Yes you can with tape. It works.

I do the fog up the bathroom trick and use the SGP screen protectors. I still have the same one I applied post 4S launch. It has a spot in the bottom left corner from where my phone came out of my pocket while shooting a basketball and fell on the asphalt. Didn't hurt my phone in anyway other than that spot on the screen protector.

Applying a screen protector is more along the lines of a fine art, than a process. Use the foggy bathroom trick when your first starting out. Install them for friends/family and what not. Eventually, the foggy bathroom isnt needed once your pretty quick at the application. Microfiber it, apply it, use a piece of tape (wrapped around your finger, inside out) to lift the corners to grab any dust particles...lay it back down, buff out bubbles...all done.

And like many have said, quality matters. Spend the extra. Power Support/SGP being the best. I also will use Switcheasy protectors as well, there clear rainbows a tiny bit, but not really dealbreakingly. Stay away from eBay, in my experience.

My 2 cents.

I put on a cheap ebay screen protector on my 4s the day I got it and after 8 months it looks flawless except a few light scratches that can be seen at an angle. No bubbles, no peeling/discoloration. So I guess in my case, I got more than what I paid for. I'm also a pro at applying them. I do all my friends for them. My 4s is white too, which makes it super tricky with the reflection. You just gotta take your time, and make sure it lines up as good as possible.

Almost 2 years with the same Power Support crystal screen protector and SGP incredible shield ultra matte body protector for sides and back. I've tried both the SGP ultra crystal and oleophobic screen protectors and preferred the Power Support crystal.

The SGP matte body shield on the bottom and on one of the sides came off already and the back is starting to come off near one of the corners as you can see from the picture. I actually replaced the sides twice already in 2 years.

The Power Support screen protector on the front is scratched but not coming off anywhere yet.

Both were very easy to apply and I just made sure I cleaned the surface throughly with a lint free cloth first. I just turned the air conditioning off to make sure nothing would be blowing in the room when I did the application.

Installing those things are painful but I do it for myself and my gf. I get them from ebay if Im not in immediate need. I'm not quite sure why people are dissing the eBay cheapies. I've used them and they are fine. I also use the HD anti glare from Walmart which is whats on my 4s but they are like $12 for 3.

After reading this I guess I was right all screen protectors hinder the retina display somewhat.

I noticed absolutely no degradation of quality in the retina display with SGP ultra crystal and oleophobic and the Power Support crystal. Any protector that is anti-fingerprint or anti-glare will reduce quality but not with high quality clear (crystal) types.

I spend the money to get the good ones when I get a new phone and i'm good at installing them. I've never had a problem and they last for years. I think the best advice I can offer is the cheap ones from ebay suck.
