Multiple Libraries

I'd like the ability to load multiple libraries, similar to how iCal loads calendars. That way, I could have a set of tunes that are "shared" between users on the same machine, and a private set per user.

Yup, gapless playback for iPods and multiple tags (albums, artists, genres, etc.) are the only additional things I really need from iTunes.

i don't think i'd use it but i'm sure some people would like to have Playlist artwork. It'd be nice to have a custom cover if it was a particularly special choice.

Also, this will need a) creativity b) drugs to fully understand:

Have iTunes be able to have music shortcuts, that draw from a full list of music files. I have R.E.M.'s (for example) Automatic for the People CD, and In Time best of CD. I have multiple nightswimmings, sidewinder sleeps tonights, man on the moons, etc. I only want one.

Good idea but isn't this the same point made in the original post?

I'd like the ability to organise playlists into folders, instead of displaying in one alphabetical list, rather like what we have in iPhoto.

Finally found the older version of this thread, and a repost where I quoted myself with my wish-list for iTunes 5:
1. The ability to "merge" files, so that if you have the same song on two or more albums (e.g. the original album, a collection and a compilation) you only need one physical file, and link to that from all places (thus also updating a common playcount etc for the song nomatter which album you're listening to). Having multiple instances of the same object is bad database design...

2. Better and more specialiced conditions e.g. the ability to say (A and B) or (C and D) or (E and F), without making three helping playlists and on random playlists the ability to say (like in Party Shuffle) "play higher rated songs more often".

3. Playlists in folders (like iPhoto).

4. The possibility to split tracks and remove parts (to seperate and identify bonus tracks, without having to have two instances - this problem is not that unlike #1) - or at least that when you set a Start Time or Stop Time in the option for a track that the iPod also gets (and reacts to) that information - its very annoying when I've "cut" away a bit of a track, and it sounds like I want it in iTunes, but NOT on my iPod mini (might be an iPod problem, but I had to get it off my chest )

5. Continious play (for albums like Pink Floyd "The Wall") without making the intire album into one track.

6. That iTunes recognices CD-Rs longer than 74 minutes, so you can burn 80 min CDs.

7. The ability to have an album connected to the main artist, but still mark collabarations with "Artist1 feat. Artist2" or "Artist3 with Artist4" and let them show up when you browse Artist1, -2, -3 or -4, respectivly. Now it will make a new arist (an folder) with "Artist1 feat. Artist2" and if you choose Artist1 and than the album, that track will not show in the browser...

8. Artwork seperated from the music files (in its own metafile?) and just linked in, it takes very much unnecessary space to have the image included into every songs file (at least with larger scans). Again poor database design...

I agree. Virtually all of my MP3s have album art. When stored on a 200 gig hard drive, no big deal, but I cant imagine how much extra space is taken up on my iPod with the album art. At the very least, iTunes can trash the album art from the MP3s on the iPod when syncing, and even better, keep it out of the MP3 file alltogether, sicne I burn MP3 CDs for my car and 700 megs is hardly enough as it is to get everything I want.

sorry for starting a new thread. i did look honest! just didn't go back far enough..

this isn't a hope as such but i was surprised that apple didn't reskin itunes/iphoto/finder/quicktime to match the new top bar in Tiger... perhaps it was so they wouldn't look out of place for people running older versions of the OS?

1. Undo that actually works.
2. Playlist folders
3. CD-TEXT support
4. Multiple libraries
5. ID3 tags changeable from the main interface.

Audio Imput Visualization...

So I can connect a Microphone or the line output from the DJ mixer and have iTunes visuals based on his music.

Or if you have a band you can have iTunes visuals in real time.

I am a VJ, can you tell? :D

I know it's sad..

But more reliability for the Windows version. But that won't be needed for me pretty soon. I am almost halfway to my iBook.

Wishlist

- Gapless playback
- Native FLAC & Vorbis support
- More flexible tags (eg. Multiple Artists, or custom, user-made, tags)
- Get rid of that Brushed Metal nonsense.
- Better control over how it manage your library (eg. allowing to customize how it names your files).

1. Make it more efficient. Late versions of iTunes are using lots of memory and CPU power to run, which is not good if you're only listening to music on the background while, say, working on a photo.
2. The ability to define whether I want crossfading or continuous play separately on different playlists.
3. A new counter, maybe "monthly" which tracks which are the songs you're listening to the most lately. The "play count" feature is cool, but from all the usage since I got it, on my Most Played playlist I just have monolithic tracks with over a 100 plays, so it remains pretty much the same with time. I would like something that keeps track of what I'm enjoying the most at the time...
4. show the "invisible" PLAY ORDER playlist.

Thanks, Steve...! :D

Simplify the interface

I wish that the bottom the window, which use to be so simple in version 1.0, could be customizeable so that you could get rid of some things that you don't often use. Simply add a customize toolbar option in many other Mac OS X apps.

Having a album art, video playback, equalizer, visualizer, and eject button is overkill for a poweruser who might want to turn those off for a cleaner look, and activate them using keyboard commands.

obviously it's not the same but you could use audioscrobbler for this purpose. It's a little app that records all the songs that you listen to on an online database. it shows what you've listened to the most overall/in the last week/etc and has features like most listened to artist and track.

the results can be surprising!

it's also quite good for finding out about bands you might like because it compares people's tastes and recommends bands that people (people that like bands you like) like.

that was the worst sentence ever..

Although I really like iTunes, it is the app with the most potential. Here is my extensive list:

• alarm-clock ability to wake from sleep and play iTunes for example
• be able to change the delete option with tab (from no to yes)
• sleep function
• fully functional undo option for all actions
• more album based sorting, etc. features in addition to all the song based features
• Let me select genres as a source for Party Shuffle
• sync option to sync Play Counts/Last played dates/etc. to/between the same song in different bit-rates. i.e. have Lossless at home and 192kbps on notebook or iPod
• nested playlists
• more radio stations
• when I search for a song highlight the playlists it is in
• Ability to lock playlists from accidental deletion or removing songs
• Output of sound to Airport Express and headphone jack at the same time

Oh god yes that is so needed!

I've deleted three playlists by accident.

It sucks so much.

At least now I have figured out how to get the playlist back.

(if you have an iPod)

create an on the go playlists of this playlists while it's still on your iPod before you sync to the computer.

Then you can rename the on the go playlists to what you lost!

what i REALLY want is the ability to 'double-tag' a single file.

that is to say to be able to have one file listed in 2 places in my library. For example, if a track appears on a film soundtrack that i already have on an album in my library i could just tell itunes to link both songs to the same file.

one for the neatness freaks and completists this one i think!

Yes that "double tag" feature would be awsome. Ive slowly become more of a neat freak on my computer and that would help my life aton. If they were to do that I hope then they will have a smart album art. So that the CDs art doesn't show up on another one.

1) AAC VBR

2) HE-AAC

3) Native OGG Vorbis

4) Gapless Playback

5) (Correct me if I am wrong) Ability to turn off "auto-sync" for iPods before connecting the device (ie. making sure you don't have to sacrifice your music before you tell it not to).

6) Broadcast your own music (yes, yes, I know)

I second (or third or whatever we are up to) being able to have multiple tags and gapless playback

Gapless playback could be acomplished if the cd was ripped as 1 big file and had some sort of cue file so that each track existed as a sepetate entity in itunes, the current way with 1 long file and 1 entity in itunes just plain sucks

About the multiple tags thing, we really need to be able to have multiple tags for artist and genre, this is important for classical music because there are often several composers, its important for my music because i find some songs fall into more than one genre

I'm another who wants multiple tag entries for the same kind of tag. I have a lot of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese music, and it would be nice for, say, the song title, to be able to switch between showing it in its original language, and the English translation of the title.
