The 3GS firmware... 05.12

So after having my iPhone replaced I had great service yesterday. Early this morning I jailbroke it with Spirit and....still have great service!

I installed all my Cydia apps, put all my data back on, and have been running it all day without issue. Texting/phone calls, everything is working great!

So while I cannot deny that there was some issue with Spirit on the phone I had replaced I think that issue is gone now. Within minutes after jailbreaking the other phone with Spirit I lost service and was caught in an endless loop of Searching... and No Service. I don't know what boot rom that phone had, but it did have the latest OS 4.0 (beta 3) modem firmware on it because I had previously upgraded to the 4.0 beta. The new phone has modem firmware 3.12.01 on it.

Maybe that was the reason? OP, what modem firmware are you running on your phones that are having issues?

Interesting.

I really hope the Spirit team can figure this out because it's obviously making some iPhones completely unusable while others have no issues.

I agree. If a jailbreak inhibits the already crappy reception of the iPhone, it's worthless. If they're going to put out software that claims to improve the phone, it certainly hasn't done so in my experience. I've had to go back to Apple's factory condition -- gagg... now I might as well go to Droid, lol

Just to chime in

I just wanted to share I've been having the same issue on both of the 3GSs I have in my house (I live in Orlando/Kissimmee area). So I don't know if it's neccisarily restricted to the band overlap.

Edit: Both phones have never had the beta OS installed.

And the Spirit team has been completely unresponsive regarding all inquiries. Bummer. Not Dev Team or Geohot, that's for sure. SPIRIT = FAIL

More reports now streaming in... guess I was just the first to report it... any everyone was saying I am crazy...

Still no response from the Spirit camp... lame... if you're going to put out a jailbreak you should be around to work through the bugs as they come in.

Oh well, comon Dev Team, release a REAL jailbreak!

latest 3GS 3.1.3
modem 5.12.01

Used my device IN and around NYC for 3 days, no anomalies.

as big as the NY market is, id say if this was a significant issue there'd be threads all over... The remark to the effect of "info pouring in" and referencing a single new topic is a stretch.

You're pretty much the only one rattling swords about Spirit. If you dont like it, stop using it. No sense in off color remarks about their J/B.

Good luck

BlackRa1n also got a bad rep for WIFI issues Geohotz reported over and over the issue was not Blackra1n.

So the consensus is.....

..... don't jailbreak with Spirit? (till this gets fixed)

r.

There are plenty of others who jailbroke without issues, but MY finding was that Spirit screwed up my phone to the point of being unusable. Many others are finding the same thing.

However, doing a restore makes the issue go away, so the net-net is if you do it and experience reception issues you can just restore and no harm done. :)

all i see here is a lot of whining and dissing the devs who have put a lot of time and effort into releasing a jailbreak.

you should be thankful you were even able to jailbreak 3.1.3 in the first place.

dont be so harsh on the devs.

I'll chime in by saying that based on limited evidence Spirit appears to work fine for the majority of people. There are a handful of people having issues that they believe are related to Spirit, and they're reporting it in this thread. I personally find statements implying that this is a wide spread issue to be misleading as there is no evidence to support that assertion.

There may be issues with Spirit but at the moment they don't appear to be very wide spread. Not that it should matter at all, but I used Spirit 2 weeks ago today and have had no issues since.

I'm in Toronto (Canada), and have experienced intermittent drop-outs, and "Searching..." for extended periods of time, since jailbreaking with Spirit. I had issues when I had blackra1n as well, so I'm not too bothered by this - it's a small price to pay for all the advantages jailbreaking brings.

used Spirit on both iPhones last week and have had no problems in Houston, Nashville and the mutha of all problem areas Philly. I’ve been very pleased and am doing the :)iPads today

I can confirm this as well

I'm in NJ with AT&T and I switched from Verizon for the iPhone 3GS last August
I've had relatively few complaints and few dropped calls maybe one a month when using the phone for 200-300 mins a month.

I was stock until May 2nd when Spirit came out, running 3.1.3 and the newest 5.12 baseband

I think the problem may be that the issue isn't a complete failure of the device but a definite degradation of service.

Since jail braking, my best friend has noticed frequent drop outs of my voice when on the phone and I have noticed a lot of dropped calls, I would say 60% of my calls drop once, especially while in a moving car, on bluetooth.

In my home where signal has always been marginal, but I've never had problems I have also had frequent dropped calls and short periods of seeing the No Service icon, which I can honestly say I had never seen on my Phone since I got it. We have 3G pretty much everywhere in NJ, but I know 850 and 1900 are both used for edge/3G around here.

So their is an issue, but it might not effect everyone. I am probably going to stick with my jailbrake until 4.0 comes out, it's a shame because I actually bought MyWi, which is an excellent app and is the reason I jailbraked, but if I can't make a reliable call on my cell phone it's not worth it.

AT&T has a hard enough time not dropping calls without adding jail break instability to it.

FYI the "mutha" of all problem areas are widely accepted as New York and San Francisco. I don't even see complaints from Philly.

Interesting, another report from an 800\1900 layover area. Remember people, MOST areas are EITHER 1900 or 800(850)... but not both. So this is more and more convincing that this is occurring in areas like mine where there is overlay, as when I travel to areas where it's not, my issues discontinue.

I am having the same issue on my 3.1.2 3GS, but I am on Blackra1n not Spirit. I am actually thinking abou re-jailbreaking using Spriit because of the problem but looks like that may not be the solution...

Ive been getting this "Searching..." thing on my 3GS for a long time now since I jailbroke......im used to it now and it doesnt bother me, lol

I didnt use Spirit either....and it only seems to happen when im browsing the net... or using data

haha...how doesn't that bother you?

Jailbroke with Spirit on 3GS 32G 3.1.3 FW and reside in NYC(Queens)(Work in Manhattan). Absolutely no issues at all yet. I also didn't do a clean wipe but a restore from 3.1.2 FW Blackra1n JB.

i'd say try it do this restore it back to factory for a week or two then from there decide if you want to rejailbreak it using balckra1n or spirit or keep it factory. if you restore it as new you should know if something changed in your area or it was the Jailbreak.

works fine when restored but then as soon as it's jailbroken again it goes bye bye

I used Spirit to jailbreak my 16GB factory unlocked 3GS with no apparent reception problems in Michigan.
