This is probably a special policy for iPhones. It may not matter in the end but I wouldn't risk it. If the new rules in the US are any indication, you won't be able to pay cash for it either. I'd make alternative payment arrangements in case you find you've queued up for hours for no reason.

you certainly can't pay cash for it. It was on the O2 website (http://www.o2.co.uk/iPhone-Availability.html) that they will not accept cash. only credit or debit card. Incidentally they don't say anything about Visa Electron or Solo cards.

i phoned the apple store regent street and i can pay for it in any way apparently? i really hope this is the case as i only have a Solo Card :( :(

it is true, you cant pay for the iPhones with cash, Credit/Debit card only, and i think the Visa Electron/Solo, is because these are given to 16 year olds when first opening a bank account, so they would buy the phone then find out they cant use it cos they got to be 18 to sign up to a contract.

Ok I just rung them and

Apple store regent street DOES EXCEPT Visa Electron cards for iPhones
I think he meant for the contract.. not the actual phone and for Apple to prevent under 18s buying the phone they've stopped people using cards that work for under 18s.

You also can't purchase train tickets off the web with a Visa Electron, how stupid is that!

Explain the problem with that one!

I don't think foreign Maestro cards are the same as UK ones, UK ones still using the old style "Switch" system. This is from what I remember reading on Wikipedia so who knows if that's true.

Does anyone know if the o2 store will do what the US Apple stores seem to do, £1 on the card the rest in cash?

Possibly, as they will get your details that way, but it may be best to call them in advance and ask.

That will be because it requires online authorisation and none of the train companies support that yet - quite ironic seeing as it's already online. The other half of the reason is that FastTicket can't authorise the card when you collect tickets so they decided not to accept them at all.

I have been to two o2 shops, Tonbridge & Tunbridge Wells and both have said that they are only accepting payment by a credit or debit card excluding Solo... With no part payment.

Hopefully the Apple Stores will not use this same policy and allow part payment!!

This is ridiculous. They should accept all cards.
But Apple and o2 are buttholes who want to do all they can to ensure you will take up the contract for the expensive piece of hardware you just paid an unsubsidised amount for. There for no kiddies with their wanky Electrons. Credit cards puleeeaze!

sorry to drag up an old-ish thread, i WAS planning on using a friends card to pay for this after the o2 store turned me down in cash, but he has Solo...can anyone confirm if Solo cards can still be used online to purchase the iPhone?

I noticed that and thought it a bit odd at the time in view of all the suggestions beforehand to the contrary.

The Apple store accepted cash on release day only (presumably so that anyone who had queued for hours unaware of the credit card-only policy would not be p****d off). They made it clear the policy would be in force the following day

The Apple staff in Glasgow claimed the card only rule was for America only :D They made no mention of for one day only but that does make more sense.

i went into o2 with my solo card only to be told that i wouldnt be able to purchase an iphone with that card

walked a few shops down to carphone warehouse and it worked fine ;)
