I'm afraid not. Apparently, Hotmail uses the POP3 protocol where messages are only downloaded, as opposed to IMAP or other protocols where the mail app and the server communicate changes.

I have 2xyahoo, hotmail, .me and gmail all e-mail accounts on my ipod.

Hotmail is my oldest, and someday I will make the effort to switch eveything over, but for now at least I have a way of deleting e-mails and not have a pop up on my comptuer telling me that I have 397 e-mails in my hotmail in box, thank god no more guilt over the negelected hotmail inbox. G-mail is meant to be my throw away account to replace hotmail, someday....

for those of you that cant get it to work its very simple. if you live in the usa you will need to change your location to uk in your hotmail settings. you need to change your location and work location. (twice) i just did that and i got my emails and i sent one to another email account of mine and it worked.

As of the 14th of January, Hotmail POP3 is available free in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands with more countries to come soon. The Windows Live blog specifically mentions using this on the iPhone.

But I still recommend migrating to Gmail sooner than later...much better features now instead of "sometime in the future"

Wahoo Awesome it works - its just downloading over 1200  messages from the server aarrgghhh

Thanks for all the peeps in the thread :D

I've also been thinking of checking gmail out too!! last time I tried a good few months ago - they wanted loads of details including inside leg measurement:eek: maybe things are better now

For those that are getting an error when setting up their hotmail information

1. You enter your name as entered in your Hotmail account, i.e., when you log into Hotmail it says Hi <Name>.

2. Make sure to leave the description field unchanged it should be something like email@hotmail.com. After the account information is retrieved you can then go back and change the description to whatever you want.

Just tried this in two iPhones and it works. Weird thing is that if I omit step two above I get a message saying password not recognized.

Hope this helps.

i tired everything from writing the right name that shows in hi..... and changed the usa to uk and still doesnot work
:(

Does this also work with mail or thunderbird?

Has anyone got hotmail working in mail or thunderbird with the pop3 servic? I got thunderbird to download my messages but I couldn't send a message. Then when I checked it in my hotmail online and all my messages where gone. Does anyone know how to stop them from being deleted and how to get it send a email ? Cheers

changed my locations to UK (home and work) and it works.
Thanks for the info everyone!!

Yay! It's working in the US now!!! I've being trying for a month and it finally works now! No need to change the country!
