I just think anything with the title "The Official Android Thread" or something similar is an open invitation for the trolls to just bash, because they'll think since their "OMG Android sux0rz" post is Android related, that it's fine for the forum/thread.

Why not just have a catch-all forum where anything goes as far as topics on products/services? I don't think you would need a particularly named forum.

I'm for a seperate board where issues or suggestions on competing products can be discusses without pissing off the locals.

I'm more than willing to help users of platforms I have experience with be it Android, iPhone or Symbian. :p

There are plenty of iPhone vs x discussions that could be had legitamately in the iPhone forums but it isn't really the place to ask for support for rival devices in my eyes.

I agree.
Its kinda like walking into a Burger king joint and bringing a bunch of Mcdonalds food :D
And then sitting down eating it there and asking them for napkins, utensils and ketchup.
Lol

this has my vote to.

Another vote to offload the android threads to somewhere else

While I'm an android proponent, its getting tiring to see see all of the android threads in the iphone forum.

Lets get them moved to a specific android subforum or merge them all into one like the hackintosh thread.

How about asking how to use competing products?

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/914886/

It's getting where you might as well change the title of the iPhone forums to Smartphone forums.

That's just trolling. It's like me going to an Android forum and asking how to use an iPhone. (Looks like the thread is deleted).

Move the to WASTELAND or Flame Bait section, perhaps?

Move the to WASTELAND or Flame Bait section, perhaps?

Why? Usually the reason Android threads become wastelanded or flame bait is because the iPhone fanboys come in and go "OMG android is teh suck lolz!!!!" and the thread goes downhill from there.

At first, I was against the idea of an Android forum because I thought just the very title "Android/Pre/Etc" would be an open invitation for the fanboy trolls to start ****, as they do in every thread about Android, but I'd be open to the idea if the mods could keep a close eye on it. There are a couple members who seem to ruin every single Android related thread. I'm not naming names, but they know who they are, you probably know who they are, and I'm sure the mods know who they are.

And before anyone says "Well, this is an Apple forum, go somewhere else if you want to discuss Android", look at all the Windows related threads. There are many knowledgable people here when it comes to Android, and it would be nice to ask those people questions or discuss the OS without someone else throwing in their 2 cents about why Android is this or that or why the iPhone is better or whatever. And, if this is an Apple forum, what's the point of Community Discussion? Why have threads asking for advice on cars, relationships, sports, TV shows, travel, etc, if this is an Apple forum? I think it can remain an Apple-centric forum and still have discussions on other topics, including Apple's competitors.

Windows RUN on Apple products.

Most Android threads are:
- XYZ is iPhone killer
- iPhone is dead / etc
- Claims to get a XYZ because it does somethings better on paper (seriously, if everyone of those Palm Pre, Nexus One, etc threads are real, they would have sold much more).

There are very rarely any threads asking: how to sync my Android to my Mac, etc.

I already posted my "stats" on this above, but I agree with this... when I did that search a few days ago, there was only one thread amongst all the threads I found that fell into this category. If anything, there are far less threads on this topic now than there were four years ago, when none of us were using Apple phones and there was all kinds of discussion on how to get various Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, etc, phones to share contacts or work over Bluetooth with MacOS.

I don't think we need an Android specific forum per se. I bet that the same thing that is going on with Android posts happens all over again when Windows Phone 7 arrives (people posting specs, why it's better and asking for advice).

What then? A Windows Phone 7 forum? :p Things will get out of hand fast with sub boards added for every other smartphone (WebOS, WP7, WinMo, Android, Symbian, Blackberry OS, Maemo....) :p I'd like to keep the forums mainly Mac centric if you ask me

That's why I'd suggest an "other smartphones on your Mac" type forum of for support and advice for those of us that use non Apple smartphones.

That should keep the trolls separate and stop the barrage of Android posts in the iPhone forum. If someone wants to go into the iPhone or "other smartphones" forum to troll it will stick out like a sore thumb. At the moment all we have is "Well, there is no where else to post it" as an excuse for some real flaimbait threads.

Even before BootCamp, hell, even before Apple even announced the switch to Intel, there were Windows help threads.

No, most threads start out as "ABC company has announced XYZ phone, here are the specs and features, blah blah blah" and then it turns into that once someone posts "OMG wow thats a piece of fail!!! The iPhone is sooo much better!"

There are very rarely any threads asking: how to sync my Android to my Mac, etc.
I'd say there are 2 reasons for that:
1) There is no clear place to put those posts so they're not sure if they're allowed
2) They see the hostile environment towards Android created by the usual Apple fanboys and don't bother, because they don't want their thread to be overrun with trolls telling them that their phone is a piece of crap and they should've bought an iPhone.

When I say Android, I mean all other OSes, I just got lazy and didn't feel like typing out Android/Pre/WinMo7/BlackBerry, etc ;) I think one forum for all alternative OSes would work.

I don't disagree with most of your points (and other advocacy of a "Mac Competitor" forum), but I don't think creating such a forum will solve this problem. It might just make it easier for the trolls to focus their...trolling.

Totally agree with this. I think the "Other smartphones on your Mac" forum is a really good idea.

(It's good to know you want some Android/Pre/WinMo7/BlackBerry love too.) :D:p

Which is why I think the mods would need to keep a close eye on it and take appropriate actions against members who troll, and like I said, I can only think of two or three members off the top of my head who could be troublesome in that forum, I imagine they could be dealt with easily if they want to be **** disturbers.

+1

I don't want the mac forums to become tech forums in general..

I still don't really see how it solves any problems. Just because a forum exists doesn't mean people post in the right place. Flaming in a thread started in the "wrong" forum is still going to happen, and it can be argued that this creates more work on the mods who are seemingly stretched fairly thin at the moment.

I actually think most posts are blog posts, at least they have been lately. If they were the kind you described, I wouldn't have as much of a problem with them (although I still don't think they belong in the iPhone Forum, however, I could live with it). It's the blog posts telling us they're leaving for such and such phone. Nothing is described; nothing is compared. It's mostly trolling, since they invariably say how much the iPhone or AT&T sucked, and THEN you get the iPhone/Apple fanboys, if you want call them that. However, it's the HTC, Evo, Android, whatever fanboys who get this flame war going in the first place. That's my take on it, which is why I made this thread in the first place.

BTW, you might not be noticing these posts as much, since it seems the mods are merging them now, which is great, IMO. It's better than nothing.

Is it? The mod team is the final arbiter on what stays put, what gets thrown in the general refuse pile (Apple Industry) and what gets incinerated (Wasteland). If the mods are unclear about what goes where, perhaps that's something that should be discussed amongst yourselves so there's internal consistency at the least.

(Not calling anyone out, but if the mod team is unsure of the policy then how are we supposed to know any better?)

To be honest even as member here for 5 years I wouldn't have thought to put smartphone questions in that forum. In fact, I've never thought of asking non-iPhone questions on here. If there were an obvious space available, such as a "Smartphones on the Mac" forum, it may generate some traffic and keep other areas more clean. I know the forums have been reshuffled recently but I hope that idea is given a little consideration. I think it's a good one.
