The sad part is people voted for it because they didn’t really believe he would do what he said during his campaign. They thought it would be just a rerun of his previous term, but they didn’t count on there not being any adults in the room like the last time.
What amazes me the most is how people have to always explain what Trump just said. "That's not what he meant", or "What he means is..". "You don't understand what he's saying....".
🤣
And then they hired him again...

Right now companies have committed to almost 7 trillion in investments into the country. I'll say this again... they WANT to be here and now Trump is making that a reality for them.
They committed the last time he was POTUS. They committed again with plans they already had in place. Just "re-announced" when he won. What happened in the first time with Foxconn? Softbank? Carrier? John deer?
What happened to NAFTA 2.0? USMXCA? He just broke that deal, then the other companies all moved their business to where it was cheaper.... Or didn't spend as much as they promised.

This man lies... Lies lies lies like a rug.

Apple already committed to making more in this country under Biden. Same for TSCM. In a year and a half (if we all live that long...) Congress will be flipped and he'll have no clothes.

Only using them as an example because they were one of the first countries to start negotiated tariffs.
The problem is that American made products are simply more expensive than products made in Vietnam or China or India, etc. Tariffs won’t solve that problem. Even with zero tariffs American products would still be more expensive because of higher wages and better employment benefits in the US.

Yeah, I will never understand people will do extreme mental gymnastics to defend that man. I try not to be political but this tyrant is now impacting my hobbies in gaming and tech with his dumb tariffs and it just can't help but get angry at folks that put him back in office again.

I was planning to upgrade my iPhone this year (on a 15 pro max) but if it's going to be $2,300 I can't afford that. Same with the Nintendo Switch 2 and them delaying the pre orders due to tariffs in the U.S. First time in my life I wish I could NOT be an American for the next couple of years.

Just take a deep breath and… relax.
Trump always ends up right in the end.
Don’t let the left drown you in anxiety.
Patience….
Like he was right on COVID? Take some bleach and UV light inside the body... You'll be fine! It will go away in the spring, summer, sometime!!!
Like he was right on owning a casino, or liquor, or steaks, or a school? Stop me when I run out of so much right he has done.
Well he got golf courses right, since he's at one most of the time.

Bla-bla-bla, Did you know Apple is investing 500 Billion USD in Houston, which will put at least 20,000 people to work, I didn't think so.

It's you haven't read Apple's announcement carefully.
  • 500 billion USD will be spread across Michigan, Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, Iowa, Oregon, North Carolina, and Washington
  • Some of it will go into an already existing manufacturing fund Apple set up some years ago
  • It includes R&D for Apple silicon and AI which Apple would have done without this announcement
  • The factory in Houston will not be an Apple factory but run by a partner. It will only produce low volume servers used in data centers and not sold to customers.
  • The $500 billion includes production costs for TV series for Apple TV :)
  • It includes investment in datacenters for Apple Intelligence which Apple have would have needed to do anyway
  • The 20,000 new employees also includes Apple stores which have a big churn. Apple said it will also include technical people but a lot of these people they would have had to hire anyway.
  • The factory in Houston will create thousands of jobs, but they aren't necessarily Apple employees

They don't want to be there. They want to sell to American companies and consumers. The only reasons they want to be there now, is because of tariffs it might be the only feasible way to sell their products.

It just tell that the US can't compete with China, EU and other countries.

I'd recommend taking a flight to anywhere in Asia and pick it up there. But, I can't recommend flying these days... 😕
FWIW it may not be "as" expensive, but it will be more. :(

Only using them as an example, here is the source I used for my post.

Vietnam's Tariffs Offer Rejected by Trump Adviser
This is how manipulative media can be. The article doesn’t state that Vietnam’s tariffs are 90 percent. They state that Trumps administration “calculated Vietnam's tariffs on U.S. imports to be 90 percent.”. But doesn’t proceed to inform you that that calculation is wrong. The trade deficit is 90 percent, not the tariffs.

Whether you are a Trump supporter or not, it is key to understanding this discussion that you understand the difference between those two things.

(To be clear: The following is using the royal “you”, it is in agreement with the poster I am quoting)
Besides Apple, what from the U.S. should I be ?interested in?
I think the better question is, if Americans what to be “America first”, why should any other country not be “My country first”? That is not how you encourage trade, that is how you kill trade.

Even if US does have something I want, I will now go out of my way to look for alternatives, and I might even accept a worse product. I’ll even actively choose a Chinese one before an American. And I’m not alone. You can go “America first” all you want, the result is the rest of the world goes “America last”. And do you know which economy is bigger and more important than the US? The rest of the world.

And yes, I have cancelled my Apple Music subscription and replaced it with Qobuz, although I will admit that I didn’t go as far as cancelling iCloud.

Why can't the Americans make their 'own' products? It must be the matter of quality... ;)

I dropped AppleOne, but kept Apple Music, and iCloud+. I like how Apple products work, there's nothing that I could comfortably replace them with. Even the uncomfortable replacements are too American. Now I'm checking the main brands in my grocery shopping to make sure they're not U.S. owned.

I just read this on another forum and thought it tells you what a wild goose chase Trump is on.

In the 60s, US manufacturing was around 30% of the workforce. Now it’s about 10%. If you flattened the whole US trade deficit in goods to zero, manufacturing jobs would rise back to … 12%. Losing manufacturing jobs has little to do with the trade deficit. It’s 90% about automation and productivity increases.

Gurman is a fool if he thinks this:

Gurman believes Apple will pursue a combined strategy to mitigate these impacts. First, he says the company will likely pressure its component suppliers and manufacturing partners to reduce prices. Second, Apple may absorb a portion of the increased costs, eating into its typical hardware profit margin of around 45%.

Suppliers are not going to take a loss by reducing their prices and Apple is not going to take a loss on their profits. Apple knows their customers are gullible in accepting prices increases. why? Remember not so long ago the time of the world wide memory shortage which caused prices to increase? Apple increased their prices because of it and yet customers accepted the price increase by still buying the affected products.

Every time there has been something in the world that has gone on to affect prices, wars, natural disasters (earth quakes, floods), lack of raw materials, Apple has always raised the prices of their products and Apple customers continued to buy Apple products. The tariff war will be no different. Apple will raise prices and their customers will still buy.

My guess is they won't change much at the top end, those prices are probably already as high as the market can bear. They are also the devices with the highest margins so are less impacted by the tariffs. What's more interesting is what happens at the bottom end. Can they keep the price of the 16e low, they might see that product as a loss leader and vehicle to sell more services.

People suggesting the suppliers share the load have no idea how slim margins are on the production side, especially for something at the volume of Apple. They will struggle enough to keep the unit price where it is, because no matter what the volume will go down. I have been quoted manufacturing margins lower than ten percent for similarly priced products by the thousand. Imagine what the margin is when the volume is tens of millions.

I was using Vietnam as an example of tariff negotiations, the numbers are not relevant to my point.
