Apple Vision Pro is a standalone hardware device that has its own processors and does not require a connection to a Mac or an iPhone to operate, but it is able to interface with other Apple devices. With the Mac, for example, the Vision Pro can serve as a Mac display.

Apple says that there's a Mac Virtual Display feature that works wirelessly with the Mac. You can bring your Mac's display into Vision Pro and "place it anywhere in space." You can see each of your Mac apps individually, arranging them in a way that works for you.

According to Apple, the Vision Pro is meant to serve as a "private, portable 4K display" when used with a Mac. Connecting is as simple as looking at a compatible Mac while wearing the Apple Vision headset.

You can connect Mac accessories to the Vision Pro, including the Magic Keyboard and the Magic Trackpad for input purposes. Attaching Bluetooth accessories allows for a typical Mac workflow to continue to be used, with the display replaced by Vision Pro.

Vision Pro is set to launch in early 2024, so we won't know more about how it functions as an actual Mac display replacement until closer to that date. The headset is priced starting at $3,499.

This is gonna be the most sold-out thing ever. Probably a year long waitlist.

I'm anti-VR and even I'm thinking about getting it, if it works with the Mac like this. It's not enough for me to already be working in bed with a laptop under work-from-home - I also want to be able to work while just lying back half asleep.

I'll pay top dollar for anything that'll let me be just a little bit lazier.

Latency becomes the question. They have Final Cut pictured above so possibly they have some magic worked out. My Quest Pro already allows 3 Macbook monitors with much less robust hardware so I am sure Apple will have a multi monitor soluition for this as well. With M2 and R1 all current apps should be possible native. That will be outstanding! I would order them for our whole team right now if they would let me.

As I understand it, this is effectively just a screen share. What would be very powerful is the ability to create multiple desktops on the Mac and left each into VisionPro. My Mac would then effectively be able to access enormous screen area, rather than one copy of its screen, albeit a large scale version.
Too much bandwidth for wireless. I think they could have allowed the mac to project multiple low quality display streams, but only the one you focus at is at 4k.

Even it was just for a part of a work day, I can see this offering a great option for ergonomics. The abilty to relax in a chair with your head at any angle that's comfortable could bring some relief to an otherwise static posture. We all know looking down at a laptop is not good on the neck.

That would be the ideal solution for this platform, but how long would it take to have the most used apps native on visionOS?
I don't think much developers will adopt it early and they will chose to wait to see how it goes mainstream so that it's worth their investment. Unless Apple have made it very easy to port iOS/macOS apps to it.

I'm hoping for a virtual mouse/keyboard setup so you don't need to physically need them around.

During the Keynote, I could swear there was a virtual keyboard in one of the views. As for the mouse, would it create a virtual mouse, and when it detects your hand covering it, any movement of your hand would translate to mouse movements? Open your hand wide (fingers spread) would disconnect you from that interface? Developers are gonna have fun with this new platform!

I've been reviewing the Quest 3, but still don't get it. Does it already offer the same immersive experience that the Vision Pro offers, with "screens" floating in space? How well does that work? How do the Macs broadcast their screens?

This sort of behavior makes the implementation of stage manager make a lot more sense.

Swapping between window clusters in a spatial environment in a layout similar to stage manager seems pretty intuitive.

I wonder if this is going to work with Macs that contain Intel Chip.
I bet not probably needs apple silicon like all the latest OS updates do in order to use all features for example Sonoma works for all features to work. But more and more I can see one day I will want one of these @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️ I do a lot of stuff on ipad on couch, kitchen table. But being able to bring the software and my macbook up in a nice large virtual window anywhere in house without moving macbook would be awesome. Did I tell you that I want one now LOLo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O🙃🙃🙃🙃:cool::cool: help….. I am being drawn in LOL

When using it with your mac, can you use the mac keyboard and track pad? Or is it only for the wireless keyboard and magic mouse?

You can do that with a monitor on a VESA monitor arm. I did that when I broke my leg and couldn't sit up for long. Typing is a bit difficult though when lying down, the headset won't change that.
