Do you know this for sure? It's the black viewing angles that are the biggest change with the 2012 iMacs, so I find it hard to believe that these are the same panels. Maybe it's the fused displays causing the issue, but something has definitely changed with the 2012 iMacs. I don't have any backlight bleed - just the viewing-angle anomalies that everyone else has.

Interesting.. I haven't spent much time with the prior generation imac, but it does seem like the viewing angle anomaly seems to be the norm here. It's a bit disappointing. I have one bad area of backlight bleeding on my screen that doesn't go away at any angle. The corners, however, do exhibit viewing angle issues, especially at close distances. But they definitely go away as you look at the corners dead on.

They are the exact same panels lol. I will have to dig up the article for you. You just got one of the better panels last time, as you can see by these forums the quality varies, some people have perfect panels where some have yellow tint and backlight bleed issues....

edry.hilario, I think the problem is that your first panel was so good to you, that it will be hard to accept anything less. I do feel for you, truly. But you'll get a good one in the end. :)

hopefully. If the replacent i just got didnt have the two super noticeable left side hot spots (light bleeding) i wouldnt have mind about the rest but it is really really noticeable not in just in black color but in dark shaded colors, its really really annoying. UGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

So no issues whatsoever with the fan noise?

My replacement is on its way, and I'm nervous whether I'll get a perfect machine.

no fan issues on the new one, but it has the crappiest screen ive ever seen i think, which might be worse than the fan noise. good luck with your replacement . i just got a new order for another replacement lets see what issues that machine will have.

I doubt the viewing-angle characteristics are panel variance, and I still think something funky is going on with these panels. By shrinking the components or fusing the glass to the display, the viewing angles have definitely suffered! I don't notice it one bit except on black backgrounds/dark scenes, but it was definitely a tad bothersome when I was playing The Walking Dead during the darker sequences.

so william hows your imac? is it perfect?

No such thing as perfect. Compared to my 2009 i7 27", my 2012 i7 27" is quieter, cooler, has inferior viewing angles and slightly warmer color toward the bottom of the display. The speakers are also not great, but we knew that. :)

I'm content with it, though. It's a powerful machine that's for sure.

I'm so pissed because you don't even know if the replaceent were getting is even good. Like I said I'm gonna be getting a third iMac I have a strong feeling it won't be the last one.

Take the old and new ones to an Apple store and ask them to put the old panel on your new mac. Problem solved :p.

If it meant you didn't have to have another replacement, I'm sure they would. They'll do anything to help a customer out (speak to the store manager, or customer relations on the phone).

i did they wouldnt have it. they said its policy they cant swap parts between machines when they put something it needs to be new.. i guess thats how the guarantee the replacement. plus in order for me to get my new replacement in i had to ship in the first imac i got and ive already done so... lets just hope for the best i guess.

OK here to deposit my 2 cents on this matter, from my experience with lcd panels in general leading up to LED and IPS its best to not hold any panel while moving or transporting it along the edges if that is possible, of course there is no way to know how your computer was handled at the factory so all you can do is handle it with care when you receive it, I say this because when transporting my Samsung TV from my old place to my new one I noticed it had a new backlight bleed in the exact same spot I had my hand while moving it into place and handling it...

so I would recommend anyone who wants to, to unbox your iMac with care, thanks to the new box this is not a problem, and then holding and carrying the mac by grabbing it at the stand and being very careful, it just might reduce the chance you get these nasty backlight bleeds, maybe even place the box on the desk so you don't have to move it far

edry.hilario: what was your return process like? mine has been a bit confusing. Apple is telling me I need to ship back my old computer sometime after the new computer is shipped out to me. I thought that I'd be able to hang on to the old one so that I could do a side by side comparison. Also bummed that there's going to be a few days I won't have a computer. What have your returns been like?

I know exactly what your talking about i was confused so i called my rep. the rep i talked to said that you have 1 week AFTER the machine has arrive to your house to send the old one back. she said that the system its a bit automated and you shouldnt be charged, that is unless you fail to send the other one. So dont pay attention to it, as you also would get warnings if something is about to happen. Also the time counts from the moment you drop it off to usps or your carrier, its not one week you have for them to received the machine is one week you have to drop it off at your local usps.

Another proof is that we or they dont know when the replacements will be shipped out to us it could be super late or early so for them to put a date on it doesn't make sense.. so i advice you to keep your machine till the new one arrives, i shipped my first one yesterday sent a copy of the receipt to my rep and in the apple website says "return pending" i asked her about it and she said not to worry its just the system is automated and its assuming these machines are in stock. so this is how my return process was.. however i do advice you to assure this 100% by calling them.

Looks pretty normal to me for this sort of IPS panel with max backlight (I'm guessing). I wouldn't bother getting a replacement.

Black viewing angles are just poor on this new iMac, and that's just the way it is. Turn your backlight up, and move left and right in front of your screen when it's black. You'll see the bleed disappear when it's directly in front of you. Shame. My 2009 27" iMac was leagues better in this regard.

Should i also keep this https://www.dropbox.com/s/7kdluy7w4w6pdwc/Photo%20Jan%2003%2C%204%2019%2051%20PM.jpg you tell me sir, ran more fraking test... guess what i found people.. wicked bad image retention! beside this panel having such bad lighting issues this panel also has really bad image retention this crap guys this is crap!!!!!!

request another unit. As a seasoned technician, what I see is apparent stage lighting, causing portions of the panel to not light uniformly. Most likely when this LCD was installed, the technician may have cracked an or broken one of the 6 inductors responsible for backlight. They may have also damaged the lvds cable/connector. Either way, if you bought it new this is crap

yeah it also has image retention ! this is really messed up apple needs to pull it together i dont care if its a first gen machine, this is just messed up.

do we know if this problem is only on the 27" iMac or the 21.5" has it too? i didn't see anybody with the 21" commented on display issues..

My 2011 iMac exhibits minor black light bleeding a two edge locations, but unless I am watching a movie with very dark scene it's a non issue. I mainly work under light background so it doesn't bother me at all.

I guess you were one the lucky ones

No. You were just one of the unlucky ones. Don't forget how many of these Apple is shipping every day. The people who have bad ones complain on the messageboards. The satisfied aren't going to come here, and most Apple users never come here.

Yeah I know what you mean. What are the odds with me though two faulty machines ugh. Let tell you about this whole thing for me quick, I waited almost a whole year for the iMacs to be announced (never again!) then they get announce but they are not shipping right away and the version I want actually is going to take even longer, fffffffuuu. Ok I got over that and waited now I finally get a machine.... It's faulty I have to send the back for a replacement, now I get the replacement and its faulty too, it's like WTF how unlucky with these things can I get. I'm so frustrated at this point

Update!
