These threads show up around this time every year. No one knows how Apple is going to price these phones, so that is all speculation. Also, no one knows what new features have not been leaked, both hardware and software-wise.

Once we have actual information from Apple, then we can judge if the new phones are worth the upgrade.

I was going to skip the 11 Pro Max, but the bigger battery and better camera system were worth the upgrade to me. Feel like I have gotten my money's worth on that one. YMMV.

I had the 6s+ and 11 Pro Max was worth it for OLED and the great battery.

What is Apple adding to justify an increase? I know some will say camera and 5G, but 5G is sporadic and the cameras were top notch last year.

Apple missed the boat on-
Massive notch reduction or finger print hole or Touch ID inside phone
120 HZ

For an 11 Pro Max owner, it is a no thanks for me.

Oh? When did Apple release pricing for the new phones? Or are you just ranting about something going on in your head?

Last rumor that I heard is that prices will remain the same for the Pro models and decrease for the others.

I think this needs to be repeated again.

Every new iPhone release is not targeted towards the previous gen users like yourself. It's targeted towards those using 2 years or older devices. The improvements of course will be incremental. Technology and manufacturing are not magic.

Meanwhile Samsung says hold my 🍺 Note 20 6.9" LTPO variable refresh 120hz 1440p OLED, 4500mh big battery, 5x optical zoom, 5g, etc etc.

YES it is $1299. If Apple stuffed that in would I pay another $100 to $1200-1250 for a Max? Yes. Drop in the bucket over time. Pro specs pro price.

But paying $1099-1150 (whichever rumors you want to believe or not) for run of the middle hardware, no way. Sure a great processor- it can geekbench over a laptop. And? iOs cant even multitask to use that horsepower.

If you're going by this picture, they did add something. They added 64GB of memory to the base models. The bigger storage models are still the same price as last year. (If any of this turns out to be actually true.)

64gb costs $50 more, and that's an acceptable answer? 🙃 You're talking MAYBE a few dollars extra at the bulk cost. How nice of Apple to charge $50 more starting price to get a reasonable amount of storage! Even $350 devices ship with 128gb these days

Considering they ake 66% of the smartphone profits and the BOM (bill of materials) on 512gb Pr Max is $490 (yes I get BOM isnt the only cost, but cmon) that they sell for $1450.

That's skill when you twist overcharging as a gift.

The short answer is because some people are more than willing to pay it. The iPhone X/XS 64GB was £999 and last year the 11 Pro 64GB was £1049. The trend suggests the iPhone 12 Pro 64GB could be £1099. Those £50 increments just keep being slipped in.

I’m glad I’m more than happy with the mid tier devices. All the important features and at a price I think reflects the value well. If you want a Pro device (whatever that means) then pay the premium.

I don’t know the answer to this but do Samsung and all the other big Android makers have iCloud style services? I don’t pay upfront for iPhone storage simply because my data is backed up on iCloud, Dropbox and Google Drive.

Apple have always charged my for physical storage because they have a service that is one of the cheapest around and convenient to use. Keeps the phone from getting bogged down too.

120Hz only in 1080p mode.
Look at what Samsung needs to cut on the Note 20. All manufacturers have their ways of trying to squeeze more margins.

Sure they do. Google One https://www.theverge.com/21350015/google-one-backup-android-phone-how-to And 15gb free not a paltry 5gb too. 100gb is $199 and 200gb is $2.99; same pricing.

I have one iphone, one Apple device, and Im using 3.7gb just on a backup (very few icloud files) Phptos are a whopping 185mb and Drive 144mb. So 325mb total basically. So backup alone at 3.4gb is nearly 70% of the free storage.

Its far far too little; even if all you do is backup. More penny-pinching.

Paying for cloud storage isnt a great rebuttal though. Some stuff you cannot use icloud for like media- sure if you pay for an unlimited data plan but then were getting into more overall cost. It doesnt replace physical storage.

Its like BMW selling the car and then selling you a monthly subscription to use Carplay; that costs nothing to pennies to them. Theyre getting you on both ends. Apple is giving you less physical storage and less free cloud to get you to pay them monthly.

It’s down to preference. I’d rather have cloud storage than physical storage which is why I get the 64GB model iPhones rather than the 128GB and so forth. There is no right answer, it’s personal preference.

I’m confused. So the iPhone 12 pro and Pro Max are the premium models and not the 12 Max?

Luckily there are MacBook Air, entry level iPad and iPhone SE for those shopping with less money in their pockets. On the other hand, Apple was never cheap and it’s not realistic to expect that to change.
Yeah they do have more budget oriented devices and the MacBook Air I don’t mind about because it’s still more computer than I’d ever need.

I will continue to buy the iPhone Pro , iPad Pro Etc but it’s annoying to have to pay so much. You can get a lot more for your money on android. People that are willing to spend upwards of £800 shouldn’t have to settle for a budget phone.

Don’t say Android. For the love of all that matters!! Lol. It’s only Samsung and Apple that matter just limit it to those two.

if you want to upgrade every year and see potential improvements in performance then Iphone is not for you.
2020 iphone models will be a huge leap for xs /xs max/ xr or earlier phones but not much for 11 series users.

Unless going from a 11 pro to a 12 pro max.

As far as price goes, Apple will know exactly how much to charge for the new up grade models. I'm sure Apple has this all planned for this year and the next and the next. They just don't decide up grades and pricing at the last minute. All plan years ahead.

I think people also overlook the fact upgrade volumes have been falling since 2015 with less people upgrading year on year. This isn’t just for Apple customers but across the industry. A lot of this is down to phones being kept longer due how good phones are long term and also as prices have creeped up. Apple is perhaps charging more to compensate for this in many ways along with other manufacturers.

They also realise within the user base there is a majority who also don’t buy their Pro devices which is why mid tier phones sell so well. I think those who are willing to pay £1k+ for a device because they want the very best features are now in a situation where Apple and the like are testing to see just how much consumers are willing to pay. It’s already obscene in my view but I think there is enough demand for this price to keep creeping up.

I don’t think anybody buying an upper tier iPhone is getting a budget phone. People don’t buy because they have to but because they see a value on the offering.

I'm confused by your confusion. The premium models are the same as 2019 phones, the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.(6.1" and 6.7")

There are no phones that have been named 12 Max (yet). There will be a 5.4" and a 6.1" regular iPhone 12.

Not saying it's acceptable. It is in line with what Apple charges for storage upgrades. OPs thread title is " How can Apple increase the price of the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max without adding anything?" If these prices hold to be true, they added 64GB to the base storage and raised the price $50. The other storage sizes prices go unchanged. Therefore, it would seem, that Apple didn't increase the price without adding anything.
