They should have had it where you just place your finger over it can't stand clicking that damn home button

If they did it like that, the fingerprint sensor would try to "read" fingerprints anytime anything brushed against the home button, which I imagine could quickly run down the battery.

You do realize that's going to drain a lot of battery if the home button is constantly scanning for input. Those fingerprint scanners at government buildings get to constantly scan because they're always attached to a power source if thats what you're thinking about..

hellooo..! they are saving it for the ipad5s! it's also another way to get people to upgrade and buy the gotta have feature. don't you know how apple suckers their customers yet?

What you consider ridiculous or not. Thank you for the information :)

Clever planning is releasing a product when demand is high, if possible. Like now. A lot of people want the TouchID, me included.

It's NOT waiting a year, until Christmas 2014, to cash in. That's kind of ridiculous, really. A month or two, maybe, but a year? If we don't get it now, it's because of logistics, supply, and manufacturing capacity. By next year Google, Samsung, and all the others will have similar technology, and Apple knows that.

But feel free to think that Apple is trying to save business for next year, and sacrifice the bottom line this year.

Maybe the new iPad's will have Touch ID and that why the iPhone 5s has had supply issues as they have been using them in both products?

correct me if im wrong but i thought that you don't need to click the home button. I thought that was the whole point to have the circle around it as its conducitve and registers that a finger is present. Can someone confirm that, please?

I use it on my iPhone (only because it is easy). I will never use it on my iPad, since I use the smartcover instant-on feature. A waste of space, weight and or my time.

Waste of time sure, I use the SmartCover on as well, but I wonder how having Touch ID is a waster of space and weight even if you don't use it. Its not like you would get a noticeable decrease in weight or increase of battery life without it.

so you don't lock your iPad?

I never have. Don't see the need. And doing so would negate the auto-on feature, which is one of my favourite things about the iPad.

I doubt it really adds any weight or mass, in reality, but even a milli-whatever would be more than it would be worth. To me, obviously.

Since most of us rarely even take our iPads out of the house (at least I rarely see them in public), while phones go everywhere we go, the need for extra security features aren't the same.

I doubt I would use touch id much if at all in its current state but who knows what future applications it could have. Not to mention I think it looks much nicer than the old home button.

So I'm really hoping the iPad 5 has it as I won't be upgrading again for a few years.

I think its more a case of if the Mini 2 doesn't have the proper A7 chip, it won't get Touch ID.

The Mini will have the same A7 as the 5S. The iPad 5 will have the A7X. IMO, strictly supply chain based on Touch ID.

I think it will be more interesting to see if both receive the M7, and if they have the same Bosch Gyros or a new supplier. ;)

The iPad still made more money than Microsoft for a year after the 4S with Siri came out.

I think people are grossly overestimating how much of a game changer touch ID is....

They may not add the Touch ID due to manufacturing issues like price/shortage as well as from a marketing stance that this could be cannibalizing a product lineup per se.

Although, this feature will be in every iOS device one day... since it's such a convenient feature, the roll out, may be slower than expected for the market. Or Apple, could slow play it indeed.

Especially, since Apple pioneers the market and no one is close after Apple's transaction of Authentec last summer. Apple would be smart to do a slow release on this from a manufacturing & marketing stance, but I don't see Apple backing away or shying away from this great feature in the new iPad(s).

It will be in the new iPad... maybe not the mini, but I wouldn't doubt they put Touch ID in both, and definitely in high-end iPad.

I still wonder if the iPad mini will get 128GB option... I think no, due to product differentiation which is similar conceptual to the Touch ID debate. But, too many consumers want the Touch ID... way too many.

I have no idea what the point of the conductive circle is, but I have the iPhone 5S, and you definitely have to click first -- or rather, the phone has to be awake to sense your finger. If the phone is already awake, there is no need to click. So for instance, when you make an iTunes purchase, a popup window appears asking you to confirm your purchase with your fingerprint, and you simply place your finger over the home button without clicking, and it scans your finger.

This sucks hell why don't they push the release back a few weeks if they have to? They probably want to just keep it as an iPhone 5s exclusive so as to be a selling point for it.

There's this little thing called Christmas that can't be pushed back a few weeks. :D

This rumor on cnet says the mini will have touch id but no retina screen, now that would be disappointing.

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/ipad...nner-50012547/

It would be an odd combination, as well. I think the WSJ is more reliable than CNet UK, though. Apple might well keep the "old" iPad mini around, or a lightly refreshed version to sell for less than $329.

I think this is entirely possible:

Original iPad mini/iPad mini updated with A6 or A7 - $249
iPad mini with Retina Display - $329

$130 more for LTE versions, and 32GB/64GB versions at the usual $100 and $200 premiums.

Apple might not have foreseen the onslaught of Android tablets with "Retina-quality" displays this past summer, and might have had a more minor refresh in the works, hoping to delay the Retina refresh until 2014, but instead may have pushed it forward, hence the rumors of tight supplies.

The circle is there to activate Touch ID. Otherwise, Touch ID might be constantly reading for a fingerprint, reducing battery life.

I don't see why Touch ID would be an important feature to have. Size and weight reduction and 64bit processor are the two major thing for me. Oh...and maybe hope for cooler surface iPad.

We should hear a rumored leak tonight on wether or not it'll have Touch ID right? There's no way they keep things under wraps when it's being showcased tomorrow at 10:00AM, don't all these things usually leak the night before?

I think well know soon enough.

Not really true. Leaks don't jump up the night before frequently.

I am also thinking touchid and gold color in ipad5s.
