I advise everyone to check out the HP DM3, it has more power than most people in this world need, it has plenty of battery life, and is made of full aluminum. Oh yeah, and it costs $549.
The AMD one is at $549 and it sports the M780G. Though I'd get the Intel one and go for the dedicated GPU.

It's a budget 13" Envy.

Doesn't sound like a Mac to me... odd that.

Freedom of speech only applies against the government, not to private places like MacRumors. You don't have any rights here.

I spoke freely, and I don't see anyone particularly offended by my thread... I'm not looking for "rights", I said I have freedom of speech, which evidently I do, because I have spoken!. This isn't about politics, and I SHALL say and do say what I wish, without causing offence, I hope.

The freedom of speech isn't about speaking freely, it's about the consequences from making such speech. People keep saying "I can say anything I want because of freedom of speech", but they never understood what exactly freedom of speech is and they often misuse it. It has nothing to do with politics or causing offense to people. You can say anything you want, but do not fool yourself that you are protected from your word.

Anyway, that's beside the point.

Your reply is pretty uninformed, also. Windows 7 IS blatently what Vista wanted to be, but wasn't. Microsoft want to forget about Vista, because Win 7 is everything that Vista failed to be. That is a fact. Would you care to go into detail as to how it confuses you?. It is really simple - Windows 7 is Vista++ (or you could forget the "++", as -1 [Vista] plus +1 [Win7] = 0).
Windows 7 has the same kernel as windows vista (with some additions). The OS is actually very much the same. They made a few changes on how it looks and some other refinements to convince people it is a new and better OS. Windows 7 is not what vista intended to be, it is what the users wanted. The operating system has not really changed at all.

What are you talking about, the free upgrade only applies for new machines. Same for Snow Leopard, from the date it was announced, any machines bought after that are eligible for free copies of Snow Leopard but with a 10$ charge for shipping. Many of the free upgrade discs from MS will be charged shipping and handling fee as well. It will vary between manufacturers from free to any type of fee they want to charge.
You are correct that there was a free upgrade for snow leopard as well, but my point was that it doesn't have to cost as much as the OP is saying. Microsoft has similar pricing overall.

It baffles me how PC & Windows users can rant and rave about how Apple is such a ripoff, when they paid out many £100's for Vista... which badly flopped, and now Windows 7 comes out tomorrow, yet again Microsoft seem adamant to fleece the masses, by offering the same stupid scheme of "Home edition", "Premium edition" etc, for over £100 (possibly a LOT more?).

It seems PeeCee users continue to buy Windows at these ridiculous prices, and yet in the next breath, bash Apple products for being over-priced and incompatible.

So... a fix for Vista is the right thing to do, and it has been done... but why are the many millions who suffer/ed Vista, being made to pay out AGAIN, for what Vista SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE FIRST PLACE??.

I don't get it - their products are blatent, if not subtle (sometimes) (bad) copies of Mac OS X implemented features, and yet they screw up daily, and they have the gall to call US stupid?.

This isn't a flame enticer - I am just baffled - do you know anyone about to invest in Windows 7?. Have you considered trying to show them the manifold benefits that Mac offers?.

Those who call fanboy, forget one thing - there is plenty to be a fan, OF.

The "Ultimate" :)D) edition is £229!!

Sickeningly overpriced

Understand this, when you purchase a Mac a part of the high cost is dedicated to the operating system. Remember, Microsoft doesn't make money off of computers.

Vista is a fine operating system, it's just dead from a marketing stand point. Most of vista's bugs have been addressed and any other issues are due to program incompatibilities which IMO is expected when a lot of the software in question was designed to run on operating systems that are 9 years old or more. OS 10.5 and higher don't support the classic environment anymore, so that being said, Windows has a much higher program compatibility rate than Mac.

OS X has just as many problems as Windows. You just hear about PC's more due to a greater market share... It's only natural.

Plenty of people or should I say companies, are investing in Windows 7... do you read the news?

BTW..... If you are a student, you can get Windows 7 upgrade for $30 here.

I have a question for you: Have you even tried Windows 7?

Anyway, Windows just sucks! Vista and 7 are not usable at all. Their usability concept is a nightmare. Changing the IP address in Win7 took me about 15 minutes, because I got lost in endless menus.
)

- "Not usable at all"? Nice man... Can you please go into dept, also taking into account why Windows has 93% market share.

- I would assume there is a learning curve to anything if you haven't done it before. I could change my IP in both Windows and OS X in under a minute.

Look, I'm not saying one is better than the other. I have a Macbook Pro running 10.5 as my main OS. I run XP in VirtualBox and 7 in Boot Camp for the simple fact that neither Mac or PC can take care of my technical needs.

Windows 7 has the same kernel as windows vista (with some additions). The OS is actually very much the same.
What do you expect? A rewrite of the NT kernel is suicidal and would serve Microsoft no useful purpose. The NT kernel gets updated, improved, and becomes more modular at each release of Windows.

Snow Leopard at £25 is an upgrade version. If you want the full version, it costs £129 as part of the "Mac Box Set".
Actually it costs that much because of iLife & iWork combined, unfortunately you can't get it without buying the full thing, so you're not just getting OSX.

Also, you can also pay like 45 for a family pack upgrade of 5, or 180 for a family pack with iLife & iWork. Nothing beats that.

But if he had to change his IP address in order to access the internet... :p

Damn, didn't think of that.
In that case
Log off of windows
boot up in OSX
Log in
The google it,
print or write down the steps
sign off of OSX and reboot into windows and follow the steps.

Ok that could take 15 minutes

Whats wrong!? I was loading up the Windows Installer for Windows 7 and saw this window pop up!??!
Okay, okay I was bored and had Photoshop open ... lol. Got my new copy of Adobe Creative Suite CS4 today from my design college. ^_^

No it isn't. The $29 version (£25 for you) is a single-licence version. You can do whatever the heck you want with it - upgrade or clean install. The EULA says nothing about only being able to perform an upgrade of the OS, it states that it can only be installed on one computer at any time. In fact, flicking through the pamphlet that came with the disc, as well as the box, there's nowhere that states it's merely an upgrade. You're thinking of the $9.95 discs sent out as part of the "up to date" program.

Eidorian: do you by chance own Microsoft stock? Practically all your posts I've seen are promoting or apologizing for Windows.

Yeah, I see... you can't choose the same fonts size, turn of the anti-aliasing etc. A real "modern" designer. Applause!

Anyway, you can buy DSP versions of Windows if you like. These are about 1/3 price of the retail (boxed) version. The downside is, you can install it only on one computer and there it should stay (as it says in the license).

Looks like a cheap knock off of the UMB. I'm not saying that because I dislike HP. I have an HP Slimline similar to this & installed Linux on it. As it's designed to handle the over-bloated & inferior Aero effects, Linux Compiz-fusion looks stunning and runs quite smoothly on it. Just wish I could have gotten it without buying a Windows license which I do not use...

when they paid out many £100's for Vista

I don't know anyone who purchased Vista. The people I know who use it got it with their machine.

It seems PeeCee users continue to buy Windows at these ridiculous prices,

The vast majority of Windows licences come with a machine. They don't actually buy windows

and yet in the next breath, bash Apple products for being over-priced and incompatible.

Most Apple computers are far more than £100 overpriced.

Indeed.

do you know anyone about to invest in Windows 7?. Have you considered trying to show them the manifold benefits that Mac offers?.

Yes. Me. I use both OSX and Win XP daily. OSX laptop. XP workstations. I'll be getting a copy of Win 7 for my home workstation. Our next round of workstations at work will probably be Dell's with Win 7 included.

Sickeningly overpriced

Like Mac hardware.

Have you even tried Win 7? I'm betting no.

I tried a free download beta version installed in virtualbox. I can see how it would impress existing XP & certainly Vista users, but NOT objective, knowledgeable users of OS X SL, Linux and some other recent UNIX variants.

I'm being objective. One 'knowledge' shouldn't have anything to do with the end user experience.

SL and Win7 both do jobs. They both do them fine. They both have problems. They both have good points. Win 7 impresses me, and I've been using OS X for nearly 3 years. Neither OS is 'better'.

Stop treating Apple like a Church. Steve Jobs is not the messiah.

I swear - Apple could laminate a turd, call it the iTurd, sell it for $499 and people here would rejoice.

Because they're not looking at the OS price. They're looking at the package price. They see that the cheapest netbook is $300. They see that the cheapest Macbook is $1000. At best, they notice that the cheapest 13" laptop is slightly more expensive than the netbooks. They don't check any specs beyond that, so they think the Macbook must be over priced. In reality, a Macbook falls within the price range for a computer of its caliber.

Just for clarity - the version of Windows 7 90%+ of people will buy, is currently available for £66.99 inc vat.

Leopard was slightly more than that.

Out of curiosity will this thread stop when OSX 10.7 comes out, or Windows 8?

Personally. I prefer OSX. Yes windows 7 has some very snazzy looking features.. but hay so does my £200 washing machine.. It doesn't mean that its that all the internals are of the best quality though.

PC's will always be able to win on budget /spec because there are 1000's of combinations of parts to make one at any quality and price. And as for them (MS) having a huge market share, I point my finger at bad business strategy from Apple years ago.. but now times have changed and Apple can sell as a quality product... Just like a Miele washing machine... Ooooooo! ;)
