Yep, my concern exactly when I spoke with AppleCare, but I probably never would have had that conversation with the Apple folks, had it not been for my son's girlfriend getting a refurbished iPhone with the same serial number (5K) as my NEW replacement iPhone. I'm hoping they aren't giving refurbs to people that are paying "full-pop" for NEW iPhones.

i have a 5k phone and had 2 of them too. each were a month apart since apple swapped them. i have gone throught 5 iphones and i have to say that the last 2 phones (5k) were better than the ones i had before. battery life, screen, and volume were alot better even better than my first. apple are giving out refurbs as i got one that was very noticably refurbed. (had scratches on the glass) i was about to get another scratched up one but i told the guy it had defects prior to reactivation and happily gave me another that was newer.

I got the information on the 5K serial number and the On Duty Manager said YES, it just so happens that the refurbished iPhones are 5K, but that there are new iPhones assigned with the 5K serial numbers as well. I asked if it is possible that my new iPhone with a 7K serial number was replaced in October of '07 with a 5K refurbished iPhone, and the SM said that in October the 5K serial numbers were new iPhones at that time. I wasn't totally comfortable with the answer. I also had a problem with my dual dock, which would somehow loose the click sound and go mute to any Text Msg, and even the Slide to unlock the iPhone, or it would show that Msg that this device is blah, blah, blah, and I had to press no don't send to Airport Mode, anyway they replaced the dual dock, but I left without the "refurb issue" being answered. I'm headed back to the store on Tuesday to meet with the Store Manager for real. Why do I feel like I was getting the run-around? To be continued!

I hope I didn't get a refurb. My serial starts with 5K810. I swapped out my glitchy iPhone for a new one and got this one.

Hi Guys, Sorry to resurrect this thread.

I had a water damaged 3gs which was replaced by apple bluewater store which I had to pay for £139. I had to hand them my broken phone and they gave me replacement phone but no box. The SN on the paperwork starts 85931 but I havent switched the phone on to check what the phone actually says. will this serial No on the paperwork or is there a good possibility the SN will start 5K (Indicating a refurb) on the phone itself.

I phoned the store and a 'genius' (Ahem) told me that the phone was new unused but they dont get them in an original box anymore (As its a 3GS - Not the current phone). Was he just blatantly lying to me? He took the phone out of a blank black box and gave it to me.

I dont want to plug it in as I intend on selling it (New, unused) as I have in the mean time purchased a new phone.
