I'm very confident about a redesign, mostly because of Apple's new Photo Stream iPhone icon. It's just a little hint, but it's from Apple and directed at nuts like us.

Also, and I don't know if this had been brought up before, doesn't the whole discussion about the redesign (larger screen, longer home button etc.) remind you of this alleged iPhone (4?) mockup from a few months ago?

That's not from a few months ago... more like a few years ago. But I've always loved that.

I'm certainly not calling you a liar but that is a issue I've haven't seen on once on one of my 28 android phones that I have owned.. That is odd to say the least.

As I Reported earlier about the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch overheating.....

Reports are starting to come in about the same exact thing....

http://androidcommunity.com/is-your-epic-4g-touch-getting-hot-20110921/

I just hope the new iPhone doesn't suffer the same overheating problem.
I think when a product is designed too thin, you are suseptable to heat issues from the screen backlighting, battery, motherboard and CPU and also GPS chips. Its how well the heat dissipation is implemented.

The Samsung is plastic so retains heat more than dissipates heat. The iPhone (from rumors) is made out of aluminum so should dissipate the heat better.

I think that came way before the iPhone 4.

I'd like to say that I am very confident, but with all these back and forth threads and news stories saying there will be a re-design and then there won't be one I just don't know what to believe!

Hasn't it been around since before the iPhone 3G? I have always loved the design as well and it is kinda like the iPhone 4 slightly.

Unfortunately, you are not going to get a very good answer. Anyone who says "yes, there's going to be a big re-design" is just voicing their wishful thinking because, like you, they'll be looking for a new iPhone too. They'll then provide some sort of unprecedented reasoning. Likewise, anyone who says "no re-design" likely is still stuck in their contract and is not in the market for a new iPhone this year, but next year.

75% or so. I'd be shocked and confused at their thought process if they just do the '4S' or whatever.

That would not be a strategic business decision.

Depends on how confident the redesign is in me. Life is all about reciprocity.

Apple has already branded the iPhone 4 as the "biggest step forward since the original iPhone." Don't see them doing that again this year. Not only would it become repetitive, it would also mean Apple would loose the wow factor.

This :)

I think I would have to go with about 35% confident that a redesigned "iPhone 5" will be released in a few weeks. There just is not enough evidence of it and too much pointing to the "iPhone 4s" being the one and only device (A5, etc). I am undecided how I feel about this though. I don't really need a new phone. My iPhone 4 is still serving me great. I have been eligible for an upgrade for months now, but if it is just the 4s, I will probably hold off. If they do surprise us all with a redesigned 5, I will probably get it, but not right away if it has a larger screen. I don't want a huge phone, so I'll have to hold it in my hand before I make a decision.

I think the home button on this mock-up is an epic fail!

Ur statement makes no sense. It's called marketing. I'm sure apple isn't going to say "hey guys, this new iPhone is really cool, but since we said that the iPhone 4 was "the biggest step forward" we told our iPhone team to throttle it back a bit...in fact, we had signs posted all over the iPhone 5 design room that said "NO WOW ZONE".

Every phone they release is going to be marketed as the best thing since sliced bread.

Oh, and BTW, the iPhone will be a jaw dropper of a device. I'm am 1000% certain that it will be completely different with a larger screen. Feel free to quote me on this in a couple weeks.

I see Apple releasing a 4S only. iPhone 5 will not be released until the "normal" iPhone release time next year, in my opinion. I do not see Apple releasing a new device (4S) solely to be a placeholder as its "cheaper phone" option. Apple has traditionally retained the previous generation iPhone as its cheaper alternative, and I see that continuing.

In October, we will have an iPhone 4 as the cheaper model and an iPhone 4S as the new model. The 4S will be an improved device inside. There is no way that Apple will be releasing something with an "S" suffix, only to have it be inferior in build quality or features to its namesake predecessor (iPhone 4), as some have suggested as a means for Apple to offer a cheap iPhone. Next year, in late spring/ early summer, we will have iPhone 5 (I am not confident in Apple calling it "5", though) and iPhone 4S will still be around as the cheaper alternative.

That's just how I see it.

I think there's no point in trying to argue in the names of the next device. None of us know it and we're all just speculating. I remember before the iPad 1 came out people were having debates on what the name of the tablet will be. People came out with "iTab" and "iSlate".

Is someone taking numbers on this, from posts, so we can get an average "real" % number? :)

BTW, i dont think the iPhone "5" will be released till' all carriers are on the same model cycle. ATT is 6 months ahead of Verizon and a "get through" 4S would buy time till everyone is buying the same "spankin" new "5" phone.

So throw me in for a 0%. Annnnnd
i hope I am wrong...

My Opinion..

100%
The majority of people want something "new" when they go out and buy something. Apple knows this, it will be different than the iPhone 4, not just in specs but the tangible aspect.. what the general customer looks for...design/look/feel.

Every iPhone is marketed as the best phone on the market, but apart from the iPhone 4, no other iPhone has been marketed as the biggest leap since X iPhone.

For Apple to do something again would be repetitive as we've already seen this happen before.

To maintain that X Factor I feel the iPhone will be completely revamped come iPhone 6.

Maybe Apple's not been saying anything all these months because they don't want to get people's hopes up and then deliver just an iPhone 4s. Back firing though. Now, people's expectations are through the roof.

Man, if an iPhone 4s is all they got, they're going to take a beating from the press.

Assumptions:
iPhone 4s: Same square shell, new chip and camera
iPhone 5: New tapered shell, 4" screen, new chip and camera

Love it. This is how I see it too. If a revamped 4s is all they have, you would think they would have done a better job handling expectations, like they did when they leaked WWDC would be software only.

If one phone--redesigned 4-- is all they have, then they've done a lousy job of managing expectations. Not an Apple trademark, I think most would agree. In 16 months, you would think they would do more than just upgrade a few specs on an existing shell. I'm just assuming the later than normal event date means they were waiting for more than just ios5 and icloud. People are expecting something major in hardware and there will be he'll to pay in the press if they don't get it.
