Well I guess I am pretty active with my 13in MBP, and I protect my computer with a speck see thru satin hardcase inside of a incase sleeve inside of my backpack computer compartment that has a memory foam pilliow (my parents gave it too me when they got rid of their matress, hated the thing) that is cut to size in the bottom of the computer section! Works pretty well for me!

I used to protect my Macbook Pro with an Incase Hardshell Case that fitted quite snugly inside the Incase sleeve. You don't really need the Hardshell Case or the sleeve, I currently have a sleeve that can open up all the way, and has little ...tab-like things that I can insert the top left and right hand corners of my screen and the bottom left and right corners of the bottom part of the MBP so that when you open the case you can just use your laptop just like that. No dents, (because it's lined with memory foam or something like that), and the sleeve case hybrid thing actually protects your laptop while you're working in it. It's kind of hard to explain it, but hopefully you can grasp the basic idea.

overkill but...

Okay, I recognize that this will be seen by some as overkill but here's what I've got going...

I have an Invisible Shield on my aluminum unibody MB. (It's been on there since day 1 and I'll never have a new laptop without one of these on it.)
I have a black Incipio Feather on top of that (for those that aren't familiar with the Feather think Speck See-Thru with Satin finish but a tad thinner).
I carry it around in a Timbuk2 messenger bag.

My MB is in perfect condition. :D

My wife's MBP has an Invisible Shield on it along with a Booq sleeve (which I'm sure she's doesn't use) inside an AppleSac. It's also in perfect condition.
My 12" PB is naked but only because finding Invisible Shields and hard-shell cases for it is a bit harder to do.

I have the exact same damage as a couple of others have posted. Both my top and bottom right hand display corners are bent inwards thanks to dropping my bag.

Figured my MBP would be fine in a soft and cosy Incase sleeve.

I always keep a ShaggyMac keyboard/screen protector between my screen and keyboard when closed. I then put the 13.3" MBP in a Zeroshock III case. Then, that case goes in a Targus laptop backpack.

I can throw that backpack around with no worries.

interesting... still nobody has damage while their macbook was inclosed in an incase hard case....

Haven't dented my two laptops. Both are in tech shells

My Macbook Pro did fall out of it's bag i forgot to do up the zip. well it hit the floor but i was lucky there was no damage. My foot took most of the drop.

Question for users of specially-padded sleeves

For "sleeve + bag" and "sleeve only" users (but no hardcase/shell), more specifically--for those who use sleeves padded with memory foam (LA Robe, Zeroshock, etc.) or similar special padding (Sundex Aircube, etc.):

Has anyone ever dropped his aluminum macbook for about 2-3 feet while contained in it? Did it get dented?

I'm considering buying a memory foam padded sleeve for my MBP 13 which I shall likewise carry in a well-padded bag. I just wanna find out if such specially-padded sleeves can protect my unit against a 2-3 foot drop, more so when stored in a well-padded yet very compact bag (preferably a messenger-type one).

Thanks! ;)

I dropped my MBP about 4ft onto concrete while it was only in its Incase sleeve. The machine was asleep at the time and it shows no damage from that particular drop.

I put a dent in the palm rest area of my unibody because of my iPhone. I had the phone in my lap and forgot it was there. When I got up, the phone hit the palm rest in just the right way I guess. There is now a little dent in it. It's not a big deal, but I was pretty cranky about my stupidity when it happened. Sometimes Apple products don't play nice together....

I was cycling with my MBP in its case which was on my back and clipped a lamppost which left a nice dent. About a month later the strap snapped while carrying it and that left another one.

was this a hardcase or softcase?

I have the same exact dent that is pictured in post #3.

My macbook was in a sleeve in the back of our jeep and fell onto the pavement as my dad opened up the back door.

about 2 years ago my supervisor was in a hurry to get off work and decided to throw my backpack at me cause getting out at 18:01 was obviously "dawdling"

the landing dented my lower left palm rest, halfway killed my DVD burner (it reads but can't burn), and my track pad has been overly sensitive since. it was 1 month past the 3 year warranty.

so yeah, how to prevent it? it's basically like driving a car, shooting a gun, sky diving...don't get into accidents. don't do stupid crap like leave it on the edge of table, keept it near coffee when you (people around you) have two left hands/feet, don't let people borrow it etc etc etc.

however, after it got dented i got over my phobia of keeping my laptop in pristine condition and started using it like, you know, a normal person :D

I would've done two things here.

One: I would've b***h-slapped my supervisor repeatedly.
Two: I would've made him pay for the repair. Or a new unit, depending on the outcome of the damage.

But hey. that's me. I have an extreme problem with people that have no respect for anyone else's stuff.

1. Was wearing a backpack with my MBP inside a neoprene case when I locked up the front brake on my motorcycle and was tossed over the handlebars.

2. a harder case probably would have helped, but not being dumb on my bike would have helped too.

The MBP still runs perfectly and just has a small dent. Laptop of the gods I tell ya.

Nope never. I use the Speck Satin Case (soft touch, hard shell). I got it for free because Apple lost my Snow Leopard pre-order in the mail  At least I got a free $60 case out of it! And they also paid to express everything :D

My case has minor scratches on the bottom right corner, but it's hardly noticeable. The actual mbp is in perfect condition. I've slightly hit a few things around the corners, but the case protects it really well!

Apple completely ballsed up my SL order and still have my money. :(

I got a slight dent on the side near one of the USB ports from when my mother was cleaning my room and knocked it off my desk. It's not that noticeable though. I didn't even realize it until I went to plug in my iPhone and I was like WTH? Mom what did you do? And she confessed.

My 2006 MBP isn't dented. Because when I spend $2500 on something, I take an extra 1/2 second and think before I act. I.e. I don't drop it, or drop anything on it.

My old 15" non unibody feel off my bed with the magsafe in. The area surrounding the magsafe was dented in. My first unibody, I had it on the floor and the remote feel off the bed and left a small dent on the top case.

I too flung my MacBook Pro over my shoulder in an unzipped backpack. I was in my driveway, grabbed my backpack from the truck, went to put said backpack over shoulder and the laptop flew like frisbee. It was all very surreal as time literally seemed to slow to a crawl and I helplessly watched as it tumbled through the air towards the asphalt.

Amazingly, I only suffered a fairly minor dent that I polished up to look acceptable. Over the past months though, the plastic seal at the seam has broken away. Kind of odd that it took such a long time for that to chip off. It seemed to have survived the impact ok at the time.

I have a 2006 MBP as well and while I've never dropped it or dropped anything on it, you can't prevent others from doing those things to it when you're not around. Even though I sternly say "STAY AWAY FROM MY MAC," sometimes parents and siblings just don't listen and accidents happen.

great thanks for that input. The next time I accidentally drop or knock my macbook pro, i'll be sure to think about it for an extra 1/2 second.
