Gf dented hers by putting it on the nightstand, then a cat jumped on it and knocked it off. It hit the nightstand lower moulding, denting the corner.

Mine is in good shape, just has some oxidation or something on the inside surface below the keyboard. Apple won't replace the top case. Oh well, it's just looks.

Now I'm getting soo paranoid. :D

But frankly, I share the same concern. I hope you guys don't mind if I rephrase the question a bit. Here it goes:

How can a MacBook Pro 13" survive a 4-5 ft. drop?

I'm a lawyer and I live a very active lifestyle, and I'm very much mobile. Thus the probability of me dropping it--contained in a bag and properly cushioned, that is--is highly likely.

I just recently bought my MBP and I'm just using an ordinary American Tourister bag (which I used for my previous PC laptop).

I still haven't decided on which good bag, sleeve, etc I should buy; but I seriously need to buy a good set of 'em quite soon, since the MBP with its aluminum casing is noticeably more fragile than my previous laptop (an HP/Compaq).

I would highly appreciate it if you guys would recommend good combinations of the following:
  • relatively compact bag for 13" MacBook Pro (unibody);
  • hard cases or similar protective covers;
  • sleeves or similar protective cushions; and
  • other means of protection from shock, dents, scratches, etc. (but mainly shock and dents).

Thanks in advance! Happy New Year! :)

My buddy (6ft) was running with his MacBook trips flys out opens upside down and he lands on it, I cringe bracing for a sickening crunch and I realize I didn't hear it, MacBook worked fine, in fact the hard drive wasn't even damaged! However when he took it to the genius bar the dude was like WTF!!!! so he got a new case and it was cool

anyone get a dent while their MBP was wearing a hardcase?

Yes, but its more like some minor warpage on the left display corner on the front. It is hardly noticeable at all. It fell from about 4 feet above the ground onto the carpet in my high school (no padding, just concrete with a layer of thin carpet on top.)

Mine has a couple dents (or rather pieces of aluminium have been gouged of the unibody); still works and I don't know how it happened.

I've done 3 corners now... all 3 times my bag strap snapped. That's what I get for buying cheap bags I guess.... anyways it's adds character... i have to get the hammer out to flatten the bottom though because it's rocking now :(

My MacBook Pro has no dents because I never take it anywhere. If I need to take a laptop somewhere I take my old G4 PowerBook (which also has no dents but a fair share of scratches).

put mine in a soft case with a neoprene handle, got out of car, help loosly in hand got door keys out and dropped bag, laptop fell from waist hight and was badly buckled, at first optical drive wasnt working but all else was , - sent it away for repair evaluation, and was advised to replace laptop so got a nice shiney new one from the nice insurance people ....

Optical drive worked when it was returned incidentally.
So would have continued to operate i think.

How could i have prevented it ?? not got a bag with a ***** handle and not been a idiot and dropped it lol

Pre-Intel broken screen from automobile. Solution: Don't leave it in the driveway before backing out. Still works though, just requires an external monitor.

Unibody Broken LCD from 3 ft fall onto hardwood floor. Solution: Kill the f&*cking cat. $500 repair.

Just put a dent in my Aluminium Unibody MB. It was in the laptop sleeve in a PacSafe backpack which was upright on my chair. The backpack wasn't balanced quite right and fell off the chair. Somehow my Fuji F30 was under the laptop sleeve in the backpack (in a separate case).

So, it now has a large (about 40 mm long, indented by about 2mm) dent between the lock slot and the battery indicator. The battery cover doesn't fit quite properly any more and is pushed out at the bottom. D'oh. Looks like it might pull out a little, but it has got its first battle scar (apart from the time the apple on the back of the screen came out).

Still works perfectly of course although its well out of Applecare now. Thankfully the F30 was fine. I'd be more upset if I broke that, as a good one is hard to get! I do have accidental damage cover, but this is the first 'book I've damaged noticeably. I've had at least 11 and I started with a 190.

I dent my macbook pro yesterday. It's not big dent but the 1st dent. It's just like a new white sneakers, the 1st stain makes you really unhappy...
I was hit it on the side of my bed when I was trying to hide the mac under my bed for my 1.5 year old son who loves the apple logo on it...

I realise this thread is old, but having had a perfect macbook for 3 years I have just managed to drop a glass of water on it. This has soaked it through (rectified - thankfully) and put a massive dent on top.

Not happy and I'm still sulking!

OK, it seems kind of suspicious to only see stories from people with dented macbook's who had on no sleve or only a softcase. Why no hardcases? Do they offer better protection by shattering upon impact like a bicycle helmet?

I've gone ahead and taken the liberty of contacting incase about this. Lets see if they would prefer the neporene cases or the hardcase....

Suspicious? Hard case manufacturers are conspiring to... protect laptops?

Bastards.

I have had my macbook pro a week now and have the same dent as in the post on page 1.

The macbook fell about 3 ft onto the laminate floor. Works perfectly though so guess I was lucky.

If it had been my old laptop it would have been dead now

For "sleeve + bag" and "sleeve only" users (but no hardcase/shell), more specifically--for those who use sleeves padded with memory foam (LA Robe, Zeroshock, etc.) or similar special padding (Sundex Aircube, etc.):

Has anyone ever dropped his aluminum macbook for about 2-3 feet while contained in it? Did it get dented?

I'm considering buying a memory foam padded sleeve for my MBP 13 which I shall likewise carry in a well-padded bag. I just wanna find out if such specially-padded sleeves can protect my unit against a 2-3 foot drop, more so when stored in a well-padded yet very compact bag (preferably a messenger-type one).

Thanks! ;)

Yes,I did.
i leaned back to get the charger while having the mac on my lap,it fell about 3 feet, and got dented near the superdrive end.
Barely noticeable,Super drive works though :p
And a small dent near the power button.

Well I'm lucky to have never gotten any dents on the corners, but I got one on the front screen casing. From what I've read, Apple would of probably replaced it for me, but I was dumb enough to not ask them, and now it's too late. Short story: a wireless router fell onto my case and dented it. I don't get how such a lightweight plastic piece of crap could do it..but it did. Next MBP I will get a hard case first thing.

I may or may not have been consuming alcoholic beverages when my roommate and I decided to have a who can throw their MacBook Pro farther contest. After we each threw our MBPs across the room onto a couch, I decided to step it up and throw mine onto my bed in my room which was connected to the living room. My MBP hit the bed, landing on its edge, and bounced onto the floor. The super drive slot ended up getting completely bent, and to this day, I still can't reliably get discs out of the drive.

I probably could have prevented it by not being an idiot...

Oh. Wow. I think you officially win the idiot award. :p But you also get a prize for telling the truth. So you're even. :)

Motorcycle accident. It was in an incase neoprene sleeve in my backpack.. but lets face it... I was tossed over the handle bars so there isn't much the case would have done.

I could have prevented it by not grabbing a handful of front brake.

Oh and that was 2 1/2 years ago and its running just fine.
