So far, based on the feedback given, it seems that MBP users are able to protect their units against dents through:
  • the use of a hard case;
  • and/or the exercise of diligence.

Hahaha! :p

I replied earlier in this thread. But I will re-state that I use a soft sleeve and a backpack, and my MacBook Pro has no dents.

My hinge has a bit of play after dropping my 15" late 2008 unibody macbook pro from 1 foot (inside of its soft case) onto a carpet floor, though I've eaten sh*t on my skateboard on the way to class with it in its case in my backpack and everything was perfectly fine?

I have the worst luck. I managed to drop my Mac Book Pro onto the top of my Mac Pro. It pushed in the corner of my MBP, which is hardly noticable. Mac Pro came off worse with a dent on the top of the case and on one of the top 'handles'.

Choose the pre-dented option!

I only have one dent on my MBP and Apple supplied it that way. It's not huge but it was annoying to see it as I unboxed the thing. I bought from Apple online - and because all I needed was a new back plate (the dent was over the HDD) I went to the Apple store. They "couldn't" help - you buy online deal with it online. :(

Rather than wait for another MBP and send the first back I accepted Apple's offered £60 rebate. I then used half of it to buy a clear speck case (so I can't feel the dent every time I pick it up!:p).

Don't keep heavy server hard disks above your MacBook Pro. That's what I recommend. I have two dents on the corner above my SuperDrive. The drive landed flat on it so the two edges left their mark.

so I've got to update this thread. Today, while my macbook pro was in it's neoprene case and inside my bicycle pannier, I dropped my bicycle while parking it. Just that fall in and of itself was enough to scratch and dent the macbook pro - THROUGH the neoprene and pannier bag. How lame. It's a really small, barely noticible scratch and dent in the lower right corner of the screen bezel, but it's still there.

I can't help but think that had I bought the hardcase, i could have avoided this situation. Oh well, life goes on.

To anyone out there - get a hardcase to protect your mbp from scratches that might void your warranty!

One day it just appeared. I have no idea because I baby it. I expect my old roommate. I also suspect he was the one who scratched my precious 26" H-IPS monitor.

1. My MBP was in a incase neoprene softsleeve and inside my Eastpak backpack. The backpack worked itself loose and the laptop fell out and landed on the sidewalk. The corner near the superdrive dented. I replaced the top case, bottom case and keyboard for over $300 and it was almost good as new.

2. I bought a Jack Spade Greene St. messenger bag to prevent future incidents.

I had a pre-unibody macbook pro in a Targus sleeve type case with strap. I am very careful, but one day one of the strap just broke off and the case landed on the corner asphalt.... Dented the inside computer.

Since then, I don't ever, ever buy cheap cases/bags. Learned my lesson. When I called Targus to complain, they said they would replace the bag but SOL on the computer damage.

BTW, it was this crap case. If someone else has it, be careful! Be sure to look at the stitching on the strap area. On this case, it was very, very poorly done. Very weak. Design defect.

I just keep a transparent Speck hard case on mine. Have dropped it and while I've broken one top piece of the Speck case (the tabs that hold it on snapped), everything else was fine, still not a scratch or dent on my MBP.

Here's a story for you, I carried around a 1.5ghz 12" PBG4 for 4 years and it never got a scratch, didn't have a case or anything.

Makes me feel bad that I dropped my MBP, maybe because it has the case and is protected, I'm not as careful as I tend to be with my stuff.

I had a messenger-style bag I carried my 15" MBP in. One day, while walking to my car from my apartment, the loop that holds the shoulder strap came undone from the side of the case and the case plunged 3 feet on to concrete and dented the left hand side of the bottom casing.

When my GF8600 went bad, Apple wouldn't honor the warranty on it because it had been dropped. They wanted to replace the bottom casing, top casing/keyboard/trackpad, logic board, power board, screen casing, hard drive and DVD drive and charge me $1800 for it.

I said **** that **** and replaced the bottom casing and logic board myself for $350. I ended up replacing the top casing keyboard and trackpad because I wanted the newer model trackpad capable of gestures, not that it attered when Snow Leopard came out.

My week old MBP fell from my bed tonight and has a dent and the bottom right corner and top is misaligned. If they dont fix it, can i just return and go to a different location to puchase it?

The first time I dropped it I was being stupid . Was on the phone and was carrying it with one hand with a terrible grip. I felt it slipping and tried to swing it up but ended up hitting my tile floor. :( Now it has a small dent on the bottom left of the left palmrest and on the top left of my screen.

I suppose my next puchase should be a hardcase.

Dropped it down an escalator in China--that was the biggest one. Fell out of the bag, which I didn't zip, on the BTS train in Bangkok (nasty corner dent). Fell off of a bar in Bali into the aluminum bartender's sink (wrinkled around the DVI port). No, I won't explain how that happened. Stuffed it in a backpack when I was hiking around Borneo (tons of scratches and scuffs, also lost two rubber feet). Fell off the arm of my couch three times... typically after I fell asleep.

It's beat to h***... still works, though.

Can someone please tell me the best way to handle this tomorrow? I have an appt at noon. Its actually 13 days old(bought it on the 1st) so Im wondering if they will give me a hard time about replacing the case?

I currently dont have $110 restocking fee but I will in a few weeks. I need advice please

My 15" UMBP was not protected at the time of this incident. I was just moving it from a table to my lap. I brought it down to early and hit the corner of the table and gave it not even half the size of a dime dent. You can hardly see it or feel it if you move your finger over it but it's there.

I could have prevented it if I didn't hit it on the table. I thought it was going to be worse because to me it seemed that it hit the corner pretty hard.

Glad it's on the bottom so it's not visible and luckily its so small. So I am not worried at all about it, actually forgot about it until I read the title of this thread. I try to take care of it, and leave it naked. I feel it's a really beautiful product and I like to see it in the nude then cover it up, the only Apple product I cover up is my iPhone

i baby my macbook pro ALOT so it still has no scratches or dents after 8months of having it.

i bought a BOOQ case for it, for when i go somewhere with it.

Had my Aluminium MacBook for about a year and half now and no dents or scratches at all. I haven't exactly babied it. Dropped it a couple of times.

I was holding my blackberry tour (now have a iphone4) over one of the MBP's here at work, dropped the blackberry and it landed to the left of the touchpad, left a crater like dent.

I haven't gotten any dents yet, but I have a small scratch on the front cover because I was being stupid and screwing around with this long spring. I lost my grip, and it flung out of my hand, and scratched my MacBook cover as it slid across the back end.

I also have a few scratches on the bottom, because my friend moved it over the table which had a screw sticking out of it.

I baby the crap out of it, too. I wipe it down weekly, so it always looks brand new :p
