If you're not shelling out $99 a year to AAPL, that's illegal

OMG. It looks like I've committed a crime and that the copy was illegal. How could one tell that he installed an illegal copy when it has no copy protection at all. Let's hope that only GOD will judge me for this unforgivable sin :)
Well at least I've removed the god-damned copy of iOS Lion GM two hours later. Been too disappointed to keep it hanging around on my hard drive. Can't stand the Launchpad, Mission Control and missing Rosetta. Got back to my sacred copy of the Snow Kitty :D

As if your dissatisfaction with the product justifies the piracy? I'm not judging you, just your rationale

Even in wear shop they give you the opportunity to try before buy.

There should be an option for us beta testers that got Lion through Appleseed. I am surprised how few people actually know that there is also a beta group for Lion with people that are not developers.

I did not know of the beta group when I created the thread, if I could edit the poll I would add it

60% of people in this thread are going straight to hell.

I'm sure pirating software is the least of peoples sins in this thread. I'm sure 98.789% have done worse things to warrant a trip to hell.

And as for the poll I am using Snow Leopard... I briefly considered "obtaining" Lion GM but started reading about all the bugs and just decided to wait for Apple's release (even though it will probably be the same build I know)

I was worried about putting it on a production machine but it works well, the graphics driver needs some work (nvidia 320m) but owell. It's nice having python 2.7 included and the new version of Terminal is my favorite "feature" of Lion :p

If it's not yet available to buy then is it technically stealing to download it?

I got mine from usenet but I don't want to get into trouble with updates possibly not working on mine so I will get it from the app store when available.

I hope they have some good load balancing on the app store.

Yes, by law it is illegal.

The mac app store is for updating apps whereas Software Update is capable of applying patches to the system, giving the app store those kind of system changing permissions is scary if the approval team ever missed something it could be a catastrophe

I see your point, but I cannot see Apple allowing the GM to access updates when they're selling it via the Mac App Store.

You can't obtain a pirated iPhone app and simply stick it into iTunes and update it yourself when signed in with your Apple ID. The software is, as you'll be well aware, digitally signed to you. I can see Apple requiring a digitally signed, legitimate, Mac App Store purchased copy to access updates.

People sitting on the GM they obtained, thinking it's a sneaky freebie, will surely be left very disappointed.

Well, the mac app store doesn't digitally sign crap, it's still up to the software developers to stop piracy of their applications, there is no real digital signatures in the mac app store, it just keeps track of what you've purchased through it.

I am 99.99999999% sure apple will still update Lion through Software Update seeing as we've gotten some updates on the DP releases

I understand that, but I'd be very disappointed if I have to download Lion AGAIN when it's released. I'm an Apple developer, by the way.

Yeah, but your copy will be digitally signed to you, as a developer and be eligible for updates regardless of where they come. I just can't see Apple allowing the GM to update via Software Update, thus handing a freebie to all those who want it due to Lion GM being very easily available.

So you're saying apps from the Mac App Store are not signed in the same way those on the iOS App Store are?

Snow Leopard GM was easy to obtain and you were still able to download updates.

Great poll, I was surprised so many people pirated it!

I'm willing to bet that the majority of the people who did pirate Lion not because they were trying to save the 30 dollars but to get access to it before it comes out.
