I didn’t. She said let’s get married. I said OK. 27 happy years ago. We compromise, meaning I give in and go along. The dog I had then had to move to the floor from the bed. We have cats now. Trying to train one of them to be a dog. It’s not working.

I believe that if you can’t surprise your partner then it’s good to just escalate things in a really positive way. I proposed when we went out one night to our fave burger joint. On the way home we decided to go for a walk, which lead us into helping a lost woman, which lead us to buying dinner for a homeless guy. We then took the guy for a trip around the city, we bumped into friends and he later joined them, feeling full of love and joy I just asked my partner if they wanted to marry me. Low and behold she said yes. That was about 15 years ago.

Met in August, started dating two weeks later. Got engaged that October. No big asking her or her asking me story. We just both knew we wanted to be together from when we met.
The only reason we waited until October to get engaged was I was living 300 miles away and that was the first time I had visited her since I went back up North.
Been married 20 years this September. Been lots of trials, but thats life.

Best advice I can give is this:

Spend more time planning the marriage than the wedding.

Always try and be the first to apologise.

And yes a lovely thread.

Some sound advice.

With divorced parents, I had a fear of marriage thinking I should live with someone as the ultimate test to maximize chances of success in a marriage. I was an officer in the USNavy, in my mid twenties, had been dating my wife for a year and got orders to leave Texas. She wanted to get married, I wanted her to come live with me in California. She reluctantly told me yes, she would go with me but because her parents were Catholic, they would be very upset. After feeling guilty about this for several weeks, I thought, this person is perfect and I should take a chance, finally said “why don’t we get married?” Probably not the most romantic proposal, but the resulting union has lasted 37 years so far. ;)

I replied 10 years ago saying I don’t even have someone I like. I met her not too long after that.

We took a trip to NYC with a ring in my coat. She had no idea I was going to propose. The first night she was looking for something and was searching my coat. I said don’t go through my stuff. She was not happy.

We stopped by Tiffany’s and she liked an engagement ring. I asked her if she was going to buy one for herself. She was not happy.

After dinner on the second night, we took a stroll to Central Park where they had horse carriages. She’s been riding horses since forever so she love horses. She didn’t want to ride it since it was chilly that night and it was expensive, I insisted. I got to the facing seat infront and pulled out the box. Very nervously asked her to marry me, she cried right away.

Til this day she still say I didn’t get down on one knee and she should have said no. In my defence, I don’t think there is room but she thinks otherwise.

If and when the time someday comes, this will be a good thread to refer to for ideas :D

my wife is egalitarian, which is one of the things I love about her. She just couldn't think of the whole "boys-asks-girl" bit.

Think about how many golden opportunities are missed because of this stupid rule. Not just marriage proposals, but dating and courtship in general.

Well me and my girl went to a restaurant.
Not posh or anything.

Well our proposal was very very strange as me both had rings for each other.
and well she knew the restaurant owner and she had a tablet centre piece she made already on table as it was reserved for this evening.

It was on the 2nd anniversary of use getting together, yes she booked it for same day we became a couple.

I presented her with the ring, which she had seen before and tried on for size at the store.
I was paying in instalments as was quite expensive. It was about a months pay.

your all saying this sounds dumb as she knows?
Bet ya all are.

Any way I asked "would you do me the honour of being my wife?"
she replied with "oh, go on then" yes her actual words!

elderly couple at next table smiled as we exchanged rings.

We have not yet tied knot. we got engaged 6 years ago.

We have not had a fight yet and only 2 arguments.

but we love each other and everyone says they can see it in how we look at each other.

we been trying sort out plans but her family is HUGE.

I’m not yet married, but my girlfriend and I have been dating for like 6 years now.

We originally met swimming laps next to each other day after day. Eventually we struck up a conversation and started swimming together. Eventually I popped the question if she wanted to grab some dinner, and it all went from there. I like to joke she was attracted to a man in a Speedo.

We’ve now lived together for about 5 years. We just bought a condo together in fact. Once she graduates med school we’ll probably get married. I’m not sure how I’ll pop the question, but I hope to make it epic.
