Truffle oil is delicious.

i agree, but truffle oil usually doesn't contain truffles, which do taste moderately different (i.e. truffles produce a more mellifluous taste with particular piquant accents that I miss when I use truffle oil; unfortunately truffles are too expensive in Germany, and truffle hogs/dogs are very difficult to loan, so sometimes I do hedge and go with the oil, as ****** as it is)

It's controversial, because the truffle flavours in it are usually synthetic - not the real thing. That doesn't undermine its tastiness (unless you're a food snob)... and it does still have value in cookery, but you should know what you're eating.

It depends on the oil though. I've seen truffle oil with actual truffle.

Newsflash: people's preferences vary. Get over yourself. You too, KnightWRX.

I buy top quality cuts and I marinate because... I like it that way. This shouldn't matter to you or anyone else that isn't eating what I'm cooking.

I don't mind a marinade. A good marinade breaks down the meat a little bit and leaves it extra tender. As I said before, I've gone from a tartare with nothing on it but a raw egg, to professionally aged, to marinated. You always taste the meat unless you cover it up with BBQ sauce. I don't mind having some extra, varied flavors.

This thread is making me hungry.

Me too. I think I have some steaks in the fridge somewhere. :)

Cool. New replies automatically add to the bottom of a post now? Awesome!

We can't ever discuss anything here. So what if the preferences differ, can't we discuss it in a thread asking how we like our steak ?

That's why we can never have nice conversations, always someone to say "people's preferences vary, don't discuss yours!".

The problem with you KnightWRX is that you don’t discuss. You dictate….

"Lesser" restaurants, most here in the states won't serve anything under 120F. Go some place that charges $70 for a decent steak dinner and you probably can't get anything under 120F, give or take 5F from resting.

I'm pretty sure Bern's will gives you whatever you want. I had it rare the last time I was there. Man what a good steak that was. And it comes with everything (salad, soup, potatoes, etc) at a very reasonable price. The overall experience costs more (wine, dessert, etc) but dinner is very reasonable, and they measure their cuts AFTER cooking. And if they shortchange you, you get a smaller piece to make up the difference.

The waiters have to spend time actually working in the restaurant's fields so that they know how everything comes together. I think it takes something ridiculous like 16 years to become a Bern's waiter. I don't know why you'd go to any of the other high end restaurants in Tampa for steak unless you like getting ripped off.

Please stop! Maybe you should buy this book!

Anyone who needs a book to learn how to create happy endings is in the wrong business. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I'm sure there are places that will give you under 120F but generally there is a concern that someone will come back and cry food poisoning. I've heard of the place but I don't frequent the area enough to have been able to go there myself.

I can't believe there's 2 replies to the survey for no steak!

I happen to have a nice T-bone steak in the fridge that I'm looking forward to when I get out of work... and lo and behold, there's a MR thread about steaks! How did I miss this for so long?

The US has never been recognized for cusine. Seriously, it's really bad.

That's quite a generalization. Usually I don't disagree with you, but this is a ludicrous comment. It's not really bad. We're not a food mecca, but don't act like you can't find anywhere to have an amazing meal. If you can't, you're not looking hard enough.

I'm really tired of people acting like there's nothing good in this country. That's just stupid. Most of our people come from other countries. We have good cooks from all over the world.

Would you believe that the worst french onion soup I ever had was in France? The best was also in France, but it was at a Spanish restaurant, owned by Spanish people who didn't speak French. The second best was right here in the states.

Ireland isn't known for it's cuisine either, but steak and Guinness pie is amazing.

There's good food everywhere if you know where to look. Just watch Bizarre Foods.

Anyone ever had a beef carpaccio? (thinly sliced raw beef usually served as an appetizer)

Yes, it's delicious. I've had it both in Paris and here.

I'd also recommend Spanish Chorizo. While it's not raw, it's still amazingly delicious and quite unlike Mexican Chorizo which is dry.

It was posted today..

I don't eat steak. I don't even know why I read this whole thread.

to be honest, I don't hate the US/North America. I don't even hate the people. I am honestly just shocked at what Americans accept for quality. If people tried to serve anything from an American chain restaurant over here, people would just walk out and refuse to pay.

Come on, you guys should be demanding much better quality, especially in beef! It's America for "crying out loud."

I don't want to turn this into something else, but the same can be said of what Europeans accept as quality in other areas like tiny bathrooms, ancient plumbing, and ancient infrastructure.

I live in a 1000 sqft. bungalow, so I'm not judging, but there are obviously various drawbacks to living in either place.

Honestly, I love Europe, but I could never accept European views on freedom, "safety," anti-gun views, etc. The only thing that saddens me about America is that we're heading down the same path only 50 years out.

To be fair, they are by far, the most common restaurant in existence in the US.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_restaurant_chains_in_the_United_States

To be fairer there are more individuals who can cook than there are restaurants and they all probably cook better than chains.

Some of you are way to picky and judgmental. :p

My mom made steak tonight. :) It was medium (I usually prefer it medium rare to rare) but it was still good. I also made a mushroom sauce, not because I think the steak needed it but I just like mushroom sauce with steak sometimes. I'm happy. :)

If you have a chance, go.

I'm surprised that you've heard of it if you're from out of town. I know their wine selection is internationally known, but I have no idea how well known they are outside of my city and surrounding areas.

Everyone here knows them though.

I'll eat it no matter how it's cooked. I prefer a warm rare, but if it's well done, it's still better than most other meats. Yeah, it's "ruined," but it's even more ruined if no one eats it.

There's an awesome place here called the Spain that sells cut steak—so tender I cut it with a spoon—in an amazing mushroom sauce.

I kind of like that everyone has a different preference for steak. It's fun to try to cook them to other's specifications. It's a challenge.

I don't care how anyone else likes it as long as they eat it. I don't get the vegan/vegetarian argument—especially if it hinges upon not harming living things, because plants are alive too. They just can't scream. We were made to eat meat. Period. Anything else is less efficient.

And if the animal is already dead, I think it's wrong to not eat it. Then it died in vain.

Let's see how far this can get downvoted.

The US has never been recognized for cusine. Seriously, it's really bad. I've had a few good meals in the US, but they are few and far between and you really have to be careful about the places you eat at.

The Keg now has a few places in the States, that's one of our good, affordable steak houses up here in Canada :

http://www.kegsteakhouse.com/en/locations/

Looking at the United States menu, they do offer the Blue and rare cooking options :

Having ordered blue from Keg before, I can tell you it's a mighty good steak, no matter the cut (sirloin, filet mignon, new york, etc..).

Really, way to use a very broad stoke to paint that picture. Good lord. There are plenty of great restuarants and places to eat that have damn good food.
