I thought this was relatively low-key compared to my daily meetings with department heads.

You guys need to "toughen up" and to "learn to relax" at the same time.

Re-read the comment, I wasn't championning the Canadian business, I was pointing out that it's just untrue that you can't get a rare or blue steak in the US. Someone said in the US, steak houses serve nothing under 120F, I pointed out the Keg and their US menu which offers Blue as a cooking option.

But yes, the Keg is amazing, if you go there, Billy Miner pie is a must.

Our reputation may be that our food isn't that great, but if you actually find out where the people who know what they're talking about go, then you'll find good food. I think this is true of everywhere—Quebec, Tampa, Paris, Dublin, wherever.

I did read it, but for sanity, I'll quote the TL;DR ;)

I find that finding a good restaurant in Quebec is not really hard. Even the "American diner" type places serve up good food and about anything with a waiter if a decent place to eat. Fast food chains ? Same crap as yours of course, though it does seem our food courts hold a few gems, thanks to MTY group up in Montreal having quite a few decent banners with a broader selection than your typical american fare.

Again, my experience with the States has been that the "diner" type places are quite subpar compared to our own, with much greasier food and much less overall flavor.

"fancy" restaurants are few (50$ per person). We stayed in Dover NH last year, and there was like 1 restaurant in the whole of downtown that was a cut above (and we didn't eat there because some people in the group are cheap bastards), the rest were... well... we ate at this "Irish" place, that served "deep fried bacon" with chocolat as an appetizer. Sure it was ... hum... nice, but hardly worth the money. We stayed far from the sea-food place outside the hotel. And yes, I did look on the Internet to find the places, there just wasn't that much of a selection.

In Quebec, in a small place like Saint-Lambert, you have about 3 french restaurants, 3 new cuisine places, a bunch of high asian places on top of all the lower end diners and chains. In a 3 block radius in downtown, and the place is smaller than Dover. The food up here is really great. It's not Europe great, but it really is a cut above, and this isn't me gloating or anything.

About Cuba Libre, I discovered this place while staying at the Tropicana resort on a 3 day trip to Atlantic City. There were about 2 decent restaurants in there, Cuba Libre being one of them (the other one was called Red Square, served a dessert that costs 1000$, so yeah, it was amazingly good eating there). Is it purely hispanic food like your grandma's ? I dunno. I also didn't quite catch your "Philly" hate there, as I'm not from the states and have no bias for city reputations. Their speciality is rhum and that's why we went in initially, but we left with a very good impression of the food.

Funny, since the USDA requires suppliers to irradiate our meat as part of the packing process!

The FDA/USDA is a large part of the problem.

For example:

In some states, you can't get cheese or other food products made from unpasteurized milk ... no good (any depending on definition?) Roquefort for you :(

You can't get products with coumarine, so no Żubrówka for you :(

You can't get edible chocolate with toys inside, so now Überraschungei for you :(

That last one is a shame, because their extremely fun and cheap

Just don't do it, you won't convince them.

I found the difference between MTL and Boston "night and day." I think one can get world-quality food in the US, if one looks. It's not impossible by any means, but the ratio of good/poor is so skewed that it's hardly worth taking a chance.

The "cheap bastards" problem is also common, especially when you're accustomed to food prices outside the US (much higher than inside the US). Also, I've noticed that the concept of dinning is much different, I hate the concept of table turnover that's been adopted in a lot of places. I'd gladly pay 2-3x as much for a meal and not feel rushed or disturbed by the waitstaff, and have the table until closing (usually they'll make more than enough on the extra bottles of wine anyway.)

actually it varies state-by-state with the unpasturized dairy, that's why i said "in some states."

i've never seen a Kinder Surprise (Überraschungsei), granted I haven't been to every market in the country.

I would suspect you wouldn't step foot in America given your extreme hatred for it despite it being your birthplace from what I gather.

I just don't feel this bond to my birthplace like it's something special. I think people that do are ridiculous. A person develops their whole life, therefore, why should one be bound to an Ameri-centric perspective. It's just that most members of the board are close-minded and can't grasp the conversation-at-hand because their perspective is too limited. In addition, most seem to defend anything American with the paucity of character that I would expect from a rabid canine.

Almost 60º here today in NY. Will be grilling some lovely filet mignons later. Medium rare of course.
 
Filet, grilled Medium Rare, oscar style (with crab meat and Bernaise). We have local place called the Port City Chop House that delivers the goods. Pricey, but worth ever pennt on a special occasion.

I've experienced plenty, perhaps less than you, but plenty and I know what I believe to be right and wrong. What I am saying is that you have this exorbitant amount of disgust for a country you were birthed in and you voice it so much that it is borderline psychotic. There has to be more to you than this extremist attitude. I'm guessing something bad happened to you here and that could be where you come from. The best way I can put it is that it is like when the fat kid in school is bullied on a continual basis so when they're all grown up, skinny and very successful all they can think of is making sure the people who teased them are reminded of how awesome they are decades later. They do it to a point where it is more of a detriment to them because the bullies, most of them, have also grown up and moved on. In other words, move on. You hate America, you got out, congrats. You win the internet or whatever you were hoping to win.
