You ask me how to relax, my answer is - nothing can be relaxing as long as you have a child and he goes to the 6th grade. Seriously, every time he comes to me asking for help with his home assignments, I feel stupid. F.e., those Chemistry lessons...he was asked to grow crystals. How the heck can I do this at home? I 've bought a special kit for growing them, something of that kind https://finderiko.com/crystal-growing-kit. Still, the teacher told us we were supposed to do that without any kits... That's why my relaxing is getting a bottle of Bud and enjoying a Sunday baseball match... On Sunday the school is closed, at least.

You've heard of ice crystals. Send him to school with an insulated ice cube.

Ever make Rock Candy? Giant sugar crystals :D
Pretty cool and kids can have fun with it.

To grow those colorful crystals all you need is alum powder and boiling hot water. Alum powder can be bought from the store if you're in the US, Canada or UK. It'll be food grade alum powder, and you'll use a significant amount of it versus what you'd use to pickle fruit or vegetables that need to remain crunchy.

I was looking up how to make sugar crystals the other day out of boredom. My late grandmother used to make terrific lemon flavored ones using all of the lemon. Sweet, tangy and bitter at the same time.

Of course, it's __sugar__ (and water, and maybe a little food coloring or flavoring)

They're fun for a party, in flavors, and use as swizzle sticks for adult beverages. :D
Not to mention if made properly and dried adequately, it'll keep for decades if not exposed to moisture.

It's funny you say that, a couple of years ago we found a little tin container in a box of Christmas decorations (attic, but ours is finished, has A/C), just hadn't pulled it out in years, it was some rock candy (in XMas colors, red and green), that to the best of our knowledge was at least 7-8 years old.

It didn't make it past XMas that year :D

Hahahaha, I ate some ancient chocolates one year - again, right around Christmas - they were those little boozy chocolates that contain liquors like Kahlua ... had them stashed under the bar for, ugh, too long ...

I had a similar incident of finding stashed rock candy that was maybe over a decade old. Tasted fine. What happened with the chocolate? I think I know which ones you're talking about. Berger somethings. I've seen them at Costco for years and years, and other places, too.

The oldest chocolate I had was as old as some people on this site. Though it had been in a freezer so that doesn't count. Tasted fine if not a little bland.

Oh yeah, so on topic ...

Anything that's not work (like my paid professional activities), it doesn't have to be low physical demands (I find working out / fillding with my car relaxing), or not "thinking" per se (I regularly plink around in some new language to relax), I think it's a mix of no specific demands, no critical timelines, etc. That's why I'm not a fan of some vacations, like traveling with friends who are all scheduled out, or even a theme park where you're scrambling from one things to the next, frantically pounding on your phone trying to get fast passes.

We know people like that. They'll travel to some nice island but end up running around the entire time they're there instead of sitting in the sand and relaxing.

Though I don't mind the minimal activity on vacation like walking around, shopping or hiking if it's a scenic place. Also the reason I don't get cruise ships. They seem such a waste!

Either I play video games for hours or I drive at night and order comfort food somewhere like coffee and donuts.

Movies, either watching them or listening to a podcast about them. Focusing on a world and stories that have nothing to do with my daily job or chores. Logging my movies on letterboxd, writing reviews...

its been my zen hobby since I was at least 7 years old.

I’m the kind of person who is always doing something. At best I take short breaks on YouTube, macrumors, and so on.

I’m not really into tv or any other hobbies. I’m not the kind of person to sit by the pool and drink a cocktail or just read a book.

I’m looking for tips on how to relax and what hobbies I could take up.

I really don’t have a hobby.

I relax by not relaxing.

I’m really into miniature war gaming now. Specifically Star Wars: Legion. It’s all your favorite characters and vehicles from Star Wars. I spend hours painting the little figures. It’s a blast.

I'm a GM at a movie theatre. I relax by drinking adult beverages and smoking cigars. My doctor is not concerned, she's amazed that I've dropped 70 pounds since March.
