I work...on my Mac...I only have one.

But yes, I think people afford fancy computers by working, and I'm not talking about minimum wage jobs. Lots of graphic artist, web designs, video professionals and photographers on the site. Not saying those are all big money careers, but if your good you can make a nice living.

Yep- a lot of us are design professionals. And no, you won't get rich doing it. :)

I personally save up the cash or find a good financing deal. I just got 12 months same as cash on my PM G5 through Best Buy. I also have a ton of freelance checks coming in at the moment, so that baby will be paid off quick.

Trust me, a lot of are are far from rich. My PM did break the bank, but it'll be worth it to my work in the long run and it will pay for itself.

yea well min wage in virginia is $5.75

I know people whose first big purchase after getting the "grown up" job are $200 dollar sunglasses, new houses, cars, boats, etc. For me it was a G5. Before then I was saving up money and taking advantage of the edu discount for a Blue and White G3 (which I really needed for school, the interpreter I was using was so slow on my mac at the time it was driving me crazy).

I've only ever worked in retail but have paid for all my computers myself. My secret is that I keep an eye out on deals (most of the Macs I've owned were secondhand -- ie, forums, eBay, etc.) and I sell my old setups to recoup as much as I can to put towards the next computer. I just sold my 12" 1.5 PB for $1200 and then used part of it for my MBP. However, I found out that my MBP is really unreliable (I'm just one, not saying that everybody is having these problems) and had some extra cash to get a used iBook with BT and AE for $600. Now I'm trying to get rid of the MBP and get as much back as I can. I lose a little bit here and there but I'll eventually use what I make towards the next rev MBP (or even an MB) whenever that comes out. Oh, and ING Direct savings accts are my friends.

man, if you're making 150 a week and you're a 16 year old, i cannot believe you're complaining about how hard it is to save up...

i'm 16, i make a good deal less than you (although probably still a solid 4 to 5 grand a year) doing freelance tech support, and it was not a big deal for me to save up for my powerbook when i wanted to buy it...

i mean, come on, 150 dollars a week is almost 8 grand a year.. a macbook's only an eighth of your yearly income, AND you're a 16 year old high school student with no bills to pay!

i can't believe you can say it's because of "rich parents" that people here have expensive stuff: everything in my sig i paid for entirely myself, and with the exception of the iBook it's all been purchased in the past year and a half.

You should feel lucky. ;) jk....

In kansas, minimum wage is only 5.15. Sure there's differences b/c of different economies, cost of living, etc, but computers cost the same for everyone. :p

every thing i own, ive bought with my own money. tv, 5.1, xbox, dvds, xbox games, ibook, cell phone, cloths, futon etc etc. im 19 and just graduating from high school, and im working in the IT department at a local chemical company. i make $8 an hour, and i love my job. but like every one has said, save your money. it adds up fast. just watch. ive got about $600 from graduation. and my first paycheck should be about 600, for two weeks work. my current goal is to buy a zx-6r ninja. i plan to walk into the dealer with $8k, not a penny more, and tell them how it is. i think they will see how it is with 80 fresh 100 dollar bills in front of them :p.

you might also think about investing. sure the stock market is fine, but i mean in stuff you buy. i built my self a gaming computer a year ago. it cost me about $1000 to buy every part. i bought a part every week with my paycheck from my last job. i sold it about 5 months later to a guy for 800. then i bought this ibook i have now. i had a investment, that i could sell anytime, and i used it and had $800 cash in my hands within 24 hours. alot of my friends do this. they buy stuff, and then sell it for more, or as much as they bought it for. a friend of mine bought a car for 2500, and got a sound system for it for $800. the thing is, the sound system is worth 2000 at least. he knew a guy that needed money fast for school so he got a good deal there. he is now going to sell the car and system for $4k. not a bad investment if you ask me.

hope i helped, and didn't confuse you.
