I use SD cards all the time, and this is a great feature. Everything I use is SD, USB or Firewire so this is fine.

As for the non-removable battery. How many of you swap batteries (own more than 1 and charge one whilst using the other)? I don't know anyone who does that.

If the battery is dead, ok, it needs replacing, but that is still possible with the new design. OK, so it isn't as simple, but for a job you do maybe once every 2 years or more, it's fine.

So I'm all for it if it results in a simpler, cleaner, lighter design. Now it is truly "Unibody".

I would have enjoyed the non-replaceable battery, as I never remove mine. I also feel that if they're marketing these Macs for professionals, adding the SD card slot was a good option. I'm still laughing at all of those people who told me, "there's no room."

Of course there was room, but it required removing the more useful ExpressCard slot!

No expresscard slot...aargh

As an audio professional the exclusion of the expresscard slot on the 15" is a disaster, and NO i don't want to lug a 17" around!
Can't you buy SD xpresscard units!!!
Very bad call IMHO. We need Firewire, for hard drives and for audio interfaces, BUT NOT on the same buss, so express slot vital!
Obviously audio peeps are only 1% of users!!!!

you should laugh at yourself....they removed the expresscard for the sd...

i feel like SD Card cheapens it...
looks like a PC with all that redundant dust slots. i mean.. for me... i couldnt care less about SD Card slot :)

I think I'd rather have the expresscard over the built in SD-reader. At least with the expresscard, I have the option of purchasing a memory card reader, among other peripherals. I do envy the 7-hour battery life, though. I don't need it and am very happy with my 2.53 UMBP. Now I can feel special that I have a 512MB 9600GT card in here.. haha.

If they were going to put in a card reader, they should have at least put in a multi-card reader! CF, SD, xD, memory stick and whatever else you can think of.

Agreed. I think they missed the boat with his one. Had they put in a multi-card reader they would have been satisfying the consumer and the pro alike.
But... isn't it called a Macbook Pro? So, shouldn't it cater to the pro?

Non-removable battery is fine with me.

I really don't like the fact that they rebranded the 13" to a Macbook Pro. Why did they do this? Just because they added firewire back to it and gave it bigger hard drives?

Also, I don't like that they are advertising a "price drop" on the 15" pro when all they did was add a 15" with no dedicated GPU. The real MBP 15" is still the same price (with the 9400 integrated and the 9600 dedicated).

I think they should've renamed the whole line of laptops:

13" Whitebook - Macbook Stu (for student)
13" and 15" Unibody with 9400 graphics - Macbook Con (for consumer)
15" and 17" Unibody with 9400 and 9600 - Macbook Pro

Haha!

i'm more concerned about user-serviceability of the hdd/ssd. the non-removable battery better not preclude drive swapping ...

The hard drive should be user replaceable. It was on the first generation unibody 17 so these new ones should not be any different. As far as the express card slot I only used it for additional usb to power a hard drive so no big loss since the usb ports are together. I still will not buy the glare book pro. apple needs to solve that problem in the 15.

but, as i understand it, they're NOT user-replaceable on the new 17"s with the non-removable battery. and i would imagine the new 15"s would be the same. i hope i'm wrong ...

*clutches his mbp tightly*. I really will have to buy AppleCare for this thing after all. SD card slot for an express card slot, lack of a removable batt, lack of a matte screen option and integrated graphics in a 'pro' notebook...really?

The Canon EOS 1DS MKIII uses SDHC and CF I/II. CAnt get much more pro than the IDS -3

Express slots are keck.

SD cards are used in camera's.

I NEVER use my express slot.

I ALWAYS use my camera.
