I don't necessarily think the closer you are to a server the faster the connection because don't cell phones have to go through a mess of towers and whatnot to get you somewhere? Isn't that why when I look up my location by IP in LA it says I'm in Doylestown, PA?

Anyway, here are my results, best and worse:

And the rest, closest to furthest:
..Los Angeles, CA - 0.96Mbps Down
…..San Diego, CA - 1.39Mbps Down
.…….San Jose, CA - 1.34Mbps Down
San Francisco, CA - 1.22Mbps Down
.……...Seattle, WA - 1.61Mbps Down
.……..Kalispell, MT - 1.42Mbps Down

I get a whopping 110 kbps down, 6 kbps up. And yes, that's 3G. I bought a new netbook a few days ago and it came with a Verizon card and a 3 day pass to try it out. So I did. On average, it was 10 times faster than AT&T around here. In addition...well, I stopped using the iPhone for phone calls and just use the landline. If my wife's on the phone I pop the sim card into my Fuze which can at least hold a call longer than 2 or 3 minutes. I think there's an excellent chance I'm dumping AT&T when my contract runs out in June.

It's still a ridiculous restriction. Shame on Apple for implementing it. A little less shame on AT&T. ;)

Apple said it was for any carrier's network consideration.

Well, Apple put that in their software, yes, but I'm 99.95% sure that it's because AT&T asked them to do it.

Otherwise, why would Apple care? They have NO reason to restrict that for their own purposes.

Wrong. Yes they have reasons, which ones we don't know besides any carrier's network congestion they gave out before. AT&T did not pressure Apple to do so, in fact AT&T told iPhone users that because of the restriction, AT&T was throwing in all +40,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots to help users download their stuff.

Oh I am, I am paying for 10+ dropped calls a day, slow network speeds, and no service in my apartment on campus. I am definitely getting my money's worth.

Enough with this throwing out stupid exaggerated numbers when talking about AT&T. "Oh i get 50000 dropped calls a year on AT&T"

Really? Do you? Do you sit there with a pen and paper and tally every time you have a dropped call? Grow up

Yes, I have restored, and upgraded many times. It's just AT&T's network and the fact the reception doesn't penetrate our apartment's walls that leads to bad service. It's just a rough spot I guess in AT&T's network. If you look on their map for coverage, we're the little blue spot that has nothing for coverage lol.

Very likely a hard spot to reach. Don't worry, many users here have reported AT&T setting up new towers where they live.

I know here someone that was given a new 3G tower on Christmas day 1/4 mile from his area. That's 7.2Mb/s 3G mind you.

Meh, I highly doubt that. AT&T doesn't really care too much in my opinion at least for the smaller cities. Their focus is mainly on San Francisco and New York where millions of people reside not cities like San Luis Obispo where only 50,000 people live and almost half of them are college students.

I'm getting 2.0 Mbps in a spot where last year this time I could barely get a signal inside on my EDGE phone. I have my criticisms of AT&T, but those people are working to improve the network.

One person intrigued me on the thought of ditching an iPhone for a T-Mobile phone for calling and an iPad for fun. The T-Mobile plan had like 1,000 minutes and unlimited SMS for $40/month. Buy a $15 data plan for the iPad and you're saving a bunch per month if that's all the data you use.

Agreed, but you never know if AT&T is working for you until you see your speeds flare up. Believe me, AT&T is working, they just don't tell you, hey we are working! And very likely you don't see them (they work at night mostly).

my upload and download are terrible compared to all of yours

AT&T really should point this stuff out. The government is smart enough to put up "your tax dollars at work" signs, as well as "paid for by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act" signs in the past year. AT&T should have some Web site that shows where new towers have been put, new spectrum added, 7.2 speed added, etc. Makes you feel better when your $115/month is taken out.

Then I couldn't agree more. Side note, the government puts those signs because if they don't some people will ask "what are they doing with my money". On AT&T however, people don't ask because its a company and private.

 Ah, of course. You're right and I'm wrong because of [unknown invisible reason]. Why didn't I think of that?

So? You're saying that if the 10 MB restriction was AT&T's idea then they couldn't put in Wifi spots? Why not? You neglected to explain how that would happen.

What's wrong with AT&T making the request and putting in Wifi spots? That seems impossible to you?

Pretty sad overall. Oh I also tried to update an app and I got an error that said it was over 10 Meg so I would either have to connect to wifi or update it through itunes on my computer. How bogus is it that $30/month data fee won't even let you update an app using 3g?

I can see kinda where they're comming from cause some apps on the appstore are 300 and 500mb plus. Also when you get an update for Navigon or Tomtom for example its a 1.3GB file so you dont want to try to update it thru 3G.
But it should definetelly be more than 10mb max. Maybe a 100mb limit or something.

Yeah it'll probably take forever to download a 1GB+ update on 3G but they should not block you from doing it since you're paying for it.

I dont think its practical and could cause network problems if everyone started downloaded a huge update like that as soon as it hit the appstore. Limits like that are there to protect the network and also all other subscribers that try to use 3G for simple email and websurfing. Also not only it could take over 6-8 hours to try to do it thru 3G most likelly your battery will not last while having to leave the screen on and the download will fail. So you will lose your time, cause extra network traffic and kill your battery.
And most of the people wont think twice about how many MB's its an update and how long it will take they will just hit update and then complain not knowing why it didnt go thru.
Gotta be reasonable, we're not talking about a home internet connection here. Its a cellphone.

Here is my most recent speed test, Pasadena CA. w/ iP4

Wow I feel spoiled, Depending where I am in my house I can get 2mbps - 4mbps (I know my room get the best speeds ;)) But if I go outside I an get 5-6mbps easily, Fastest ive ever gotten was 6.92mbps. and my upload is almost always 1mbps. Service has gotten alot better, data speeds used to be about 1.5 - 3mpbs.

This is what I typically see with Verizon.

My buddy with an AT&T iPhone 4 will constantly get between 3-4mb down in the same area.

However there is a very obvious coverage difference in my area he will get dropped calls quite often while I rarely do.

Check out this dbm

It's hard for me too say which carrier I'd prefer but I am on the phone for work quite often.
