I was surprised to read that Perdue chicken co. and some other huge meat processors closed dozens of factories. I wouldn't have thought big big businesses like those would close because of illegals.
Forgive me if I've misunderstood, but wasn't the walkout supposed to be of "immigrants" in general, not just illegal immigrants?

I have no idea whether Perdue employs illegal immigrants or not. I'm just saying that if all of the legal immigrants skipped work today, I can imagine that affecting Perdue's ability to, you know, do whatever it is that they do in the Chicken genre.

I believe the premise was for anyone in support of this cause (whatever that may be) -- illegal or otherwise.

 yikes, I thought I read illegals, but you are right... just immigrants.

However, the rallies are in response to the recent crackdowns on illegal immigration.

I think that's where I got confused. Even though this poll shows that not everyone was affected, I think in the long run we would all feel if all immigrants, legal or not, stopped working for a month.

I'm at school right now, right in front of Civic Center/UN Plaza (SF) and its getting a little crowded.

CBS (Channel 5) just showed up. Helicopters everywhere.

Oh.

Nevermind

It goes all the way to the end as far as I know. I work near the Embarcadero and its plenty loud.

Kinda glad I take BART home, I'd hate to wait for a bus to try to navigate through that crowd.

Sigh. I have a response to that, but it is probably tippy-toeing up to the political line. ;)

No change noticed by me.

Although, I have been at college all day.
Same here. Finished my first and only class of the day. I'm sure if I went down town I'd notice stuff.

Edit: Well, my class ended at 11am

I haven't even noticed....then again, I live in a tiny redneck town where the hicks living here would probably force anyone who isn't a fellow white trash redneck out of town and would almost certainely never hire an immigrant, illegal or not

Its probably having a bigger impact back home in St. Louis. But here in Rolla, MO, where the only immigrants who could stand to live in this town are the ones whos accents make them sound like Boomhauer, there's no effect whatsoever.

This thread has been shockingly civil!:p

Freeway traffic N of LA was super-light and many of my co-workers appear to have caught something very contagious over the weekend and are out sick or are otherwise consipicuously absent.

There were a lot of people absent from my school today and there is a huge rally near my house and at my brother's school, he said there were only 4 people in his class (out of about 20!)

Yes, and in the interest of keeping it that way I'll just keep my thoughts on this to myself. Although I'm having to seriously bite my tongue in order to do that. :D

The one thing that I've noticed, to my irritation, is that the internet seems to be running more slowly today. Must be all those folks staying home and getting online instead of being at work! LOL!

Seriously, I really haven't been affected because I haven't been out yet today -- going out this evening with friends so we'll see if we run into any situations or closed restaurants and the like....

I was just up at UCSC where they've shut down the shuttle system (and some of the the city bus drivers are striking?) to show support. A ton of teachers cancelled classes because so many of the students would have a really hard time getting to class... so my ride back over the hill happened later than it might otherwise have. Other than that, haven't noticed anything else.

OKOKOKOK. I was trying too hard to keep the title from being political. I failed. I'm sorry. Forgive me. I'm such a failure....

Anyway, I have to echo how much I appreciate the civil nature of this thread. I think to get a flavor of how the day goes (in my very unscientific poll and comments), it has to stay out of the "Angry Forum.":p
