Most of my friends have an iPhone so I love the feature and hope they work on it more and possibly expand on it...

I went from 1000+ texts a month to ~150 or so as the majority of the people I know have an iPhone.

I use iMessage to text people overseas and that's one of the best features that come out of the box for me, since most of my relatives are in HK, they use whatsapp since its a craze there, but some of them do use iPhones and I'd rather use iMessage then install whatsapp if they have the ability to use iMessage. Some people who I also know overseas have an iPhone and before we spoke via texting, it would've been done all through Facebook, but now we can talk anywhere without the hassle of logging into Facebook, and I'm very graduate that they added this feature, since I feel like I'm a lot closer to some of those friends who have moved away or family members I don't see very often.

That's why I also love mountain lions iMessage client, instead of going back and forth via my phone and mac, I can't just reply on the client. That's why it has replace whatsapp for me now, and I also like sending free pictures that I take without the cost of sending a mms. Like sending them pictures of the snow or the fields, something my oversea friends or family might have not seen in a while or ever...

I've stuck with the old $5/200 text message plan on AT&T due to iMessage so it's been very useful.

I would love it if it was a multi platform service. It's the primary chat service I use to talk to the mrs, but we both have iPads and Android phones. Would be good if the Android phones could access the service too.

I have unlimited sms so have iMessage turned off as it eats into my data usage in addition to the fact I hardly ever text communicate with another iPhone user.

I send 99.9% of my texts through Talkatone. I always tell people to send text messages to my google voice number/email and not my cell phone.

I love iMessage!! Delivered and read receipts are nice. The girlfriend just got an iPhone 4 aswell so being able to send iMessages to her is nice.

Completely irrelevant as I use Google Voice. Why does it matter to you? Use what works for you.

Never used BBM on my BB's either.

Google Voice is not a replacement for SMS until 1. it supports MMS and 2. it supports group messaging. Without those two features, it's not even a debatable replacement.

80-85% of my family members and friends have iPhones. iMessage sees more usage on my phone than the "Phone" itself. iMessage is how I communicate with my family members overseas as well.

As someone way above said, iMessage and iCloud have been incredibly useful for me, and make it the obvious choice to stay with iOS. Basically everyone I know has finally made the transition to an iPhone so I don't have to deal with sending texts and people not getting them (basically everywhere without 3/4G has wifi, and more importantly, when I buried in the depths of hell at university I can still be reached. I also love that it's implemented so seamlessly over-top of normal texts (using a different app for different people seems stupid). It also seriously cut down on the hassle it used to be to text people in China/Germany for me which is awesome.

Not of any use to me at all.
Do have friends with iPhones, but my contract (as with most UK ones I beleive) has unlimited texts. That way I can send as many, or as long a message as I want without imessage.

All imessage gives then is a little "delivered" message, which I see little use in as never had an issue with normal messages not being delivered.

Still, I have no issue it being there, fair play to have more features.

It's been very useful to me. I got rid of my (limited) texting plan because 95% of the people I was texting have iPhones. And since I can use it as much as I want for free, I'm able to text more often now, which is often more convenient, especially when I'm at work. Sure, there's been a few times when it's a little temperamental, but overall it's been great. I'm willing to put up with an occasional bump in the road to save $10 every month. And for the occasions when I really need a message to go through and iMessage isn't working, I can still send a text and it's still cheaper than paying for an actual texting plan.

It's not very important to me. Most people I know have Androids and Blackberries, plus I tend to use IM a lot with people.

100% awesome. I have family in Europe and Canada and now we SMS like crazy, pics, videos, etc as if they lived in the US

No, you'd still be limited to the standard 160 characters... you could just send more of them.

There are certainly times when having no limit on how much you can send in one message is a huge benefit, but, more often than not, I simply enjoy not having to type in the typical text shorthand.

It would be if 1.) I had anything to text anyone about and 2.) if any of my friends had iPhones..

It certainly isn't a necessity for me, but there are some nicer features. The best thing about it is there is no character limit limit on texts. I don't have to worry about a message being broken into multiple pieces because it has exceeded the character limit. Could I live without it? Certainly.

In iMessages for Mac we have the option to log into AIM, GTalk, etc. If we get this in iOS I will change my tune on iMessages. It will be indispensable.

I work on the lower level (basement) of my building so I don't get cell service, but I get WiFi, so its very important to me (to not feel completely isolated).

I wouldn't say that it's important, but moreso a convenience considering a nice portion of my people own iPhones.

do your text messages go overseas at no additional expense? or when the cellular network goes down?

HUH? SMS reliable? more so than iMessage? please explain

iMessage has had some problems for various users. Some messages aren't received. Some messages are received on one device but not others. I haven't heard an extremely recent complaints, so maybe the majority of these issues have been fixed, but when it launched there were definitely plenty of complaints.
