Why are you obsessed with the size? :D

The current font size is ok with me. A little bit bigger would be better. I do CAD, programming, 3D. I travel often and want a lightweight mobile workstation. The speed of my 2012 rMBP 15" is acceptable. I don't know the reason. I had the MBP 17" for a few years. It was not so heavy to me. When I first touched the rMBP 15". It was light. Now, it seems to be heavier. The Speck case shouldn't add much weight.

So, if there is a laptop of the same performance as the current rMBP 15", has larger screen (more desktop estate), has similar or better battery life and lighter, I would want to buy it.

Won't happen. Nobody bought them when they made them the first time. They're just too damned big.
Too big and too expensive. Not seeing it happening.

Will people please stop saying the 17" was too big?

Look at PC Laptops. Most people like big laptops, it's just that it had the starting price of the Mac Pro($2500) when the only advantage it had over the $500-$700 cheaper 15" MBP was the screen, a few ports and mildy faster processor. Even still you could BTO the same exact specs in the 15" model.

Like I said, allot of people like big laptops. I make computer recommendations for people all the time, and 80% of time when it comes to laptops people tell me they want at least a 17" or bigger laptop.

Considering that the retina 15" STARTS at $2200, a 17" would cost a small fortune. No one would buy it.

And no, before the 17" fanboys jump in this thread and attack, a bunch of enthusiasts on a mac forum isn't a good representation of the actual sales of 17" MBPs. If you were to go off this forum alone about the world, it would seem like everyone in the world has a $2000 iMac and a $2000 retina Macbook.

Slim to none. Simple supply and demand, Apple probably wasn't selling enough 17" to warranty keeping that size.

I expect to see a Haswell based MBPr that will dwarf the Alienware 18" notebook and weigh less than 1 pound.

Maybe if they want to take back the "most pixels" crown from Samsung, they'll make a 17" 3360x2100 rMBP.

I don't get it.

It wasn't that much bigger-

And a 17" would be more room for cats to sit on!

Do you think it will make something bigger than the 15" rMBP in a year or so?

Definitely! The next generation of iMacs will most likely be bigger than the 15" rMBPs, and the rumored Apple iTV will probably around 40+"! Though that may not be within a year...

Seriously though, I think Apple stopped producing the 17" because it wasnt doing well compared to the other two models. I think a 17" retina would appeal to a lot of people as a computer itself, but honestly, I had trouble justifying the price of the the 15" rMBP I bought, I couldnt even imagine how much a 17" one would be. I could see them going $2700 to $2900 for the low end model and probably somewhere aroung $3400 for the higher end model. I personally dont expect many people buying a 17" Macbook for that price, even with extreme power behind it.

What's logical about making the same mistake again? Apple has "exited" the high-end laptop market because they couldn't sell what they considered "high end". They are a general consumer company now.

The Mac Pro will keep them relevant (at least in their minds) with a small niche of specialist-users but it will cost plenty.

i meant its not logical for Apple to start making laptops you can upgrade yourself.

thought the long__________________ was understandable.

I would say people who own a 15"rMB are the "enthusiasts" - I happen to own one, for me they are really quite a beauty to 'look at' but that is about it. I can only do light to medium work on her, while most of my production is thoroughly completed with my 17"MBP, she is the only one I get the most done around my business. The iMAC is great for the kids.

They should bring back the 17"MBP in all her new glory because it isn't about size, it is about what it represents: Integrity, Productivity, Professionalism, Powerful, Portable, Upgradeable and most importantly Longevity. This is the standard set by the 17"MBP when she was first introduced.

Though it appears this giant company wants to take our power away and not allow us to upgrade and fix our own machines, we have to take this power back, less people are actually falling for the 15"rMB than we think, their best selling notebook is still the current 13"MBP and 15"MBPs because people love to be the drivers of their own creativity/business. You take that away from the people + the 17"MBP and you'll have a lot of unhappy and very loyal customers jump ship. But I wont jump, I stand my ground and I want something user upgradable and customizable, fixable and durable. Nothing in the MS/PC world can satisfy, so I stay loyal to this creative, innovative company. I demand user upgradability !!! It is a moral thing for me, you can't take that away from me big shiny red fruit company you!

Give me back my right to choose !

This company is capable of making anything happen, those who keep making the same loopy excuses think small business thinking, stop it! Really! This is a giant company, they can make a new 17"MBP that will blow all of your minds and expectations, surprising you speechless, this is technology we're talking about - I just don't see any limits. So I'm putting my money there.

That is the last word. All 8800 dollars of my word on the table, until this mother of all notebooks is back!

17"MBP sounds so nice on the tongue.

(Fangurl out).

I hope the 17" comes back, it was for the prosumers, not consumers and I know a lot of proffesionals that do not know what to do now that it is gone.

Portable desktops are on the rise, more than ever.. people do not sit stationairy anymore, people want performance on-the-go, and right now the current MacBook Pro "15 is "limited" (i'll get flamed to death by this, but this is my opinion, deal with it) in terms of performance, especially when it comes to graphics and storage.
Portable desktops on the rise? Based on what?

As for notebooks, the only growth is in smaller screens (ultrabooks, tablets). There is nothing but collapsing sales for large notebooks. The issue of the "limited" performance on the 15" would apply equally to the 17" version.

I can only do light to medium work on her, while most of my production is thoroughly completed with my 17"MBP, she is the only one I get the most done around my business.
Why? The retina is hands-down more powerful.

Poetic, but entirely arbitrary. A 17" MacBook Pro wouldn't fulfill those ideals any more than a 15" model does.

Sure they could, but why would they?

Apple killed the 17" MBP. Do you think it will make something bigger than the 15" rMBP in a year or so?

Yes. It will be called the iMac.

Will they introduce a larger-than-15-inch laptop?

Yes. Right after they license OS X to Samsung and switch Macs to run Windows exclusively.

The 17-inch MBP was a minuscule part of a small part of Apple's business.

If Apple resurrected the 17-inch MacBook Pro, I would have a really difficult time keeping my credit card in my wallet. I love my 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro. It's getting long in the tooth though and I'm very close to needing to replace it. Shame it's no longer offered.

I am just curious, did Apple release sales figures by the SKU model during the past year?

I don't think so.

Apple didn't dropped the 17" because of retina display production issues. Then why not keep selling it with a normal display, just like they do with the 13" and 15"???

It is pretty obvious that sales figures where really low. Not making it up for production costs.

Maybe they could make a limited production, high-end 17" rMBP every 2-3 years. That way they would be able to charge whatever they asked for.

As far as I recall, the laptop I got about 20 years ago cost around $3400. If they can make a 17" rMBP, I have no complain.

Yes. Some kind of limited production to remember Steve.
