The question is, why didn't Apple upgrade to these specs during the latest update?

And no, the answer, "Because they didn't have to" is not how Apple got to where it is today. If Apple continue down that path they'll find themselves at rock bottom rather soon.

APPLE won't give up $199/$299 pricing anytime soon. Some people seem to think APPLE should pack everything latest out there into their new iPhone and still sell at $199/$299.

Yes, but the Nokia N85 came out around this time LAST YEAR.

Apple had a full year to match it's specs, and it still used weaker hardware/a worse screen.

So what? They don't have to match jack. Go get the N85 if it pleases you.

But it is not about that.
Collecting a grab bag of features, and cramming them into a device is how the phone industry has been evolving since its inception.

The trends in mobile phones have been to add features year on year. They create a newer device, with more features and higher specifications.

What's next. An 1080p OLED screen? A 12 megapixel camera with optical zoom? Not one but two removable batteries?

This has been the standard way to sell your latest mobile phone.

Unless something disruptive happens. Unless a company comes along and identifies that typical phone customers hardly ever used these features. You ignore the hardware arms race and turn it into a *software* arms race and suddenly everything turns on its head.

They've given it up in the UK - the new iPhone is 87% more expensive.

O2 claim that Apple are charging them more than last year (though granted, having contradicted themselves on that).

I would not know how thing are in other countries, but I believe APPLE will stick to $199/$299 for some time in US.

If y'all are complaining about price NOW, THEN if the iPhone got ALL of that, I HIGHLY DOUBT we'll see a 199/299 subsidized pricing! More like 399/499 subsidized.

Nokia has always been ahead of everyone when it comes to cell phones.

And NO other phone on any US carriers specs are that good either. I don't think AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or Alltel have any phones with specs that good!

Apple won't be giving us all of that until 5th or 6th generation at most.

Probably next refresh. This is why I believe the 3GS was such a small bump. Compared to what Apple could have put in this year, and what they probably will next, the S is simply a small bump. As I've said before, dual core ARM Cortex A9 processors, another ram boost, new gpu and OLED screen next year. :D

PLEASE don't count on it. You know damn well Apple doesn't give us consumer all the things we want. Hell, it took 3 iPhones just to get MMS. We wanted that since the first one.

Not a single Apple device ever made EVER has and no Apple device in the future ever WILL be the leader in hardware specifications.

Apple hardware is inferior to everything else in every product they make. No secret there.
Actually you're wrong.
Did you forget about the Apple I, Apple II, Macintosh, iMac, newton, iPod, iPod Touch and yes of course the iPhone. all had in some form cutting edge technology. Also back in the day the PPC G3 and G4 out performed intel's pentium II. So quite the opposite to your post apple has in the past shown the ability to be a market leader in embracing new technology and applying it in such away that makes it extremely easy for the consumer.

....yes but notice that when they were doing that, they were too expensive and only a small segment of the market had their products. Nowadays, they have basically the same philosophy (provide cool tech that's stylish, just works and easy to use), but at lower prices. But to get those lower prices, means sacrificing the latest tech (that's why the iMacs don't have i7's & Blu-Ray) in them yet.

But if you're that bent on having the latest tech and bragging rights on a phone few people will have, use and develop apps for, by all means, leave.

Yeah, upgrading to that top-of-the-line mobile processor and GPU and providing a brand-new OS update chock-full of new features was such a lazy thing to do.

I'm not saying the N85 is the perfect phone, not even close. I opted to get iPhone 3GS over it because of Apple's fantastic interface.

But in terms of hardware, Apple is behind the competition by a few years, and that just makes me sad.

Because if the iPhone did utilize cutting edge hardware, it would be the perfect phone, bar none.

Oh really? Cause the N85 has superior hardware does it?

Let's see here.

N85

CPU: ARM11 369 MHz
RAM: 78MB

2.6" screen @ 240x320 resolution
Lack of hardware acceleration

Yeah, its hardware is superior.

Some of you people need to do some research before spewing out garbage. Good thing I'm getting payed to waste my time on here.

Yeah, I'm sure you speak for all of Apple's customers, I wonder why the iphone has the highest satisfaction rates in the industry despite Apple not giving customers what they want.

LOL next when somebody introduces a 20 megapixel cameraphone, we will have people complaining why Apple doesn't have one. The iphone has advantages and disadvantages over other phones, get what suits your needs.

What competition?

Sure, Samsung and some other manufacturers have OLED displays on their phones.

But look at the Palm Pre. That's the latest hot phone that's not an iPhone, and it's hardware specs are nearly identical to the 3G S.

So they're doing fine with the real competition.

For comparison sake, a Nokia N95 compared to a Samsung INNOV8 with OLED screen in bright sunlight:

OLED screens are oh so incredible

Yes, OLED screens are better because they use less energy, but all the other atributes the threadstarter wishes to grant them are just not there. I'd rather be able to read my screen in the sun. But that's just me ;)

I can't really comment on the camera, since its doubtful Apple will ever be competitive with the likes of Samsung and Sony Ericsson who are both currently bringing 12mp phones to the market.

As for the OLED screen - I agree that its beautiful to look at. BUT only indoors. Outdoors the screen washes out so badly you can't see the screen at all. I had an N85 and I know this from experience. OLED makes for a gorgeous screen, but only in decent lighting conditions. I'm not sure Apple will ever release an OLED display on their phones/ipods if its sunlight legibility is next to nothing.

Well I am a first and second generation iPhone owner, and MOST people have been complaining about MMS since first generation.

How long until Nokia can match the iPhone's usability and user satisfaction?

I think it could be a while.

The iPhone's real advantage is Cocoa, which used to be called NeXTStep.
NeXTStep took quite a long time to put together.

Nokia have a bit of a problem.
They know Symbian is stagnating, and want to jump ship to a Linux based OS. (which will help them a bit). But they can't say that out loud.

Commercially, Nokia need to do something as radical as Palm has done. But like the fabled supertanker, Nokia is a little to large to do a U Turn.

Did you see the video of NeXTSTEP 3? That was quite advanced for the time. Very interesting.
