After following Apple for a long time, I'd take a guess and say it will be a while for custom watch faces, Apple has only recently started allowing developers to create 3rd party extensions (keyboards and such) but that was after quite a few generations of iOS. They will probably add a few in-house faces with the next AW hardware release, but probably won't allow 3rd party faces until they have enough metrics on how often people switch their watch face. Mine pretty much stays on modular, but I'm with you on wanting custom watch faces.

Apple like to control thing, specially control thing could create more revenue. There will be more watch face from Apple, but I doubt Apple will allow 3rd party watch face, free for all design style. Because the 1st 3rd party watch face I could see coming is cloned Hermes watch face, or look alike. That will not be good for Apple's revenue.

Why do Apple want to kill it's one of biggest revenue margin source for high end non-gold-watch fashion buyer now?

TVDinner, how much money do you and your fellow entrepreneurs expect to make from custom AW faces?

You've posted mockups before saying, "This is one example we've up with."
(really not hard to find this post, TBH)

This thread smells like grasstroturfing to me.

Hermes, or Seiko, or Rolex, or TAG Heuer, or Hublot, or ....

Yeah, every time I see Android Wear owners posting up unoriginal "homage" faces pretending that their Moto360 or LG R is a TAG Aquaracer or whatever, I just shake my head. Why copy an established brand when you have the opportunity to be creative and come up with something totally new?

Does anyone honestly believe these faked smartwatch faces were approved by the original manufacturers?

Does anyone else think Apple wants to open up such a door to copyright fraud and dull unoriginality?

I could see Bermes, Rermes, Permes, Hemes.... with same/similar graphic design coming, once 3rd party watch face is allow.

I really want to see more watch faces available but right now I'd be happy is they just allowed complications on the custom photo face.

Where are the 3rd party watch dial / faces apps FOR Apple Watch?
When is Apple going to allow this?!

I know there are many threads on this forum about this topic.
But at this point it is getting pretty ridiculous.

I know at last 10 people who have sold their Apple watches due to the lack of dial/face options.

WHERE ARE THE APPS FOR THE APPLE WATCH like the "Watch Faces for Android Wear" by Intellicom that is available for the Moto 360 and Android devices?? This app is incredible and there are THOUSANDS of options that grow every day.

We have NO realistic watch dial options for our Apple Watch and it is maddening.

I know i am not the only person who feels this way.

We have sent in feedback on the Apple Website with no response.
There are multiple threads on this site and MANY others - with no response.

I LOVE my Apple Watch but exactly how long do we wait or are forced to look at other options?

Why don't you kindly post some watch face pics you think are so great, or links to them. Then we can judge if they are beautiful enough to get you all wound up over.

I tried the moto 360 before hopping to an apple watch and noticed a lot of fashion brands already have watch faces ready to be loaded for android.

Would be awesome if apple made it possible to customize the apple watch UI

How many of those were authorized and/or created by those fashion brands?

I think you misunderstand me. The *majority* of watch faces on Android watches *are* terrible. There are some really great ones but many more terrible ones. We see the same with the app store. It's just the nature of the situation.

I have to agree I even did a Google search of the best Android watch faces and all of them were awful.

I'm actually very happy with the current selection of watch faces with Utility being my favorite and I just recently changed that face in almost a year of owning my watch.

@ BarracksSi - Ha ha. I absolutely AM NOT working on an app or anything like that. So if the "wording" of some of my mock up posts made it seem that way that is in error. I have no idea how to write apps, lol. I do enjoy playing with Photoshop and have made a few mock up images, nothing more.

And to the person who asked about dials or faces I like, there are literally THOUSANDS available for Android and many from the "Watch Faces for Android Wear" app from a company called Intellicom . There are MANY with exact watch dials and then tons more with images, etc.

This is not about what I like. It is about having options, which we currently do not have, but other smart watches DO have.
[doublepost=1460256801][/doublepost]There are 14 THOUSAND watch face options on this one Android app and going up - http://androidwatchface.com/faces

Again the point is NOT which you (or I) think are good or not. The point is having the options available.

And there are multiple 3rd party companies with smartwatch dial / face apps. Multiple companies...

I posted a link above to one of the many 3rd party app companies for Android. See my comments in that response. Thanks.

From the looks of the ones in the link he provided, swarlos is right -- most of them are trash.

Two of the three faces in the first row are, as I've said, unoriginal -- one's a barely modified copy of a Seiko SKX007, and another looks like a Timex sport digital with a cracked crystal.

The rest are near-homages, clumsily skeuomorphic, or just bad. There's even one made up as if Roy Lichtenstein designed a smartwatch face (never mind the fact that he's dead).

You might not like them, but others will. Every single person I know with a Moto 360 or similar loves those apps and the variety, which we have none (and I am not talking about changing the picture background)

Not using the name brand but the style of the faces of the pics I uploaded. Designers could alter to not violate copyrights. On Http://androidwatchface.com/faces/17801/a-dj-1--dial-black-arco-iris-1
There are:Rolex, Omega and other notable brands for purchase. How do they not worry about lawsuits?

The Apple Watch screen is such high quality this should be able to design.

I like an idea many watchface to custom for .
But It's not for Apple watch.
If anyone can use Tag connected watchface on Moto360, why Android wear should go for Tag ?

Agree with everything but the last statement. There's a reason. I guarantee you there's a reason they haven't done it yet. It's too obvious of an addition for them to have not thought about it at all.

Oh they've thought about it. Here's the collection of watch faces they released for the iPod nano in 2011 just before Jobs died:

For sure. This is an absolutely beautiful watch face on a Huawei watch. And it looks good on.

I'm hoping they can add a WatchFace Store into the Watch App, and get rid of the Discover tab. Then we could at least *buy* some 3rd party faces.

I just wish they'd release new faces as frequently as they release new straps/models for the Watch. I'd be OK with getting a couple of new faces every few months.

I'd even take a few new Apple faces every whole number update. And to be fair, Apple did give two new digital watch faces with watch OS 2.0. Never mind that both watch faces were revealed 18 months ago when Apple first announced the watch, then failed to deliver with the initial release 11 months ago.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should count those since they were initially revealed to be a part of AW and then mysteriously vanished, only to reappear for OS2. Also, the Photo face isn't really a face, just a picture that you took yourself with the time slapped on it.

I'll meet 'em half way— they've given us one new watch face since release.

I think they are still figuring out how just to go about it. Right now we have hyper accurate representation of time, so much so they use a special camera and measure the amount of time it takes to light the LCD pixels at an individual level to determine how fast or slow the seconds hand moves on say the Utility face. Until they have a developer kit that can match that precision and follow the same type of guidelines for watch face development as apps in store I don't think it's going to be released.
They know the desire is there, they know consumers want choice too it's just a matter of what is the best way to deliver that choice without ruining the product, it's look, or its function to the masses.
Just like I'm sure they are working on time sensitive and location aware watch faces too. The breadcrumbs are showing that there is a pretty nice loaf baking in Cupertino, and we are still on Gen1 device and what I would consider .2 of the first stable OS on the watch. (1.0-1.x might as well still held the beta monicker).

I think it would be awesome to be able to get 3rd party faces from a store or people could air drop it to your phone.
Seems like such an obvious thing to do even if Apple monopolizes the new watch faces and sells them on their store for $99-$2.99. They could easily rack up millions in pure profit. But what do I know.

Good comments and I could not agree more. The demand is absolutely there and would only enhance the Apple Watch. And for those few who dont want to use the custom face/dial options they would not have to and could just use the basic installed ones that we currently have. For each their own on their wrist.

One reason I'd like to see custom watch faces is simply so that I can read the time more easily. I shouldn't have to be stuck with the modular (i.e. non analog) type of faces in order to quickly read the time. I really struggle with the chronograph one in particular (the hands blend into the background) and some of these android watch faces not only look great but are easy to read. Unfortunately, I don't think custom faces will ever happen ( see my earlier post).
