Don't see it happening

I agree.

Apple's strength is with the home/student/media/casual user segments, not in business. Imagine if Apple pushed 'Numbers' onto its business clientele - now you can view each cell on your spreadsheet in coverflow.

In all seriousness, Windows handles the corporate environment fairly well and has a stranglehold in emerging markets, often where Apple products tend to carry a hefty premium.

While the mac platform remains prohibitively expensive - they will never have large growth.

Mr and Mrs Smith want a laptop to look at the internet, send emails, use Skype to see their kids in Australia and get photos off their camera. Do they spend £829 on a Macbook / £500 on a Mac Mini, or do they get a £400 Dell laptop or £349 desktop that, as far as they are concerned, does everything they need ( and they're right - it does )

Until Apple close that gap (and they may well feel they don't want to - to retain the 'premium' exclusive feel the brand has) - they will never see growth toward 50%

Doug

MICROSOFT IS DYING! People, you believe or not but thats the exact fact! Even I thought that Win has won but this BBC article really changed my view!

Microsoft faces huge opposition. Its front face, Gates, is now retired. It lost the Yahoo deal and continues to be thwarted by Google at internet! Its already losing its grip on the Mobile OS market with the advent of the iPhone and is set to lose much much more with the new corporate features in the 2.0 software! The next Mac os is speculated to be more for 'the business customer' and finally, every new product line that Microsoft has tried to set up in the last few years (eg: Zune, Surface Comp, etc) has failed miserably!

Its a golden chance for SJ. All he needs to do is just adjust certain policies of his and Mac OS will boom!

Win continues to use a 25 year old API. Macs are much more easy to develop for! People want elegance not some botched up senseless copied GUI

Ballmer has very tough years ahead of him and I guess Microsoft's gonna be another IBM in the next decade!

You know? It's people like Apple Ink that makes me hate my fellow mac users.

Microsoft is far from dying, and you should know that. Yes, Apple is growing, but you are delusional if you think Microsoft is dying. I'll give you the point of uncertainty now that Gates is gone, but it's not like they're running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Microsoft Income Before Taxes (in the last 3 months): $4.8 billion
Apple's Income Before Taxes (in the last 3 months): $1.5 billion

If you think that I'm such an Apple fanboy that Im saying this to forsee Apple's weakness, then its people like you who make me sick!!!

I never said all the above things to prove that APPLE'S WINNING. I ONLY SAID MSFT'S ACTUALLY DYING and that its successor will NOT BE APPLE BUT COMPANIES LIKE GOOGLE!!!

And when I say dying, people with Aids are also dying, but it takes them 40 years to actually die!

Why do you just comment without even trying to understand what the person is trying to say! Oh.... I get it. You see it like an oppurtunity to pick at anybody whos supporting Apple (when some people arent even doing that). I met a snooty person who picked at the people who tried to protest against GreenHouse effect. The guy labelled them 'tree hugger'. See the similarity!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Im just saying that this poll carries an otion : "win has already won". It clearly hasnt!!!

Was that comment really necessary?

OT- Windows will remain number one. I don't see that changing for a lot of reasons, most of which are mentioned here. They have their niche markets: creative fields (I'm in advertising and have never used a PC), education, and many sciences use them as well. Business- forget it. It's not going to happen.

OK agreed Mac os is not coming up and I fully for one agree on that! But my point is that dont expect that Win will be here for long as well!!!

What will replace it? Who knows... Nobody knew when IBM was at the top and people even then said that IBM couldnt be toppled but ultimately it was, by msft. Now Msft's gonna be toppled in next 5/10/15... yrs and we definitely cant say who. And we have an idea that it might NOT be Apple after all!

Windows 7

Hey, don't forget that Microsoft is building a new Windows (Windows 7) from scratch. They want to get rid of all the old stuff. You can still find Windows 3.1 programs in Windows XP. Maybe they get everything right with Windows 7 and become the new :apple:. ;)

You gave no evidence or even conjecture as to how/why MSFT is dying.

As to your other rants, they don't need to be responded to. When someone uses that many caps and angry smileys, you know the person is 13. So please, save us all the drama of your mock outrage. Go use Windows.

If Steve doesn't die and remains in charge at Apple it's possible. He is positioning the Iphone and Touch as the next de facto platform for this generation of computing device. The SDK is built on OS X, and represents an entry path for developers who might not otherwise move into working with Macs. I think in the next few years the software offering for Macs will get MUCH stronger, and assuming Apple doesn't once again f-up relations with developers, I think they may be able to take market dominance.

I think Apple can, and already is, making a good run at the personal market. I can't think of one person I've talked to about personal computers in the last two years who thinks Microsoft is on the rise.

In the next few years, I think people will have a Mac at home, but will settle for Windows at the office.

I think in general the marketshare of Linux, Mac OS, etc will overshadow Window (I'm not saying Microsoft will die) but I do believe there will be a shift of computers trends and Microsoft dominance will dwindle.

For instance the majority of people in my office are using Ubuntu for work instead of Windows with Office.

IMHO I'm not a "death to M$" person but consumers and industry need good viable choices for operating systems and applications and with the likes of Linux and Mac OS improving on each release things can only get better for the user.

I barely see Apple taking control of 25% of the market share let alone the majority of it. I hope Apple doesn't get any bigger - I don't want viruses.:(

The Windows OS, or it's successor, will never die. It is the choice of business, government and the military.

Mac OS will gain market share, but will never be the dominant OS.

Currently, Mac sales are up because of switchers -- we all know that. However, what we don't know is the number of switchers who still run Windows on their Macs via Bootcamp or with VMware/Parallels. If you take these numbers into account, the growth of the Mac OS market would be less -- if they are still using Windows. I hope this makes sense.

The key is software and developer support for a platform. The Mac OS is entering the area where development is getting accelerated. However, that doesn't mean that Windows software and development support is dying. It's still very much alive and kicking.

If only you would read. Mr "Physically 40 Mentally 12"

And I havent edited that comment up there to include these marks there. They were ALWAYS there since ages! [You can see there's no 'Edited by ..... at ..... time' mark!]

Macs will always be small, and I like it that way. :)

Yes my point exactly... Let MSFT lose but dont let Apple win! I like it that we're all a v small and special community livng in harmony (at least most of us:see above) and the rest of the world just stares!:D

Why do Mac users care if the Mac is the right choice for other people? (this question isn't posed specifically at you, but rather all of the people who made similar comments like this in this thread)

I agree I think 25% would be optimistic while 15% to 20% would be realistic.

No.. nothing like that! We all would love for Apple to flourish and become big (atleast most of us) but its just a small personal touch which makes me feel differnet. My bro, mom, dad all have win laptops/pc but Im the only one to own a Mac. Not only in my family but quite a lot of places! This, being different thing really makes me selfish!:p
