How long was your iPad in LANTAU ISLAND?

Mine sat on lantau island for nearly 5 days, however it is arriving the day that fedex said it would, which is the day after it left lantau island. It doesnt take long to get from the island to you once it leaves the island

Correct!
That's what everyone else seems to be experiencing (and my arrive-by date has not shipped yet either).
I'll know for sure once I have the package; but it seems like the handover is the US is to FedEx Express (versus Ground, Home Delivery, or Freight, which are slower and have totaly separate logistics systems).

That is great news! :)

Normally :apple: tends to use Home Delivery at least in my geography; which is a pain!

Still the international peice of the logistics cycle seems to be the bottle-neck.... do wish it wasn't so!

Mine finally left Lantau for Japan, and then left from Japan. The Fedex site shows it still in Lantau but the Yahoo sight I got from a link in another post has more updated info. Go figure.

Mine's been at LI since it shipped on Sunday (well I got the notice on Sunday, presumably Monday in HK). IIRC this happened with my original iPad or iPhone 4 or maybe both--item sat at LI doing nothing until a day or two before scheduled delivery, then zip, here in a flash. In fact the iPhone 4 actually came earlier than Fedex said it would.

Fedex still says delivery tomorrow, so I believe them.

Well mine is scheduled for delivery today by 430pm CST but it didn't leave Alaska till 750pm CST last night. Still says In Transit. I'm guessing it's not going to make it since it has not been signed in anywhere by now and I'm pretty sure that it should've already been on a truck if it was going to get delivered today. Bogus.

Heh. I wish that were the case. Mine seems to be stuck in Memphis. It was supposed to be here by 10:30 am today and yet it has now been in checked in, in Memphis 3 times, twice at "Int'l shipment release", with no movement since yesterday at 2:15 am.

On the one hand, I'm fairly upset - this wasn't a cheap purchase from some random web retailer - I took the morning off so that I could be here to sign for it. I've never had as opaque and frustrating of an experience ordering from Apple -- heck, I just bought a new MBP from them a few weeks ago and it got here very quickly.

On the other hand, Apple has until Friday to be within the original promised delivery window. Nevertheless, it really feels like they cut some corners on the logistics in this release and that's not leaving me happy.

My black AT&T 64GB arrived today!

WTF???????

Nevertheless, it really feels like they cut some corners on the logistics in this release and that's not leaving me happy.

I agree 200%
No matter if I get the iPad by FexEx expected date (23rd) or within Apple's window (25th).... the frustration factor (call it the human element) remians.

Given that Apple prides itself on the image it portrays through its products, end-user-friendly envirnoment, packaging, and stores.... this was a massive failure!! I bet the loss is customer lifetime value far exceeds whatever savings this logistics short-cut brought about.

And finally, why force-feed the consumer this inefficiency?? Give a faster option to those who are willing to pay for it!!

Finally it is moving again. My arrival is still tomorrow.

With some very minor differences in the times of day, this is what my tracking shows right now.

You do realize planes fly in the sky? :p

On a serious note; FedEx claims that tsunami delays are only affecting a handful of zip-codes in Japan.... so, no!

The culprit is the unique "Economy" contract that :apple: has with FedEx, maybe specifically for iPad (?). I called FedEx, and they informed me that the reason for the delay at Lantau is because the planes are "filling up" (first time I've EVER heard that excuse in 15 years of dealing with FedEx/DHL/UPS international deliveries!!).

My guess is :apple:'s cheapo contract is on a space-avialable basis on the international part of the shipment.

Holy crap what was I thinking! :D

My thought was air traffic is likely being diverted outside of Japan to other areas and could be delaying flights. Obviously if you spoke with Fedex that reasoning makes sense, I was just tossing out random thoughts.

Thankfully I followed up though or I would have been under the false impression all those were float planes :)

So my iPad that was scheduled for delivery today is still in Alaska. I talked to Fed Ex online and this is what they told me.

Thanks. Apple, the shipper has chosen International Economy Service (which is not a Priority service). It has been the same area because of lack of space on the aircraft at the origin point. Apple has chosen this space availability service and delivery commitment of 5 to 7 business days. Track it online tomorrow to ensure it is out for delivery.

I don't care what anyone says, this is unacceptable. I didn't pay almost a $1000 for this kind of customer service.

Is it within Apple's quoted delivery window? If not, call them and try to snag a free cover. Mine was just "released" in Anchorage, so hopefully it gets to Memphis tonight and to me tomorrow.

My frustration exactly!!

Thanks to Apple for treating the idiots (us) that woke up at 4:00 AM to place orders like trash!

So disappointed in a company I used to be proud evangelizing for....

I just lost a whole workday because FedEx (another pile of inefficiency it seems) showed my package in transit from Tennessee as of 4:00 AM, and still showed delivery date of 3/23 this afternoon..... now I'm told the iPad didn't leave Tennessee until 4:30 PM!! Another full plane maybe!

So;
  • No Pre-Orders
  • Open up online ordering at 4:00AM
  • No Express Shipping Option
  • Using THE most third class international shipping short of hiring Somali Pirates
  • (Not to mention, passing out incomplete information and no inventory tracking at Apple stores to make people line up morning after morning to get an iPad)
  • Absolutely NO respect for the consumer!!

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

This was the last time I try to be one of the first to buy Apple's new toy....

After this whole iPad Fiasco my feelings for Apple are the same as they are for the DMV.... I do business with them because i have to; but NEVER recommend them to anyone!!!!

Please tell me ANY OTHER consumer product that lets you track its movement from the factory in China all the way to your door?

All this griping about your iPad's long weekend (sipping Mai Tais and catching waves?) on Lantau Island is silly.

Lets start with the basics: First of all, its generally NOT very efficient to distribute consumer goods one-a-time via airfreight and home delivery. If you've ever shipped a package internationally, you'll know how expensive and inconvenient it can be. Simply filling out the customs forms is beyond many people. Secondly, Apple is offering the direct-shipment via FedEx as a convenience to its customers who aren't able to get an iPad at a retail outlet. And in order to do this in a reasonably economical fashion, while NOT charging those customers an arm and a leg for shipping, they've opted for a program that allows their vendor (FedEx) to utilize flexibility in loading and scheduling their aircraft - matching free space with available cargos.

If it wasn't for the FedEx tracking system, most people would have no idea that their iPad was sitting in a warehouse near Hong Kong International airport for a couple of days. They'd simply be happy when it showed up at their door.

Quit yer whining!

What happens when the tracking mis-informs you?

  • Mine told me at 8:00 am on 3/23 that I'd get the package that day (it was on the plane in TN at 4:00 am)
  • I took the day off to sign for it
  • Told me at 3:45, I'd still get at on 3/23
  • Tells me at 4:30 PM, after the entire work day, that package wasn't shipped from TN until that time, and it had been lying to me
  • Workday lost

I deserve to whine a little, no?

Quit yer hollier-than-thou-scolding!!!!

What about those of us who are actually grown-ups and would prefer the choice? Not all of us wants daddy-Jobs' hand-holding as you seem to....

I'd opt for 2-3 day shipping option even at $50 a pop.... and that is way over what any corporate account would charge...... yes, I do ship to Asia... A LOT!

And one more thing:

Your entire Grandpa-style ("you darned kids") scolding highlights some of the modern world's basic amenities that one would expect from any successful consumer-facing company.

Anything else? Maybe we should be thankful for Credit Cards and the International Monetary System.... otherwise we'd have to go to Cupertino and barter our goats with Steve for iPads! :p

Have a great day!!!
