Line at the Apple Store at the Christiana Mall in Delaware was several hundred deep @ 6AM. Apple employees came around asking for pre-orders/personal pickup and pulling us out to get into a separate line. At 8:00 when doors opened, there were 15 pre-orders taken in first and then the rest of the line started filing in. They had what looked like good stock, but I was the 4th or 5th person through the door so I'm not sure how long it will last.

Just got back from apple bridgewater and got there at 7am and there were about 40-50 in front of me. I was out with my 2 64gb 4Gs in hand by 8:30. The line was over when I left the store.

I' am from australia we don't have best n buy but we do have a jb hi fi franchise which I showed up to at 8.45am the funny thing was hardly anyone was there queuing up for the new iPad as a first time iPad buyer it kinda put me off it however as the doors opened went to the display model had all the time in the world to try it and than got one with minimal hassle.

I'm shocked by the short lines. I wonder why Apple didn't want to create more of a demand.

Remember your silly statement when the launch weekend sales number estimates -- or actuals are released on Monday. Lines have little significance. This is going to be the most financially successful iPad launch yet.

It was like this all the way down to the end and back to where I took the picture lol

Posted this on my new iPad :D

Lets remember that the iPhone 4S had pretty wide availability through the weekend and then got sold out by Monday.

I remember walking in on Saturday morning after the launch and just buying one with no line. Then by Monday locations were sold out and people were complaining.

Two explanations for the iPad situation:

1. Most people who *REALLY* wanted one already pre-ordered online. After all the pre-orders were up for 2-3 days before the shipping days got bumped. Everyone who is a big fan had plenty of time to get theirs in.

2. Similarly to the online pre-orders lasting a while, the stores may have stock for several days too. Then they may be sold out for weeks once initial stock is sold. We just have to wait and see.

I am in NYC. I went to the local Radio Shack (2 blocks from my apartment) at 8 a.m. when they opened. No customers in the store although one guy was walking out with an Ipad. I had previously put my name on a list (not an official pre-order) for a 64G wifi and 16 wifi (for my mother-in-law). It turns out they are not carrying 64G models in the store. I bought the 16G model. The I walked up to the Union Square Best Buy. They started selling at midnight and had told me on the phone yesterday that they thought they would be sold out by morning. At 8:15 a.m. the store is dead empty. I figure they are sold out. I go to the Apple section and they ask me what model I want. Picked up the 64G there. :D

The pre order may have satisfied a large portion of the initial demand. People get paid on Fri so the demand may pick up after work.

Also many people just bought ipad 2's and are not going to upgrade. The screen might be important to geeks but not as important to a large majority who are completely satisfied with their last purchase. My sister has an ipad 1 and has no desire to upgrade.
