I think it's because they are catering to different people just like they do with the iPad and iPad Pro range, MacBook and MacBook Pro range, iMac and the new iMac Pro later this year, Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Edition, and now the iPhone (7s and 7s Plus) and the iPhone Edition (or whatever they call it).
I think it's more of a gamble with the iPhone due to its obvious aesthetic difference and the fact the single latest iPhone has always been popular. They are watering down the range a bit and I think the perception will be the 7S is the new iPhone, rather than the sole emphasis being on the model Apple probably wish would be the bigger seller.

Everyone seems so excited for OLED screens - I'm not sure exactly what it will offer ME. I have no problem paying for what is worth while to ME.

Have to say my appreciation for Apple products is falling away every year. If Apple decide to charge a ridiculous price for the iPhone 8 and sell the 7s at the usual price I will just get a cheap 7.

I love iOS and android is a mess in comparison but I can put up with that if it means I don't get bent over for a ridiculous amount of money for a lazy rehash of a phone they designed 3 years ago. Unless the 8 is reasonable I will get a 7 and see what Apple do next year but if the trend for an outdated standard model for £600 continues I will move to android. My MacBook Pro cost about £300 more than it should have and the products the competition are producing are very good competition now for much less money.

Apple used to create beautiful hardware and software for a reasonable premium, they are now moving towards making very high quality devices with average performance for ridiculous money. At some point that will cause them real problems. There is only so far you can push customers when the competition is waiting with cheaper and better/equal products.

For me, they’re really starting to push the limit. I’ve been a big Apple fan for years. I got the first iPhone, I’ve had iPads, MacBooks, bought the first Apple Watch on launch day. I really prefer their software and hardware integration. However, I am aware of technology trends, and I know that they are just starting to get close to catching up with competitors on the hardware front. It’s their software with iOS that has saved them, up to now (in my opinion). I don’t really care what their argument is, I won’t pay significantly more for the same or slightly lesser hardware, just to have iOS. At some point, they’re going to start alienating their most loyal customers.

If this is the new trend, a mediocre model that is priced on the high end and a true update that is priced on the super high end, I don’t see myself participating. As someone else said in another thread, with the iPads, they’re really pushing the limits of the “Pro” thing. It just barely makes sense. With the iPhone, I don’t see it working at all.

How long will Apple charge $999 for an iPhone 8? Until the iPhone 10 comes out and then they'll raise the price to $1199. The iPhone 8S and 8S+ and the iPhone 9 will remain at $999.

And they will sell like hot cakes.

Between day 1 of pre-orders to their next earnings call, the iPhone will remain at their premium price. if Apple reports stellar earnings with iPhone, the price will remain where it is. If iPhone sales are not where they're supposed to be, Apple may make some changes however Apple is still Apple. it is only 12 months between Sept 2017 and Sept 2018. Apple may change their pricing structure with their 2018 edition.

Next year, the features of the "iPhone Pro" will go to the iPhone 8. They have to. And with that, the price will be cut a little bit. It will be more than what Apple sells the iphone 7S for this year, but less than $1000.

If customers want to send a message to Apple regarding their pricing, they shouldn't rush out to by the "iPhone Pro", even with an installment plan. But people will anyway. Apple knows their customers.

Original poster here. So I currently have an iPad Pro 10.5 and a Galaxy S8. The iPad is way ahead of the competition but the S8 I have is fine. For all the talk of Android being a mess it's not that bad. You just have to wait like 6 months for a software update lol. So that's ridiculous but the S8 software is good and I'm not really seeing much lag or anything like that.

Apple is making as much money as it can, while it can. These times won't last forever. There might come a time soon when consumers become unwilling to pay even 700 for a phone (i.e. the whole market changes). Apple could adapt to that, and would have to in order to survive.

The biggest danger is if Apple loses its cool factor. Who knows what could make that happen. People can tire of a brand or it could make some corporate misstep. But when it happens it can happen really fast and even with lower prices people wouldn't buy if it became uncool.

I bounce back and forth between the iPhone and the Galaxy phones, so I'm just wondering about the iPhone 8 price of $999. Knowing Apple I think that's the price the've always wanted to do, and after I added up upgrading to the 128gb model, AppleCare, and taxes...it came out to about $1350. I'm going to go with that is too much for a phone lol.

I know a lot of people will subsidize it and pay $40 or $50 a month but that still seems a bit high to me? Or are people seemingly willing to pay that?

They will pay it because most will buy it through their cell provider and pay $30 to $40 a month. Most don't see the phone as costing $1000. The see it as costing $30 to $40 per month.

The funny thing is that $30 to $40 a month is almost 3 years of financing to buy a phone. After a year or two, most will then complain that they are still paying on an outdated phone. I wonder why?

I do find it interesting the trends in pricing and what electronics are costing over all today. And it's not just iPhones, but other electronics as well. But as the iPhone continues to increase in cost, I also ask myself, what does Apple do to make the product better and more efficient? Some may not find a reason to pay a premium price point for an iPhone and others might. But as I have said before, that's why we have options of different iPhones that will appeal to everybody Differently.

I'm willing to pay a premium for iPhones primarily for Continuity with the iPad.

Caveat, older iPhones are already too good. For my usage and performance requirements, a $150 iPhone SE or a $400 iPhone 6S will work just as well and those models likely outperform similarly priced Android devices.

This is what makes the iPhone so valuable in terms of stability with iOS and longevity with the hardware. They just last and perform well, even when passed by there predecessors. Even the iPads are another testament to the iPhone's in terms of life span in comparison to the iPhone.

I’m a huge Apple fan, having used EVERY OS at one time or another, but $1000+ for a phone is probably my limit. I hate android because I have to open Google to track everything I say and do and I to even use their voice assistant. I simply can’t stand that. If the pricing structure turns out to be true to the speculation, I will simply take some old apple hardware I have, trade it in and upgrade to the next 7 iteration. For my life, I can’t believe there is anything that the 8 will do that I will actually NEED.

I don't buy apple products for need necessarily, I do it because I need some subset of its functionality and I like the aesthetics, software and longevity of it. I can usually see the value even if others call it overpriced. £1000 for an iPhone is far beyond my limit. They simply should not be charging that much.

Until they decide they can charge $1,200.

Let's face it, anybody wanting this thing, wants top of the line, so you know they'll likely spring for the 256GB Option at $1150.

As I mentioned in another thread the samsung galaxy note 8 is $960 and the S8 is $750. Also my provider charges $550 for the iPhone. Not sure why everyone is freaking out about Apple charging what is now essentially a standard price for a premium brand new phone.

The ONLY way this phone will drop in price - maybe - if... eck...there are huge flaws with the phone, the OLED, any Face ID failures, massive widespread glitches that could arise after these ship out in November.

A mess like that will scare off others after seeing potential big problems, they will simply refuse to drop $1000 + on the X, the risk is too great. This is all new for Apple, I do fear these kind of problems with this new phone, I'm not ripping on them and I really hope I'm wrong.

I don't know why...like I said, maybe it's because this is all new. The delay has me concerned perhaps. I just have a very bad feeling about this model for some reason.

They'll be able to charge it for as long as they want. Because people will always pay it. I don't get why people always add on the cost of Apple care to give a much higher grand total. You don't have to purchase it and many don't.

I have insurance through my carrier. It covers more than Apple Care does. Had a problem with my daughters 6 and they sent her a brand NIB sealed 6S upgrade without any hassles whatsoever.

Not everybody here is American that's why. The iPhone X is over £250 more expensive here and in many parts of Europe. It's far from 'standard' price here and is getting slaughtered in the press already.
