I am holding onto the 2G because I'm unable to upgrade and I'm going to get the new iPhone when it comes out(not the nano if that even comes out)

Why? Because its a great phone and there's no reason to drop 200 (or 300 cuz I would get a 16gb) for the same phone minus the aluminum, plus 3G, GPS, and normal headphone jack.

I'm waiting till this summer when they'll hopefully release something thinner and faster with 32gb memory.

Same reason I'm holding on to my Edge iPhone

I don't want to pay an extra $15 for 3g and 200 text messages right now :D

Still have mine although I may make the leap very soon. I've been happy with my 1st Gen 4GB until I upgraded my wife's to the 3G. The GPS and the 3G are nice. I also found out that my company discounts with AT&T will kick in if I have a 3G since I'm the primary on the account so our service actually gets cheaper. I know, I know; if I had been paying attention here and on Howardforums, I would have known that six months ago but, like I said, we were happy with our 1st Gens so I didn't...:)

I am running mine on tmobile, I don't see any advantage of having a 3G phone without 3G service, so it will be the OG iphone for me for a while.

I'm still on my ver 1 iPhone because i bought it late enough in the cycle that it's still "new"

Plus, I find that ATT 3G is pretty spotty in many places where I travel for work - as well as along the N-Judah line in SF

I figure I'll probably skip 3G for the next iteration - but really, since Monday's coming, I'm probably speaking prematurely.

I have two 1st gen iPhones and an iPhone 3G. I like the iPhone 3Gs shape, speed and signal strength, but the original iPhones have a more classy feel and feel way stronger and more rugged. I'm in love with the original iPhone, but I can't give up my 3G.

Still using my 1st gen.. picked it up a week after launch

Don't have 3G in my area yet... So no need to upgrade

Though I was close to upgrading last week when my iphone got wet and killed the battery.. I just installed the new battery today and its back to life. :)

Hopefully it will last until the next major iphone upgrade...

EDGE to be downgraded in quality

I like my first gen and for me Edge is adequate enough so I'm not inclined to pay for the 3G plus SMS but this recent article is concerning.

I'm still using my first gen for a few reasons:

1) 3G's hardware was not improved enough for me to justify paying for the phone, the extra $10/month for data, and the loss of my upgrade eligibility for a future iPhone. I have access to WiFi many places, and each passing the day the iPhone lacks turn-by-turn directions the GPS "upgrade" becomes more and more meaningless.

2) I like having the original when most everyone else you see with an iPhone has the 3G.

3) The screen of the original feels SO much better than the 3G's. I know they are both glass, but I compared them side by side in store and they are really different.

HOLY CRAP! That sucks dude! I have an iPhone 3G, but I really like the original iPhone. Hmm. What a crappy thing to do. Force people to upgrade to a 3G device by decreasing the 2G service... ugh. Great. Just great. I don't like that at all.

2G crew checking in. The phone does everything I need; its a HUGE upgrade from my POS Razr (even if it doesn't do multimedia text...); I can't justify upgrading my phone now when I have more important things to use my money for.

Have 1st gen since July 07 release. Came close to getting 3G iPhone, but coverage then was poor, just updated last couple months but waiting for Macworld to see if maybe 32gig 3G on the near horizon. If so, I'll make the switch, also when 2.0 update was released, brought 1st gen users parallel to 3G users with exception of 3G and GPS.

I was a pristine 16GB 2G owner until Dec when my dad got me a 3G for my bday and took over my 2G (only 2Gs could be unlocked at the time). I like the 3G but still prefer the 2G design overall. Just feels less fragile and looks more classy and has a superior screen IMO

Im keeping mine mainly because it is easy to keep unlocked. I have never been on the official provider...and also because Apple just replaced my original iPhone with a brand new one :)

still got mine from launch day 07. i plan on upgrading when a new model comes out this summer (assuming that apple keeps doing minor updates each summer, which i think they will). so i'll be on the 2 year refresh cycle. seems a bit absurd to me to upgrade your phone once a year. and everyone who bought the 3G iphone at the subsidized price is going to have to pay full price (probably $600) this time around if they want the new one.

I'm still on my 2G 16Gb, bought in March 2008, unlocked to use O2 Simplicity tariff in the UK. I love the phone and it does everything I want (except Flash grrrrrr)

I haven't seen any reason to change :)

My wife and I still have ours. Mine is currently jb and unlocked for use here in the Netherlands. We have had ours since Nov. 2007.

To the OP, why wouldn't we still have our 1st gens. Still a very capable phone imo.;)

I have a first gen. Only got it 9 months ago and I only replace phones every 18 months or so.

Also kept this because I have it unlocked and the 3G was locked only.

I wish I did still have my 1st Gen, the 3G seems almost 'common' now, plus I liked the strong feel of the aluminium back as opposed to the shiny black plastic.

Unfortunately, I sold my 1st Gen for £285 (having only paid £320 for it new!) and only had to pay £60 for the 3G, plus corporate discount (only available on iPhone 3G contracts!) means I pay less per month.

Having said all that, the 3G is still frickin ace!

I had the 2G since May. Now, my Dad has it.
I have the 3G now. I stuck with 2G because I didn't feel like dishing out an extra $15 a month (hey, it adds up!) But since my iPhone was like a Christmas gift to him, I bought the 3G since I wanted an iPhone again.
But my 2G was very good to me. 3G is treating me well also. :)

I got the 1st gen the day they went down to $300 for my wife. When the 3G came out we drove 200 miles to the apple store and I could not get her to look at them. I want her 1st gen. It is still mint looking.

I've only just moved to an iPhone 3G after using a first gen iPhone since October 2007.

Interesting observations after using both...

First gen is a better made handset than the 3G version.
First gen has a "whiter" brighter screen than the 3G version.

3G version has better call quality due to much louder speaker.
3G version sends text much quicker (3G network).
3G version is a nicer unit to hold than the first gen.

First gen is easier to type on for some reason
First gen has a more solid build
First gen has better silent switch
First gen doesn't crack

As for 3G... I don't think text messages go through as data, so I don't understand why texting would be faster. I own a 3G iPhone and texting seems like the same speed. (I own two first gen iPhones too).

My 2G is a "Day One" model and I still am wowed by its usefulness. I'm waiting for a 32gig model before I upgrade to 3G. Hopefully that will be next week, but if not I'll wait. The software updates keep it current.
