I have a crapload on my Mac Pro. I tried Quicksilver, but couldn't get into it. I use the mouse more than anything.

10 apps including the finder. I generally only put apps that I use on a daily basis in the dock, the rest are accessed using Spotlight.

I keep it as low as possible. Only the programs that I use on a sort of daily basis:

Finder - iTerm - Mail - SpamSieve* - Hogwasher - Vienna - Opera - PasswordVault - VMware Fusion - AddressBook - iCal - Preview -Logic Pro - iTunes - VLC | Applications** - Documents - Downloads - Trash

Maybe I forgot a few, but that looks like it is.

*: No need for SpamSieve to be there, but as Mail is a LoginItem SpamSieve will be loaded anyway, so I don't care that it is there.
**: This is not the normal Applications, but the ~/Applications with Aliases to commonly used programs. /Applications takes me too long to find what I need.

1 way i did it, was just make aliases of all the application into a folder called Apps

2 install your apps (if possible in a new folder; Apps)

the aliases work like a breeze that way you dont have to get confused with where everthing is installed, th eonly nit picky thing is hiding that shortcut/alias arrow.

I just made a stack of the applications folder and open it in a grid. All my applications fit in the grid on the screen, so it is really convenient. I gues making aliases would be more convenient if you have more apps than fit in the grid..

In the original 10.5 demo, Steve showed taking random files/apps from different places and putting them into one stack. Therefore the App stack would not be cluttered with things like Exposé.

i also saw video on youtube showing a developer build before the one shown at WWDC07 where application stacks could be made in the application side of the dock i.e. CS3 stack and Office stack. cant remember the name of the video though.

I keep my Dock really simplistic and clean. I use the insanely great Butler to launch applications, bookmarks, iTunes playlists, etc. There is a bunch of tutorials on Butler over at Mac Kindergarten. I just love this program.

The apps I use daily:

Finder
Safari
Mail
Microsoft Messenger
Skype
iTunes
iPhoto
Pages

and then four stacks:

Home folder
Applications
Downloads
Documents

and the Trash.

All of those apps except iPhoto and Pages are usually always open, so it doesn't really matter whether they are in the dock by default or not. So I just put them there :). iPhoto and Pages aren't always open but I use them often enough to guarantee a place in the dock. For everything else, I use Cmd+Space -> first letter/two letters of the app's name -> Enter :).
