Interesting post, didn’t read most replies, but how many people in this situation want to openly admit to it?

It’s like asking people if they make poor financial choices, most will tell you no. People who make poor financial decisions usually don’t realize or don’t want to face this fact.

And the value of this thread is....? Understanding socioeconomic behaviors? I’d rather talk phones.

I say interesting because OP made it clear he was interested in how people make financial decisions, especially bad ones. I think that’s a fair social studies topic. I just don’t think he’ll get much valuable input.

Right....I smell a troll. You sold your 7 to go back to a 6?? I am sure, it's so common for people to downgrade, especially well to do corporate lawyers.

Mommy needs to keep an eye on your internet activity.
I should really stop commenting on these crap talking posts, but I'd like to point out how wrong you are. I bought the red 7+ in May of this year. After using it for 2 months, I honestly didn't see/feel any difference to my previous phone. I knew the X was coming out, so I figured that I would sell the 7+ while there is still a market for it (I sold it for $1,000 CDN btw), and use that money for the X in a few months and in the mean time ride it out with my 6+. At 28 years old I have a home, 2 cars and plenty of money in the bank. Being wealthy has nothing to do with making, what i feel was, a poor decision. I felt as though I paid $1,000 for more storage that i didn't need. All of the other upgraded features of the 7+ were lost on me since i did not use them, so it was a useless upgrade for me.

And I openly question the motivation and validity of his post. It’s passive aggressive and antagonistic.

Sure, I’m not OP so I can’t speak for his true motivations, right now I’m just giving him the benefit of the doubt and taking what he says at face value.

Well after paying the mortgage and bills I save around 70% of the cost of an iPhone X so affording one is not an issue for me.

I am not rich and I have a family to support. It all comes down to individual financial choices.

I would rather spend the £1,000 doing up my house or taking my family away somewhere nice on holiday.

I have a 2 year old phone at the moment that I see no need to replace.

Lol if you look at their filings they aren’t even putting a close amount of investments into giga lte.

Nothing mentioned on earnings call, statements or anything. Nobody will have it by the end of the year and nobody will have it next year. The iPhone ‘s modem has the capability to run 600mbps on lte which no carrier can come even close too.

It’s funny how you’re saying the phone doesnt have technology for technology that isn’t even available yet.

And I too should stop commenting on this post because it is most likely perpetuating it. I would REALLY like to believe you, but I don't. I have been active on message boards for the past 20 years that focus on topics that are my hobbies, vices and passion (cars and electronic gadgets). Most of the time the OP is simply an impostor who is trying to get a rise out of the folks in the market for or already own the latest and greatest and they themselves are most likely unable to obtain it.

I mean really, can anyone justify the need for an $1,150 256GB phone? For most, it is not a matter of whether they can afford it, it is something they want that will make them happy. I don't think ANYONE here on these forums getting the X is panhandling on street corners or taking food out of their babies mouths to get the X, 8 or whatever.

Being able to afford something that is discretionary is completely subjective.

Haha, Just thought of a good example - shiny car rims wheels.

In a BMW forum, I've seen people asking which set of $4-5K rims wheels they should buy, and most are financing or leasing their rides.

Oh my gosh, rims wheels cost that much?

Sorry, it's a *thing* with me :D

Side note: I've put aftermarket wheels on a leased vehicle, stored the stockers, put them back on to turn the car in. While some of my cars I buy (mostly because I know they're going to go through extreme modifications), the "family rides" I generally like to lease - always under warranty, maintenance covered on makes we shop, we're low mileage consumers so no issues there - end of lease, here's the keys, done. :)

I did. So what? I've explained Im good to go. I have a contract phone for over 10 years. I pay 50 euro and that's included the phone. I can and I will. I have no savings but have 2 houses in Turkey. So my sons future is kind of good to go.

Oh my, a little oversensitive; aren't we?

I'm a third-year college student here with a part-time job. Buying it with one of my credit cards, paying it off relatively quick, selling my 7 Plus 128GB to recoup at least half of the cost. No regrets.

Life is too short to not enjoy, and if this phone brings pleasure to me in some way, shape, or form, then all is well! We live in an era where smartphones dominate our lives, and being the tech geek that I am, this is extremely appealing and has value to me.

probably more than we want to know. Seeing that 69% of Americans have less than 1,000 in their savings account and 34% have ZERO savings

https://www.fool.com/investing/2016/09/25/how-much-does-the-average-american-have-in-their-s.aspx

Surely this can not be right.

Who in their right mind would purchase a 1K smartphone if they have no disposable cash?

And those in the 15% with 1K to 10K , how can they justify spending 10%, if they are at the very top of that group, of their saving on a phone?

These numbers must be bogus.

My current situation is this -

Need to save a minimum of $1,500 for 1099 taxes. Only have $800 now.

Getting bill credits for the Google Pixel promo which deducts $13 for 24 months on my T-Mobile bill.

Still have $400 balance on the S7 edge with T-Mobile. Adds $25. What should be $57 cost me $82.

I work like a dog even with Medi-Cal and EBT. Basically 6-7 days per week. Not one of these guys who drinks all day and free loads off taxpayers. Every two months I need an oil change.

Two weeks ago, I needed to get my rotors replaced for $160. I have to keep replacing new tires every 20 months which cost me $200 from each side. I basically have to save 5% for car maintenance not including gas.

For me to get the X, I would need to pay the entire balance on the S7e or sign up for Verizon again. Because I can't do a T-Mobile Jump since I already sold the S7e.

Where all carriers trap you is them selling you more lines you don't need. That's why no rush. And I figure by understanding the iPhone design / specs patterns, the iPhone in 2019 will go metal again. They change the rear materials within every generation.

Just going to sit back and watch the fireworks.

Gen 1 (metal 1x, plastic 2x)
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3Gs

Design - 2G
Specs - 3Gs

Gen 2 (glass 2x, metal 3x, plastic 1x)
iPhone 4
iPhone 4s
iPhone 5
iPhone 5c
iPhone 5s
iPhone SE

Design - 5s
Specs - SE

Gen 3 (metal 3x, glass 1x)
iPhone 6
iPhone 6s
iPhone 7
iPhone 8

Design - 7 matte black
Specs - 8 Plus

Gen 4
iPhone X

Next iPhone X goes glass. The following iPhone design in 2019 will look the same at the front but might go metal.

No rush to buy it when I can't afford to spend $1100 right now and know how much it improves by the third model from each gen (3gs, 5s, 7)... 3-5 year gen cycles.

I really don’t care for the specs. New iPhone, I’m buying it 2. One for my wife and I. Same every year for me. Luckily I can afford them. But I do respect you saying your in no rush to buy it when you can’t afford it. Smart man there. That’s making a smart decision. Somehow, it’s hard for people to make that decision.

Can I afford it usually? No, probably not but the past 2 months I’ve been top in my region in sales so my commission checks recently have been really good. Also it’s my birthday Sunday so I figured I’d treat myself...
