Haha, I bought a 2.93 GHz iMac a half year ago, to replace a secondhand PowerBook I bought, and after that I sold the PowerBook and got a secondhand BlackBook. I do feel very spoiled right now, as my secondary machine (the MacBook) is quicker than most people's main machine, but I'm fine with it now, as I'm a heavy computer user.
It really does come in handy sometimes, when giving presentations in class, or when visiting Grandma to show her pictures of my life.
Oh and I also have an old iMac G4 (the lamp one) at my parents', but no-one uses it anymore. It's there just being cool =p

MacPro in my home recording studio.
MacBook Air for travel and casual web surfing.
MacMini as Media Center, web server, and video recorder.
MacBook for mobile recording. (Has FW and a 2,5"/7200rpm HD.)
My wife's sunflower iMac in her home office.
My wife's MacBook Air for portability.
There's also a PowerBook 5300, upgraded with WiFi. It runs MacOS 9.1, and is, after all, an awesome machine for the time.

So that's 7 or 8, if you include my iPhone 3G.

4 at the moment. I think I can fit another desktop in, not sure how well it'd bode for my electric bills.

I also own a Mac mini that I gave away (it's still under my name), and a dozen computers at home that are collecting dust.

So that's 7 or 8, if you include my iPhone 3G.

I'd have a hundred computers if we start including phones.

* iphone 3gs/32gb
* MacBook Pro, early 2009, 4GB, 15.4", 2.66GHz
* iMac, early 2009, 24", 2.93GHz (might sell, hard to say right now)
* Mac Pro, early 2009, 8GB, ATi 4870 (might go dual?), single quad 2.66GHz

I thought having 3 was bad...

I only have the one, and I think that it might be a pain to maintain more than one. You might have a paper on your imac, then take the MBP and not realize that its on the other computer. What I'm thinking of doing is waiting to look at the tablet and then buying an iMac. It would be sweet if you could sync the tablet like an iPhone, but also sync documents and other projects😀

1)Macbook Pro (2.2 GHz 4GB 320 GB)
My work horse. Take it with me every morning. Hook it up to external screen when i get home.

2) Dell Optiplex SX260 2GHz 768MB 1.5 TB
Server, without any keyboard or screen.
Fileserver and iTunes library server

3) Dell Optiplex SX260 2GHz 768MB/40GB
Just a box used for iTunes, Spotify and web browsing.
Running Win 7.

That's what MobileMe is for 😀

I personally prefer to use free alternatives if I need though 😀

i own 5 macs and 1 pc. the pc is dyin' and only used for kids web games and the wife's ms money (looking at a mac version to rid of that use).

the 5 macs (1 is a mbp) are used for my business so they're in use at varying times, sometimes all at once.

I think if I wasn't running a business, I would have 1 desktop (imac or mac pro) and 1 mbp for portability. Fact of life is that we're (on average), pretty dialed in with technology.

Enough that I've been forced to unload the oldest gear so that I no longer receive pointed jokes about my little computer museum. 😀

I've still got a working AS/400, Alpha running OpenVMS (and a dead VAX) amongst my prized possessions, though.

Dang, where'd you get all these high end systems? 🙂

IBM AS/400 running AIX, I assume?
DEC Alpha with VMS
and VAX also runs VMS...(By the way, I despise the LSE editor...had to use that to write COBOL code back in uni days...heh.)

Hahahaha 🙂 Yes, know what you mean by LSE -- the Language-Sensitive Editor. I have it installed and licensed on my VMS boxes but normally use regular ol' TPU or sometimes even the port of VIM for writing my C-based code or editing files in general. I've even got the VAX emulated via the free SIMH emulator on my MBP -- works great.

AS/400 runs OS/400 which feels sorta mainframe-ish but easier and more cleanly implemented because of its much newer heritage. But I'd forgotten I have an IBM POWER4+ pSeries server running AIX 6.1 as well. Right next to the AS/400 machine. Of the 'weird' boxes, the Alpha's my favorite. Overall, my MBP is by far the all-time favorite with the Alpha a close second. I used to have even more oddball machines but have since unloaded them.

I scored each box for a couple hundred bucks off eBay; they're usually older generation machines that companies unloaded for newer boxes but are still respectable without being too heavy or huge. I also got licenses included or for free, so it hasn't been an issue either.

Oh ok...AIX was my introduction to UNIX when I started at uni ('92) - For some reason, I thought I remembered them having an AS/400 as the machine, but I just checked Wikipedia - it was actually an RS/6000 box 🙂

(Within 2 years, they saw the error of their ways (and the price tag of IBM's support contract), and switched to 2 clustered SMP Linux boxes running the university's student internet service 🙂)

I have:
A home built hackintosh (3.2 GHz Pentium D, 3 GB ram)
A MBP 2.4GHz 4GB ram 160 GB internal
A HP mini 1000 netbook (still haven't hackintoshed it)

And I am planning on making the leap to a Mac Pro soon!

4

I have 4 that work and are used on an almost daily basis.

1. Unibody MacBook Pro 2.4 ghz. I use it as my everything computer no matter what i need it does.

2. Mac mini 2.0 ghz. HTPC and storage, it has about 6 gig of storage its gets used a lot for having no keyboard or mouse hooked up to it.

3. Custom built PC 2.8 dual core 4 gb of ram decent pc for games nothing special it works has 7 on it.

4. iMac g5 2.0 with a broken screen (love screen sharing) but with 4 external dvd drives hooked up to it. Still works sorta. I use to rip movies and encode.....slowly....and i mean slowly...but hey its a good set it and forget it one, good for tv shows and its in the attic.....I have no idea how it still works 😕 it gets hot, it gets cold, and it gets humid in there and just keeps on going, for 2 years now, i think the runtime is 240 days or something. Would bring it down but nowhere to put it...and its so darn loud.....

Broken or not built:
Dell laptop - Broken (screen)
Other Dell Laptop - Broken (mobo)
Other Other Dell Laptop - you guessed it...broken (HD but too old to bother with)
Some pentium 4 board - in a drawer under the iMac
Some AMD Board - Same as P4 board
Some Asus mini computer got from circuit city for free that overheats and turns off

I think thats it 🙄

5 Computers

Laptops:
1 15" MacBook Pro - Mac OS X 10.5 for Perl and Network Development
1 Compaq NC 6250 - Fedora Linux - for Perl/Tcl/Network Development
1 Acer Aspire Netbook - Fedora/Ubuntu/Flavour of the day Linux - for various work and playing around with

Desktops:
1 Compaq P III Desktop from years ago - Debian Linux as a firewall/router/vpn
1 Old iMac - Debian Linux as a web server

Lost count.

Somewhere North of 100 in my house. Ranging from an Apple IIc to a quad-socket Itanium server.

Most are older Macs, with some sporadic others mixed in (IBM PowerPC ThinkPad, SGI Indy, HP PA-RISC, NeXTstation Turbo, the aforementioned Itanium.)

As for 'everyday' computers, I have the four primary notebooks in the house:
MacBook Pro (early 2006, 2.0 GHz Core Duo) - My primary machine
MacBook (2006, 2.0 GHz Core Duo, black) - My wife's primary machine
12" PowerBook G4 (early 2003, 867 MHz) - My daughter's computer
HP Mini 1000 (Atom, running HP's "Mi" Linux, although I have gotten OS X Leopard to install.) - My travel machine (yes, my MBP now acts largely as a desktop)

I also have four 'primary desktop' computers:
Homebuilt Core i7 - Gaming/test machine. I'm running Vista Ultimate on one drive. The other drive I had the Windows 7 RC on, but have recently tried to get it to run OS X. I can get it to install, but without many important drivers. The moment I install the drivers, it no longer boots.
Homebuilt Core 2 Quad - Son's machine. Presently running the Windows 7 RC (It's installation of Vista took a dump on itself about two weeks ago, and I figured I wasn't going to bother re-installing Vista this close to 7's release.) I know someone who has a near-identical hardware setup (same motherboard and video card,) who has gotten OS X to install; but my son isn't interested.
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio, with 1.5 GHz G4 upgrade) - This one is largely unused now. Since I got a 2 TB USB hard drive and connected it to my AirPort, it no longer acts as server. My wife used to use it as her primary, but she has basically completely switched over to her MacBook.
Dual Xeon workstation - Video editing rig (both home videos and DVD rip/recompress.) Currently running Vista Ultimate; in theory this motherboard should run OS X, I just haven't tried. I really should; as I greatly prefer OS X video editing tools to Windows. (And it's light-years faster than my MBP, which I use for doing home videos now.) When I was doing SD, the MBP was acceptable; but with my new HD camcorder and HD DVDs, the MBP just doesn't cut the mustard any more. (I've put off editing many home movies due to the slowness of the MBP.)

I recently struggled with the same decision and actually tried both scenarios. I bought a Macbook for and a 20inch cinema display as a secondary monitor. Worked good for me but I got in the mood recently to convert all my DVDs and upload them into iTunes and use a PC as a media server. So I bought a mac pro and have both. The mac pro is great to have as my powerhouse, which i can use to store all my music and now movies and my macbook is great for taking around with me to school and to the couch.

How'd you get Windows 7 to install on an SX260 with no DVD Drive and no support of USB Device boot? Just really curious because I have one my self and I am trying to do the same thing!
