Here's my list.

In current use:

  • :apple: iMac Aluminum 20" 2.0GHz, purchased just as Leopard came out (November 2007). It's my main computer/central iTunes library/Cakewalk music workstation via Boot Camp.
  • Self-built Athlon 64 PC, 3500+ Clawhammer. My former main computer, now hooked up to a TV in the basement as a DVD/digital media player and DVD ripper.
  • Toshiba Satellite 1905 notebook, Pentium 4 from late 2003, still does OK as a portable Web surfer and light/old-school gaming machine for traveling. I want to replace this so bad with the small MacBook Pro, but getting my wife to agree will take a good bit of work.
  • Compaq Presario, Athlon 3300+. My wife's computer.
All the PCs above have XP (including the iMac's Boot Camp). We've managed to avoid Vista.

Still working, but not in regular use:
  • AST Advantage Adventure 575, originally with AMD K5 chip, but upgraded to Pentium 83. Still runs Windows 98; I kept it as a console for Doom II, but I only fire it up once a month or so.

Not working:
  • Quantex Pentium II 350 MHz. It worked rather well as a secondary Web browser for eight years, until the power supply (I think) bit the dust sometime last year. I haven't yet bothered to replace the PS. It had a video card with a hardware DVD decoder chip, so that the Pentium II wouldn't be overtaxed. Unfortunately, there is no XP driver for the card, so the last OS it had was ME. Surprisingly, I had little trouble with ME or with Quantex (it was my second Quantex; my first was their 486/DX33).

I own

2 x quad core PC's each with 4gb of 800hmz ram and 8600gt (yeah i know crappy graphics card)

1 x dual core PC again with 4gb of ram but ddr3 1066mhz and a ati 4850

1 x advent 4211 netbook (msi wind)

1 x acer laptop (cant remember the model never use it its about a year old, i also sold my other acer laptop to gain money to afford my mbp)

abouts 3 other pc's which are older that never get used unless i find a cool project to do with them.

And I own a macbook pro (in my sig) I use to have more pc's and laptops but i horde stuff so i decided to give them away or just throw them out

1 old dell laptop

1 sony vaio

1 alienware m9750 - selling

1 dell mini 9 - maybe selling

and wtb 15" MBP

+ 2 dell laptops for work, but i dont own them 😉

For syncing, I have many of my files on a NAS box. Well, right now, it's just an external hard drive attached to the network. I plan on building a true RAID based NAS at some point. I basically sync all my iPods to the Mini (except my 30GB 5th gen. I've been too lazy to reformat it from my old PC). I use GMail for email, contacts, etc. I don't have an iPhone or any smart phone right now, so I don't have to worry about that.

I have way too many computers, but I find that I still use most of them on a weekly basis.

4 PCs (1 Little Bro, 2 Parents, 1 Mine)

i> PC 1 is an HP Desktop 2.8GHz Pentium 4 w/ 512MB RAM running XP Pro (Parents Business)
ii> PC 2 is a DIY Desktop Core 2 Duo E6600 with 2GB RAM running Vista Home Premium (Parent's Business)
iii> PC 3 DIY Desktop Pentium 4 2.8GHz w/ HyperThreading with 1.5GB RAM XP Home. (Little Brother)
iv> PC 4 is a HP laptop 1.66GHz Core Duo with 2GB RAM running XP Home. (Guess who)

1 Mac (mine)

Collector's Edition Al MacBook 2.4Ghz with 4GB RAM.

1) iMac G4 (iLamp) 1Ghz: my first and only mac until 2006. It was fine for undergraduate work, but when I went off to grad school I knew I would want a portable. Luckily, the MacBook appeared and I bought a revA CoreDuo. The iMac became a glorified jukebox and dvd player.

2) RevA MacBook 2 Ghz: ideal for grad school, but an absolute lemon of a machine (5 logic boards, 2 complete rebuilds, 3 superdrives, 3 hard drives, etc. . . it actually spent almost as much time in the shop as it did at school). I wrote my master's thesis on this machine between trips to the genius bar.

2a) Dell 2408WFP monitor: purchased to relieve some eye strain caused by writing ~250 pages of thesis on the mb. Unfortunately, the 4th logic board couldn't handle the strain, and I was unable to get the mb repaired before I finished my degree and moved into a tiny place where I had no room for the 2408wfp.

3) 13" Unibody MBP 2.53 ghz: purchased recently after the macbook's hd crashed (again). I love this machine.

I currently only use the mbp (the mb languishes on a side table in the bedroom, and the iMac is boxed up). When I move into a new place in a week or so, I plan to turn the mb into a backup/entertainment server, but I'm somewhat concerned about the long-term viability of the mb and wonder if it will be able to drive the 2408wfp (I've been unable to test it since the most recent logic board replacement). I may just use the mbp, recycle the mb (I would feel uncomfortable selling it or giving it away given all the problems it had over the years), and sell the iLamp (but I really love that computer).

Short answer: 3

My current computers....
  1. Late 2007 24" iMac 2.4GHz running Snow Leopard
  2. Early 2006 15" MacBook Pro 1.83GHz running Snow leopard
  3. Acer Aspire L320 Compact Desktop running Windows 7 RC
Also in the house are my daughters 15" Dell laptop (Vista) and Packard Bell desktop (XP) and a collection of old Windows desktops in the loft.

Before I moved, I had around 12. Two laptops, homemade PC, and a couple powermacs to tinker with. Then a cube and a nice powermac MDD I got for 50 bucks.

But I had to move to Philly to go to school and sold them all but the MBP and settled on a Mac Pro. Best of both worlds and don't have any problems.

one and a half. a macbook pro + 6 yr old half-dying dell desktop(unsure whether or not it's dead. not booting any more😕)
so glad to have a chance buying a new mac!!😛

Macs

Right now I am using:

Work
2008 Mac Pro (Octocore)
15" MBP 2.5 GHz C2D (not unibody)
Mac Mini 1.6 GHz

Home
15" MBP 2.5 GHz C2D

Really thinking about a 13" Unibody for travel. Starting to wish I had something smaller than the 15" MBP.

Early 2009 iMac 24" OS X & Windows XP. Replaced my Windows 2000 PC when it died.
Power Mac G5 1.8 SP - Mostly the kids and wife.
White MacBook late 2008 - Mostly kids and when I travel.
Mac mini G4 - most a cool screen saver/big picture frame but also lite web browsing.
Wife has a HP PC for work.

a few dead or close to dead PCs.

Would like an AppleTV (when it can do 1080P).
Could also say 2 more MacBooks, 1 white and 1 a pro for the college kids.

Apple majority I own

My new aluminum macbook soon will replace with macbook pro because I need firewire, and I edit videos plus photos for those reasons only.

White Imac
White macbook
HP notebook dv6000 which is crap laptop, never buy HP products in my opinion.

Currently, I have 3 computers:

Mine:

15" Late 2008 Macbook Pro 2.4GHz
- My primary computer that I use for everything, internet, movies, musics, gaming (bootcamp into Windows 7), etc.

Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop (Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 1.5TB HDD)
- Thinking about adding a nice video card to this and making it my gaming PC, but lately I've been playing mostly Xbox 360 games so I haven't turned this PC on for months.

SO's:

13" Unibody Macbook 2.4GHz
- She uses it as her primary and only computer for everything: internet, school, work, music, movies, garageband, etc.

To the OP you may want to consider getting a 13" or 15" Macbook Pro, and just getting an external LCD. You said you already have a bluetooth Apple mouse and keyboard so the only 2 things you'd need to connect to the laptop to convert it to "desktop mode" when at your desk is the Magsafe power and mini-displayport. Very easy. I do this now actually and use my 15" uMBP as my laptop + desktop. Been working great. And like you said I don't have to maintain 2 sets of files and make sure they are synched between 2 or more computers. After you get the Macbook Pro you can try to sell your iMac to recoup some costs (yours is the white 24" iMac? Can probably sell it on Craigslist for $750+).

Really thinking about a 13" Unibody for travel. Starting to wish I had something smaller than the 15" MBP.

Why is that? Is the 15" too bulky? Just asking as I am thinking of getting a new 15 inch MBP at the next refresh...

I have a G5 iMac, first-gen Mac Pro, 2007 17" MBP and first-gen MacBook Air, as well as the iPhone 3G S. Use 'em all for different purposes and love 'em all! The iPhone is great but there are times when I need portability in a computer, too, and that is when the MacBook Air or the 17" MBP come in handy, depending upon the specific situation. My machines are all synchronized through MobileMe and that is very convenient. I don't find it cumbersome at all having this many machines!

I use a Mac Pro and a unibody MacBook on a daily basis. Its not unreasonable to have both a desktop and a laptop, especially if you find yourself a "power user."

I also have a work-issued 17" HP/Compaq 2.16GHz C2D running Windows that I virtually never use, though I did reformat the HD and put Windows 7 on it for fun to see how it was.

At home, we have 6 Laptops for 3 people, with the second machines usually being the older machines that were replaced by upgrades.

The list is as Follows

Me

13" Macbook Pro (2 weeks old)
12" Dell XPS M1210 Laptop (Purchased Q4 2006)

Dad
Sony Vaio TX??? Ultraportable (Purchased Q2 2007)
Sony Vaio Tx170p Ultraportable (Purchased 2003, replaced when it begin giving )

Mum
Sony Vaio P Netbook (Q2 2009)
Toshiba Satellite Pro (2007)(Replaced by the Sony P when she couldn't carry it around easily anymore)

So on average we replace our computers every three years, but usually when the current machine no longer meets our requirements rather then just upgrading for the sake of it.

MacBook Pro 17" Generation before the new design. Model 4,1. (I'm made of bad luck) My main machine. does all my final cut studio work and after effects etc.

Komplett Intel Gamer Custom Built PC A.K.A A radiator in winter. Plays all my games etc.

PowerBook G4 1.25GHz 15.2" If all else fails I have a 2nd plan. This thing needs a new battery, Some soldering to fix that video problem then it's fit. Infact I'm typing on it now as my Mac is with apple aka I'm typing on my iBackup

iBook G3 Clamshell: Needs some more ram, prehaps a new hard disk (6GB.....) A battery and a powercord (My last one blew up)..... Oh don't forget airport. then I can have it as a computer if people need a terminal

Why is that? Is the 15" too bulky? Just asking as I am thinking of getting a new 15 inch MBP at the next refresh...

I just want something a little smaller and more packable. I like the Air as well, so that may be the better choice, but it seems to be having a few QC issues... still on the fence.

The 15" is not a monster, but I like to keep things light for travel.
