Took a punt on a white '06 MacBook out of curiosity and never looked back! Succeeded by late '08 15" mbp (sold for £450 6 month ago), 2010 11" (too small, regretted it, sold), 2011 mba (soon to be sold) and now a 15" rmbp.
It's great having black bezels again, much prefer it to the alu one of the mba. I'm amazed how light it is considering it's size. Sure, it has 1.5lbs on the Air, but still, it's remarkable engineering and soooo much lighter than my old 15".
I'd actually have bought a 17" if they still made them as it never leaves the house. iPad Mini does all my portable duties.

Same. I expect to get 4+ years out of my current, for my usage. In hindsight, I should have just stuck it out with my late 08 mbp and skipped the ones in between. I've had desktops all the while for crunchy stuff. My old 15" was slooow when I sold it, but was in excellent condition and still more than adequate for light usage.
For what I use it for, my new 15"/512gb/16gb/750m, is pretty overpowered tbh, but I was always getting a 512gb ssd, and 16gb ram so it'll really last. Meaning £100 more for a faster cpu and dGPU, it'd be silly not too.
