Ok … shawty i understand, but how close in cm/inches are you holding the iPhone (naturally holding it) to your face, as I’m curious. 2/5/10cm? When you see the passcode screen, then FaceID had already failed at least once - see WWDC when Craig failed (2017)

It is definitely not 2 or 5 cm. It is above 10 cm bit also not always above 20 cm. It also depends on the angle I decide to unlock the phone. It works with some angles and it does not work with others. From what I have gathered I think that it is a mix between how easy is for me to hold the device far enough to register my face (it is not) and how easy it is for me to hold it far away to unlock it afterwards. I am also used to unlock my phone while resting it on the desk itself (something that works with Touch ID) and there Face ID fails too.

Thanks for the video. For me is a bit different than what I see happening with Craig. What happens for me is that I see the passcode screen but then my face seems to get recognized and I see the dots filling in and my phone unlocking. The only way I could explain this is that FaceId is slow enough for me for the phone to first think that my face is not recognized, it shows me the passcode to enter but then it realizes that it can recognize my face and as a result it acts like I have entered the valid passcode and thus shows this animation and unlocks the phone.
And I’ll agree that FaceID works a LOT faster or better on iPad Pro - I noticed that first day I got mine before I got the 12 mini.
Yep.
PS: I wear glasses to read and I keep my font to the second smallest on my iPhone - every single one I’ve used since the 3GS, and I do the same on my computers as well just seems easier on my eyes.

Try playing around with the field of views to see what results you get.
The Text Size on my phone is the third level but I have also activated Bold Text. I can see good enough and for now I do not want to increase the size. However I have not just myopia but astigmatism. With astigmatism you do not see correctly no matter the distance. And my astigmatism prescription is above the medium range for astigmatism so it can affect how I see things no matter the distance. With such description I am also a bit restricted at the angles I can use. Long story short astigmatism prescription is a lens put in a specific angle and as you wear glasses you do have to use them in a specific way to take advantage of that prescription. Like only straight watching through the lens, it cannot be below or above or sideways. If you need to do that you move your head, not your eyes. And this is where I do think that FaceId fails for me - it does not handle those angles properly but on the other side I do need to position my head this way.

Btw I also believe that it depends on the lighting. I was visiting my parents around Easter and FaceId failed far less there than now using it in my place. I doubt that I use it at different angles in the different places. I think that it is more about the surrounding lighting.

This is a 12 Mini thread and you are seriously discussing 2-3 pages TouchID? I didn't wanna write anything but now it gets a little annoying imo.

Sorry but, if someone doesn't like FaceID, don't buy the Mini. That's it. And this is ok, no one is pressured to buy anything, but complaining two pages and maybe 20 posts that the Mini doesn't have TouchID is ridiculous sorry. You can post your reason for not choosing the Mini or a thing you don't like but if you want to start a discussion FaceID vs TouchID, start a new thread. Again, posting experience ok, but complaining about missing TouchID for 20 posts or more ... it's the wrong thread for a discussion like this, start a new one.

I love both and both have it's advantages, although without mask FaceID is imo way more convenient, and a 13 Mini with TouchID would be perfect, but it is a fact that TouchID isn't there. It is not there. And that's it. You won't make it happen, writing many posts about how Apple failed and complain and do some wining about how no device is right for you. If TID is so important, which I can understand, buy a SE2. Sorry, but several pages around that topic is annoying imo.

The SE 2 is bigger than the mini. If I’d wanted a phone that big, I would’ve gotten a 6, 6S, 7, or 8 a long time ago. The point of the mini is that it’s small.

As I’ve mentioned, Face ID doesn’t work on a sofa, in bed, up close, any position where you're slightly outside its field of vision. Your CNET article says exactly what I’m saying, that Face ID works in far fewer situations than Touch ID. It has nothing to do with “detesting” a feature, it’s just the truth.
I understand Your love of the original SE size. But since there is no option for that, considering your dislike for FaceID, the SE 2 is really your best option. Both the SE 2 and the 12 Mini are way bigger than the original SE. The SE 2 is only 1/8" wider than the Mini and the same thickness. The difference in size from the 12 Mini to the SE 2 is less than the "burden" of having to use FaceID, for which you are so adamantly against.

The SE 2 has a worse screen, a worse camera, a worse battery, a worse processor, and worse water resistance all in a bigger package. Taller, wider, heavier. I got a mini because it’s mini, or at least as “mini” as Apple is likely to ever make in the future. Just because Face ID is a downgrade from Touch ID it doesn’t mean the rest isn’t an improvement.

I’m seriously contemplating returning my 12 Pro for a mini simply for the size difference. Coming from an X…the 12 pro is a fantastic phone but perhaps too large and heavy for my liking.

My one concern would be the “yellow tint” display issue that so many have brought up. I even notice it with my pro while I’m scrolling in the dark. Have you guys been experiencing those same display issues with the mini?
It depends. My mini is fine (even was with comparing to previous XS and with 12 I had for a test). But for a size matter, I have to agree. I really thought about going to 12, but everyday I liked mini more and more.

I have it all the time, only with tempered glass on the front. (Despite Apple Care+ when I had iPhone X, it had some scratches that could be bad for selling.)

Mine, now is naked when at home and with the leather wallet when outside. Probably the best in my opinion :)

I’ve been keeping my Mini in its (Apple) case - it is small enough that it is still easy to hold. My old 7 was al scuffed up from repeatedly taking it in and out of the case to charge on a docking station.

Finally joined club mini! Man I love this thing, haven't been this excited about an iPhone in ages. Had an 11 but hated how big it was... 11 Pro would have been fine for me size-wise, but had no need for a Pro and didn't want to pay 1k for a phone.

It's so good to have a nice, compact device that doesn't feel like a brick in my jeans. The iPhone 5 was always my favorite, and this is like an amazing evolution of it. I was so close to moving up to the standard 12 (since it still would have been smaller/lighter than my 11) but so glad I resisted that temptation. It is by far my zippiest iPhone yet, and the connectivity is great, probably due to that Qualcomm modem. I was able to load web pages today from my office where none of my prior iPhones were able to.

Was going to wait for the 13 mini but couldn't hold out any longer (my 11 always seemed weirdly unstable with bluetooth connections, and it was annoying me more and more). Maybe in a couple years I'll get a refurb 13 mini and ride the tiny phone wave as long as I can.

My wife has been considering replacing her 11 with a 12 Mini pretty much since it came out, purely because the 11 is too big. (She needed to buy it in a hurry when the 11 was the smallest iPhone on the then current chip).

+1

I couldn't wait to see if they will do a 13 mini and ended up getting one ... had it for 3 weeks now - really enjoying it !

probably because I've had an SE the last year but the battery is a noticeable difference

I'm gonna stay out of the faceid vs touch id debate :)

Thank you I totally agree. Love my mini.

I was considering the mini and probably would of gotten it if it had a telephoto lens. For me it’s more important than the ultra wide lens. I went for the 12 pro but I would of liked the 12 mini I like smaller phones

Not to beat FaceID topic to death here, but you don't have to use it. Launch day Mini FaceID worked like magic for me. However, not with a face mask. I spend very little time with a face mask on but entering PIN was annoying. Especially at the gym where I need to interact with my phone a half a dozen times. So I just turned everything off. No PIN, no FaceID, phone is always unlocked. I touch the screen and swipe up. Voila!

Security? Well, not concerned personally. I've never lost an iPhone, nor have I had one stolen. Nothing on it that would be an issue if a snoopy policeman had a look. But sure, security is a concern I suppose - although we all used to use cell phones without security.
